Resumen:
To avoid plagiarism, students have to learn the appropriate and effective ways of source text use, such as paraphrasing, summarizing, and citation. However, few studies have investigated how learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) employ copy and paraphrase as source text use strategies in completing writing tasks involving reading material, and how characteristics of the reading material, such as genre, affect such use. This article reports an empirical study that attempted to address the issue. Eighty students from an undergraduate program of a Chinese university wrote summaries for a narrative text and an expository text. Their drafts and the source texts are compared to identify instances of retention of strings of words from sources. Analysis of the summary scripts showed that participants heavily relied on the source...

Temas: literatura pragmática comunicación no verbal cultura

This study attempts to empirically examine the predictive power of learner anxiety and motivation and their causality in explaining proficiency in English as a foreign language (EFL) and other interrelated affective variables, including attitudes, self-confidence, and grit via a treatment-based causal model. To achieve this, the study carried out a 12-week experimental intervention employed by 8 EFL teachers with 282 EFL learners divided into four groups: in group 1, learners were exposed to anxiety-regulating strategies, those in group 2 were exposed to motivational strategies, those in group 3 were exposed to both anxiety-controlling and motivational strategies, and those in group 4 were not exposed to specific anxiety or motivation strategies. Data was gathered using questionnaires, classroom observations, and proficiency tests....

Temas: expresiones idiomáticas fraseología enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario cultura
Resumen:
En la enseñanza de E/LE, el estudio del léxico es un aspecto fundamental que con frecuencia, en los manuales y libros de texto, queda relegado a un segundo plano supeditado a argumentos gramaticales. Por esta razón, con nuestra actividad profundizamos en el léxico, en concreto en las expresiones idiomáticas relacionadas con el mundo taurino.

Resumen:
While student feedback literacy has garnered increasing attention in second language education, there is a paucity of research on the relationship between second language (L2) student writing feedback literacy and L2 student writing performance, especially in secondary school contexts. Based on two independent samples of 600 (54.3% female) and 727 (46.2% female) secondary students, the present study validated the L2-Student Writing Feedback Literacy Scale (L2-SWFLS) for secondary students in the Chinese context of English as a foreign language (EFL) and probed into the association between L2 secondary student writing feedback literacy and L2 writing performance. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were carried out to examine the factorial structure of the L2-SWFLS for secondary students. Structural...

Resumen:
This study explored how the iterative continuation task can be incorporated into a writing course in a setting for English as a foreign language (EFL). It investigated the effectiveness of the iterative continuation task in influencing senior high school students’ writing performance and their writing attitudes. Eighty-four year-one students from a China’s provincial senior high school participated in the study. They were divided into two groups: an experimental group and a control group, each consisting of 42 students. The experimental group was subjected to six turns of reading–writing continuation tasks, whereas the control group continued with the previous practice of a single turn of reading–writing continuation tasks. Data were collected from writing tests and questionnaires. The results show that the iterative continuation task...

This study investigated how repeated occurrences of novel words and the corresponding number of first-language in-text glosses influenced novel words processing and learning outcomes during second-language reading. Using eye-tracking, 48 college students in China read a 4,693-word graded reader. With 2 balanced versions, 24 words (12 glossed and 12 non-glossed) occurring 1 to 7 times served as target words. Results showed that, first, processing times of target words were shorter in the gloss condition, and combined processing times of target words plus glosses were shorter than the times of non-glossed target words; second, processing times of target words in two conditions showed different trajectories across repeated occurrences, whereas processing times of first-language glosses remained relatively constant; and third, first-...

Resumen:
This study investigates the effects of incorporating first language (L1) traditional stories into second language (L2) vocabulary review activities on vocabulary retention and learning engagement, with the use of ChatGPT as a tool to assist the teacher in generating review materials. A total of 79 freshmen majoring in Computer Science participated, with 41 in the experimental group and 38 in the control group. In both groups, ChatGPT was used by the teacher to generate multiple-choice questions for the vocabulary review activities, with the experimental group incorporating Chinese traditional stories into the questions, while the control group used questions generated without these stories. This approach helped reduce the teacher’s workload while maintaining their central role in guiding the learning process. Research instruments...

Resumen:
This study discusses the impact of interactionist output-oriented approaches, specifically, the effects of collaborative text reconstruction on subjunctive recognition and production in the written modality by English-dominant Spanish second-language learners. It also examines whether students’ text length and text complexity increase after treatment. A total of 104 fifth-semester Spanish learners participated in the study and were assigned to three conditions: control (n = 36), dictogloss (n = 33) and dictogloss plus explicit instruction (n = 35). In order to measure target form recognition and production as well as text quality, participants completed a pre-, post- and delayed-post-test that included a guided written task and a recognition task. Results indicated that participants in both treatment groups increased their production...

Resumen:
Con la pregunta del título de la experiencia, ¿los alumnos de E/LE se aburren con la poesía?, quiero reflexionar sobre qué motiva o no motiva realmente a nuestros alumnos cuando llevamos un texto a clase para trabajar con ellos. Veremos cómo para mí la actitud del profesor y las actividades que se generen a partir de ese texto serán fundamentales para conseguir el éxito y la atención de los alumnos.

Resumen:
This study investigates the effectiveness of multisensory learning (MSL) compared to traditional (TRD) teaching methods in enhancing English vocabulary acquisition among English as a foreign language (EFL) kindergarten-aged learners in Amman, Jordan. A total of 49 children were divided equally into two groups: one receiving traditional instruction and the other exposed to multisensory techniques, including visual aids, auditory input, specific activities, and experiences. Pre- and post-tests were used to assess vocabulary retrieval through two tasks. Descriptive statistics revealed that the MSL group outperformed the TRD group in both tasks, with higher mean scores and reduced variability, indicating more consistent learning outcomes. An independent sample t -test confirmed that these differences were statistically significant. The...
