This synthesis paper reviews the literature on the acquisition of second language (L2) grammar and vocabulary during study abroad, with a focus on Spanish as the target language. We begin by discussing research that has compared L2 development between traditional, classroom-based environments and study abroad contexts. This work suggests that domains of language learning (e.g., pronunciations, vocabulary, grammar) can be differentially affected by these two learning environments, with some domains showing stronger development in one context than the other. On this backdrop, we review the insights that studies of L2 Spanish offer on vocabulary and grammar development during short-term and longer-term sojourns abroad. This study explored a possible impact of extensive reading (ER) on vocabulary learning. Participants were 62 English majors who entered a private university in Japan in April 2019 and experienced ER for 13 months. They took the Productive Vocabulary Levels Test at the 2,000-word level 3 times: in April, December and May 2020. The outcomes of paired t-tests with Bonferroni correction revealed that participants achieved higher scores on the 2nd test, but their performance deteriorated on the final test. The model yielded by multiple regression analysis was comprised of the number of series participants read books from and the average percentage grade of MReader quizzes they passed, whose contribution to the post test scores was 14.1%. This study presents a teaching intervention to maximize the learning of a set of target words (TW) in learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) in a secondary school by means of intentional vocabulary learning activities and additional captioned television (TV) viewing. In the course of one academic year, two groups of grade 10 EFL learners (N = 64) were introduced to new TWs each week through language-focused exercises. The experimental group (n = 33) was additionally exposed to a captioned TV series where these TWs appeared. This study investigated the effectiveness of word-frequency and teacher judgments in determining students’ vocabulary knowledge and compared the predictive powers of both approaches when estimating vocabulary knowledge. Twenty-nine second language (L2) Spanish teachers were asked to predict how likely their students would know words from a 216-word Yes/No test that measures knowledge of the first 3,000 words in Spanish. The accuracy of their responses was compared with the results of 1,075 L2 Spanish students who completed the same test. Given the strong influence of vocabulary knowledge on L2 learners’ text comprehension (Schmitt et al., 2011), assessing the vocabulary demands of foreign language (L2) input is a crucial challenge for both L2 educators and researchers. To do so, a well-established step for the design, selection, and empirical analysis of L2 input is to use tools for lexical profiling.
