Resumen:
Despite the wide recognition of the importance of parental involvement in children’s English learning, research in this area has only gained momentum since the last two decades. This article systematically reviews studies on parental involvement in children’s English learning from 2000 to 2025. Through a rigorous paper selection process, 67 empirical studies were included for final synthesis. The analysis identified three major themes: (1) parental beliefs and attitudes, (2) parenting practices, and (3) challenges and strategies of parental involvement. The findings reveal the dynamic and complex relationships among these aspects of parental involvement, highlighting their differential impacts on children’s English learning, which is often influenced by various individual and contextual factors. Based on these findings, the review...

Resumen:
Research on second language (L2) writing tends to focus much more on student learning of writing than teachers’ teaching and learning of the teaching of writing. While a few studies have considered the influence of formal education on teachers’ L2 writing instruction, such as by examining the changes in teacher beliefs and practices across one semester (Lee, 2010), little is known about the long-term impact (e.g., 2 or 3 years) of such training on the professional development of L2 writing teachers. The present study adopted a multiple-case study approach to examine the long-term effects of a course on teaching L2 writing on five teachers of writing who taught writing in different contexts (primary school, secondary school, private language training center, and university) in the Chinese EFL context and how the teachers may apply the...

Resumen:
Despite growing calls to humanize materials for English language teaching (ELT), the emotional dimension of materials design remains largely overlooked, limiting their potential to foster affective engagement and support emotionally rich learning experiences that contribute to learners’ holistic development. This article proposes an emotional design framework for ELT materials, which draws on Norman’s Emotional Design Theory and empirical findings of emotional design in multimedia learning, and is informed by research in ELT materials, language education and applied linguistics. The framework outlines three levels of emotional design: visceral, behavioral, and reflective, to guide the development of ELT materials that stimulate the senses, promote meaningful and interactive language learning, and encourage personal reflection. To...

Resumen:
While previous studies have examined the impact of digital multimodal composing (DMC) as a new literacy activity on second language (L2) learners’ language development, L2 teachers’ engagement with DMC is under-conceptualized and underexplored. Based on a qualitative analysis of five teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL) who implemented in their curriculum a year-long DMC program within which students produced multimodal videos, this study presents three forms of teacher engagement with DMC. In the first form, the teachers used DMC as an instrument for traditional exercises of speaking and writing with incidental attention to the multimodal aspects of DMC, while in the second, the teachers manifested ambivalence about the means and the ends of using DMC. The teacher in the third form used DMC as integral to pedagogy with...

Resumen:
While student feedback literacy has garnered increasing attention in second language education, there is a paucity of research on the relationship between second language (L2) student writing feedback literacy and L2 student writing performance, especially in secondary school contexts. Based on two independent samples of 600 (54.3% female) and 727 (46.2% female) secondary students, the present study validated the L2-Student Writing Feedback Literacy Scale (L2-SWFLS) for secondary students in the Chinese context of English as a foreign language (EFL) and probed into the association between L2 secondary student writing feedback literacy and L2 writing performance. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were carried out to examine the factorial structure of the L2-SWFLS for secondary students. Structural...

Resumen:
While previous research has investigated the effectiveness of various second language (L2) writing instructional approaches upon students’ writing performance, whether and how the instructional approaches relate to students’ writing motivation and engagement remains largely unexplored. This study used the adapted Motivation and Engagement Scale for University/College students and investigated how the three L2 writing instructional approaches (i.e. product-, process-, and genre-oriented) were associated with L2 students’ writing motivation and engagement. A sample of 1,190 students from 35 universities in China participated in the study. Results show that the product-oriented approach induced both adaptive and maladaptive motivation and engagement whereas the process-oriented approach led to student engagement in writing with limited...

Resumen:
Research has consistently demonstrated that parental involvement plays a key role in children’s early second language (L2) development. However, little is known about how different aspects of parental involvement in children’s L2 learning are configured and how these differentiated combinations of parental involvement are associated with children’s L2 motivation and engagement. Moving beyond prior studies, which typically focused on the effects of single aspects of parental involvement, this study utilized a person-centered approach to examine the configuration patterns of various indicators of parental involvement in children’s L2 learning (i.e. parental autonomy support, psychological control, and behavioral control). Data were collected from a sample of 702 seventh graders ( Mage = 13.09, SD = 1.64; 50.14% girls) in two major...

Resumen:
While previous research has investigated teacher oral feedback practices and their influences on student learning, little research has examined how students interpret and engage with teacher feedback, which is critical to the feedback effectiveness and the success of learning and performance. According to Ellis, student engagement is clearly defined as the ways that students respond to the feedback, which can be cognitive, behavioral, and affective. Drawing upon students’ oral presentations together with teacher oral feedback, semi-structured interviews, stimulated recalls, reflective accounts, and PowerPoint (PPT) slides for the oral presentations, this case study investigates three undergraduates’ cognitive, behavioral, and affective engagement with teachers’ oral feedback provided on in-class oral presentations in an English as a...

Resumen:
Although the majority of studies have examined student teachers’ perceptions, emotional experiences, and responses during their teaching practicum (TP), there is a scarcity of research focusing on English as a foreign language (EFL) student teachers’ internal and behavioural responses to negative feedback from mentors or supervisors. Feedback literacy, as a comprehensive concept encompassing internal factors, offers an innovative perspective to explore the characteristics and interplay among learners’ cognitive, affective, and behavioural capacities when dealing with feedback. Therefore, from the perspective of feedback literacy, this study investigated how student teachers cope with negative feedback experiences during TP. This study involved 16 student teachers from five teacher education programmes at the four selected Chinese...

Resumen:
Collaborative writing is a pedagogical activity increasingly used in second language education. Despite the increased research on L2 students’ participation in collaborative writing, scant attention has been paid to student engagement in project-based collaborative writing and the possible engagement changes. This article reports on a longitudinal case study investigating the changes in student engagement of a group of five Chinese EFL undergraduates in project-based collaborative writing. The analysis of the data gathered by observations of group interactions, interviews, and student texts reveals three patterns of engagement changes: from active collaborators to ‘team escapers’, from a supporter to a ‘free rider’, and unchanged dedicated writers. The findings are discussed concerning the factors that could account for the engagement...
