Resumen:
The present study sought to understand the nature and level of foreign language (FL) anxiety among primary school students and the relationship between FL anxiety and FL achievement. Changes in FL anxiety across groups of three primary school years were also examined. A total of 631 (324 male, 307 female) primary school students aged 9–11 years completed the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) that measured students’ FL anxiety. Our participants’ FL achievements as measured by low-stakes regular assessments and high-stakes formal examinations were also collected. On average, primary school students reported levels of FL anxiety comparable to those of adults observed in previous studies. Factor analysis on FLCAS generated four components of FL anxiety: communication apprehension, fear of negative evaluation, test anxiety...

Resumen:
Digital multimodal composing (DMC) has attracted language instructors’ and researchers’ increasing attention during recent years. Previous studies mainly investigated the students’ DMC processes and perceptions, but DMC products are underexamined, and in particular, scarce is research comparing collaborative DMC products and individual DMC products. This article reports an empirical study conducted with 185 EFL college students in an English for specific purposes (ESP) course in Vietnam, in which they completed two infographic tasks using Visme, one collaboratively and the other individually. The DMC products were graded according to a rubric assessing the aspects of content/organization, multimedia/visual effects, and language use; the accuracy of the students’ infographics was also evaluated. The results of variance (MANOVA) test...

The current study investigated how problem-based English language learning influenced Korean secondary students’ self-directed learning readiness (SDLR). Based on the analysis of 78 students’ responses on the pre- and post-surveys, it was revealed that the students experienced significant increases in their SDLR in 18 out of 46 items, and many were related to learning strategy management, examination management, and time management. While male students showed an increase in five items, female students revealed an increase in 19 items, mostly related to learning strategy management, stress management, and assignment management. In the analysis of the relative significance of the change, the females revealed a more meaningful increase of their SDLR in seven items compared to the males. The items were focused on assignment management,...

Resumen:
This study leverages positive psychology (PP) to explore the reciprocal relationships among foreign language enjoyment (FLE), ideal L2 self, and grit in English major learners of English as a foreign language (EFL). It further examines the potential for growth mindset to predict these constructs over time. Employing a cross-lagged panel design, the research investigates these relationships among 903 EFL learners in Iran, assessed at two time points. Structural equation modeling (SEM) is utilized to analyse the hypothesized reciprocal and predictive effects. The findings reveal a significant lagged effect of ideal L2 self on both FLE and grit, suggesting that a stronger ideal L2 self at the initial assessment predicts higher levels of FLE and grit at the subsequent time point. Additionally, growth mindset exhibits a significant...

The scoring scheme used in vocabulary translation tests remains a debate topic among researchers. This study aims to examine the impact of various scoring schemes on the reliability and validity of the Chinese Vocabulary Proficiency Test (CVPT), as well as on the scores and rankings of test-takers. A total of 170 Indonesian Chinese as a second/foreign language (CS/FL) learners were recruited to complete the CVPT, which required the participants to translate 100 Chinese words into Indonesian or explain their meanings in Indonesian. The translation responses were classified into four levels based on the semantic distance between such answers and the intended word meanings. Subsequently, five distinct scoring schemes were devised, encompassing strict and lenient 2-point schemes, strict and lenient 3-point schemes, and a 4-point scheme....

Resumen:
This quantitative study examines whether and to what extent affective factors (i.e. motivation, self-confidence, risk-taking, L2 speaking anxiety, and grit) and virtual intercultural experiences are linked to willingness to communicate in a second language (L2 WTC) in in-class, out-of-class, and digital settings. Participants included 176 Korean undergraduate and graduate students of English as a foreign language (EFL). After adjusting for demographic factors, hierarchical regression analyses revealed three major results: first, those with higher levels of L2 motivation and grit as well as a lower level of L2 speaking anxiety had higher L2 WTC inside the classroom. Second, students who majored in English and had higher levels of L2 self-confidence and risk-taking had higher L2 WTC outside the classroom. Third, individuals who were...

This study examines how language teacher identity shapes technology integration through the lens of the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge-language teacher identity framework. A mixed-methods design was employed, involving survey data from 320 university foreign-language teachers and qualitative data from interviews, observations, and journals with 30 participants. Quantitative results showed that pedagogical beliefs and self-efficacy significantly predicted Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge levels. Qualitative findings revealed that identity conflicts, especially tensions between traditional roles and innovation demands, often constrained technology use, despite high confidence or competence. By foregrounding identity as a mediating mechanism, the study positions the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge-...

Resumen:
In the contemporary educational landscape, the interplay between customary and online classrooms has created a dynamic space for teacher–student interaction. This study examined spoken discourse by comparing the use of proximity and interaction strategies in customary and online English-as-a-foreign-language classrooms. Drawing on Hyland’s proximity model—comprising organization, argument structure, credibility, stance, and engagement—the study explored how these dimensions were realized in instructional interaction. Data were drawn from 30 recorded classes at Payame Noor University, including 15 customary classes and 15 online classes. Following transcription, the frequency of proximity and interaction features in each instructional mode was quantified. The findings suggested differences between the two modalities. Instructors in...

The present study examined the effect of a pedagogical intervention about humorous verbal irony in Spanish with a mixed group of 40 second language (L2) and heritage speakers of Spanish. Unlike previous studies that have considered only irony comprehension, this project incorporated both comprehension and production of irony into instruction and assessment. The intervention consisted of 2.5 hours of lessons that focused on humorous irony and irony cues. To assess effectiveness, participants completed a pretest and posttest of an irony comprehension instrument and a written production questionnaire designed to elicit humorous irony. The results from the study indicate that the intervention was beneficial in increasing participants’ accurate interpretation of irony and identification of tone of voice as an irony cue. Additionally, after...
