Resumen:
The emergence of ChatGPT has sparked growing interest in artificial intelligence within the educational field. However, expectations regarding its potential are tempered by uncertainty about its real implications, especially in the teaching of Spanish as a Foreign Language (SFL), where empirical research on the topic remains scarce. This study aims to identify the opinions of SFL teachers regarding the integration of ChatGPT as a teaching tool, the ways they use this chatbot, and the limitations they perceive for its integration. Through a questionnaire applied to 159 teachers, data were collected on various variables related to the use of ChatGPT. A total of 47% of participants reported using ChatGPT in their teaching practice. The most common applications include generating questions for lesson planning and searching for cultural...

Temas: artículo sostenibilidad
Resumen:
In both the school environment and teacher education, sustainable development is usually linked to the natural and social sciences and is rarely incorporated into language education or encouraged as part of language teacher education. As more research is needed on the practical implementation of sustainable development in language teaching and language teacher education, this study elucidates Finnish pre-service language teachers' perceptions of sustainability dimensions (i.e. ecological, economic, social, and cultural) and their role in language teaching. We used a questionnaire comprising open-ended and Likert-scale questions to examine pre-service language teachers' perceptions of and attitudes towards themes under all...

Temas: artículo política lingüística
Resumen:
This article examines the experiences of Spanish high school teachers in Tennessee, a state in the New Latino South where anti-immigrant sentiments and rejection of languages other than English are commonplace. Through a narrative inquiry approach, we explored how these contextual realities impacted teachers' perceptions of their roles and how they shaped their pedagogical goals. Participants' narratives reveal that, despite sharing similar realities at the macro level (the U.S. and the New Latino South), teachers' experiences were dependent on two factors at the meso level (their communities and schools). Teachers in urban areas and private schools worked in less challenging environments. Teachers in rural areas,...

Temas: artículo vocabulario
Resumen:
This study investigated the effectiveness of word-frequency and teacher judgments in determining students’ vocabulary knowledge and compared the predictive powers of both approaches when estimating vocabulary knowledge. Twenty-nine second language (L2) Spanish teachers were asked to predict how likely their students would know words from a 216-word Yes/No test that measures knowledge of the first 3,000 words in Spanish. The accuracy of their responses was compared with the results of 1,075 L2 Spanish students who completed the same test. To examine if the results could generalize to other L2 settings, 394 L2 English students completed a 70-word Yes/No test that measures knowledge of the first 14,000 words in English, and 15 L2 English language instructors attempted to predict which words would or would not be recognized. Results...

Resumen:
Almost since the onset of emergency remote teaching due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the spring of 2020, studies examined how teachers and students adjusted to the change, including in language courses. Some of this research has explored language teachers’ self-efficacy and confidence in teaching remotely, and to a lesser extent how student language learning has been affected; most studies have not differentiated among languages taught or between different student age groups. Through a survey of 173 PK–16 language instructors in the United States who switched from face-to-face classroom teaching to remote teaching in the spring of...

Temas: artículo creencias y actitudes de los profesores
Resumen:
Studies on teachers’ beliefs about vocabulary learning and teaching have focused, so far, on English as a second language (L2), or foreign language (FL), in different contexts but little attention has been given to other L2s and FLs. In this study, 15 Spanish L2 instructors at large universities were interviewed in order to better understand where they stand when it comes to (1) the importance they give to vocabulary, as compared to grammar, in their classes, (2) how they decide which words to teach, and (3) how they assess students’ word knowledge. These interviews were subsequently analysed following Grounded Theory. Most instructors...

Temas: artículo pronunciación
Resumen:
The goal of this work was to explore the training, classroom practices, and beliefs related to pronunciation of instructors of languages other than English. While several investigations of this type have been conducted in English as a second/foreign language contexts, very little is known about the beliefs and practices of teachers of languages other than English. It is unknown whether recent shifts to focusing on intelligibility, as advocated by some pronunciation scholars, are borne out in foreign language classrooms. To fill this gap, instructors of Spanish (n = 127), French (n = 89), and German (n = 80) teaching basic language courses (i.e. the first four semesters) at 28 large (e.g. more than 15,000 students), public universities in the United States completed an online survey reporting on their training, classroom practices, and...

Temas: artículo competencia intercultural
Resumen:
Some challenges to intercultural communication prevent intercultural interactions altogether, while others can prevent effective and successful communication during an intercultural exchange. This article addresses a key challenge within intercultural interactions: cultural meaning-making. This is a process that requires both communicative and intercultural competence and encompasses the interdependent and ever-present relationships between language, culture, and worldviews. Considering the important role of language teachers in second language (L2) learners? cultural meaning-making development in challenging interactions that may be faced by learners in the target language community, the current pilot study elicits teachers? perceptions of linguistic and cultural resources required by their students to engage in challenging...

Temas: artículo creencias y actitudes de los profesores
Resumen:
This article presents the results of an empirical investigation into the teaching practices and opinions of UK-based Spanish teachers concerning the treatment of language varieties in the L2/FL classroom. Qualitative and quantitative data obtained through an online survey provide the basis for an analysis of participants? knowledge of dialectal varieties and how to teach them, their perceptions of their own and other varieties, and the extent to which they accept new Pan-Hispanic ideologies and the conception of Spanish as a pluricentric language. The study reveals a lack of correlation between teachers? declared knowledge about Spanish dialectal varieties and their own teaching practices.
