This article explores the status of Spanish as a heritage language in Sweden, a Scandinavian society with diverse multilingual communities. We offer a systematic literature review, focusing on both empirical studies and educational policies related to multilingualism and Spanish heritage language speakers (SHSs). The selected studies cover such areas as identity and socio-affective factors in educational contexts as well as aspects of SHSs' linguistic systems. By synthesizing available research and policy frameworks, this work combines descriptive analysis with instructional implications to provide a critical overview of the educational and sociolinguistic dynamics shaping multilingual SHSs experiences in Sweden. This study investigates the profiles, challenges, and self-efficacy beliefs of teachers of Spanish as a heritage language in non-formal educational contexts in the UK, specifically in the ALCE programme and the NERU (Nuestra Escuela Reino Unido) supplementary school network. Based on survey data from 35 teachers, results reveal a general lack of formal training in heritage language pedagogy, particularly among NERU teachers, who also face greater structural challenges such as limited resources, unstable facilities, and lack of institutional support. Resumen:

The transmission of Spanish among heritage speakers is shaped by communicative practices within the family, by their distribution across different geographical areas and the opportunities to use the heritage language in those settings and, finally, by the availability of educational programmes that reinforce the acquired competence. This article analyses how these three factors interact to support the maintenance of Spanish as a heritage language in Germany, the third-largest European country in terms of its heritage Spanish-speaking population. The study draws on demolinguistic data to reconstruct various speaker profiles and the linguistic environments in which they live and are educated, as well as a sociolinguistic survey designed to identify communication practices within households.

This article examines the issue of teaching Spanish as a heritage language (SHL) focusing primarily on the issues of linguistic diversity and the socio-affective issues related to heritage language learners. First, we consider linguistic diversity in speech communities where students use SHL. Second, we discuss students? perceptions of the teaching of Spanish in a linguistically diverse setting and draw upon a corpus of interviews with 35 students attending an SHL program at a large southwestern university in the United States. Este estudio presenta los resultados de una metasíntesis cualitativa de las publicaciones de corte pedagógico en el campo de la enseñanza del español como lengua de herencia (ELH). El objetivo de la metasíntesis es proporcionar a educadores e investigadores una panorámica de la investigación pedagógica sobre el ELH en su estado actual e identificar sus puntos débiles con el objetivo de permitir y favorecer su progreso. A partir de un cotejo de investigaciones publicadas entre los años 2000 y 2017, en la metasíntesis se identifican las tendencias, los enfoques, las variables, los resultados y las limitaciones de los estudios pedagógicos del ELH. Asimismo, se destacan aquellas áreas que requieren una mayor atención por parte de los investigadores y se trazan posibles tendencias pedagógicas para el futuro.

This study explores the literacy development of students who speak Spanish as a heritage language and who participate in mandatory, peer-to-peer tutoring sessions outside of the classroom. We explore students? academic development as well as their self-positioning as heritage speakers in a bilingual academic setting. Drawing on Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), we analyze the written production of seven bilingual students enrolled in a Native Speaker Program at a large, public university.
