Foreign language anxiety and self-disclosure in online university French classes
Mark Tutton, Doron L. Cohen (2026)
Language Teaching Research 30-6
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos enseñanza en línea e híbrida expresión oral

Resumen:

This article presents a small-scale study of students with medium to high levels of foreign language anxiety (FLA) enrolled in synchronous, online French classes at an Australian university. We conducted in-depth, semistructured interviews with 10 such students, focusing specifically on their experience with speaking activities and their perceptions of questions requiring self-disclosure that are routinely asked in foreign language classes. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. The findings reveal that students overwhelmingly prefer the physical classroom to the online environment, and that this is largely due to increased possibilities for easier interaction with fellow students. In addition, these students were all at ease with disclosing low-level personal information in class. This suggests that the social nature of...

Implementing explicit pronunciation instruction: The case of a nonnative English-speaking teacher
Joshua Gordon (2023)
Language Teaching Research 27-3
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas pronunciación profesor nativo

Resumen:

Studies in second language teacher cognition (SLTC) of pronunciation teachers have increased in the last 10 years, due mainly to the fact that the decisions teachers make about explicit instruction are critical for the development of second language (L2) pronunciation in learners. Although recent research has indicated that nonnative-speaking teachers (NNSTs) can be as effective as native-speaking teachers (NSTs) in pronunciation instruction, and that their training needs resemble those of NSTs, the way NNSTs implement L2 pronunciation instruction has not been studied extensively. This is important to understand given the number of NNSTs of English worldwide at present, and because of the potential benefits of nonnative-speaking pronunciation teaching models in general. In this study, I analysed the way an experienced NNST implemented...

The effects of motivational dispositions on oral L2 task emotions and performance: A regulatory focus perspective
Chen Jiang, Mostafa Papi (2024)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación factores afectivos enfoque por tareas

Resumen:

Despite extensive research in task-based language learning, the role of learners’ motivational dispositions in their task experience and performance has remained underexplored. To help bridge that gap, this study investigated the relationships between second language (L2) learners’ chronic regulatory focus and their oral task emotions and performance. One hundred and thirty-three high school students studying English as a foreign language in China completed a regulatory focus questionnaire, an English proficiency self-rating questionnaire, an oral opinion task, and a post-task questionnaire measuring their task anxiety and enjoyment. Multiple regression results showed that the learners’ chronic promotion focus positively predicted their task enjoyment, which, in turn, predicted their oral task performance. In addition, the...

Digitizing the story-writing process for EFL primary learners: An exploratory study
Anisa Cheung (2024)
Language Teaching Research 28-4
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: expresión escrita storytelling/narración tecnología educativa

Resumen:

The benefits of using digital storytelling are well documented in the literature. Whether and how these advantages can be extended to digital story-writing, especially for young learners, remains underexplored. Recent advancement in technology has the potential of streamlining the stages of planning and revising in a process approach to second language writing. The present study examined how English teachers in two Hong Kong primary schools adopted a process approach to teach digital story-writing. They planned eight writing lessons for 10 Primary 3–4 classes. Students were taught to use Google Slides to write their stories on iPads and complete a recording in small groups, which were then published on an online platform. Findings from focus-group interviews, lesson observations and student writings revealed that students were highly...

Do beliefs matter? The relationship between beliefs about peer feedback and peer feedback outcomes on pronunciation
Ines A. Martin, Lieselotte Sippel (2025)
Language Teaching Research 29-4
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación pronunciación creencias y actitudes de los estudiantes

Resumen:

This study investigated the relationship between learner beliefs about peer feedback and development of second language (L2) pronunciation skills after peer feedback on pronunciation had been used in the classroom. Seventy-four first-year learners of German were assigned to a peer feedback provider group, a peer feedback receiver group, and a control group. After completing a questionnaire designed to elicit learner beliefs about peer feedback, the provider group and the receiver group received general pronunciation training. Following the training, the provider group gave feedback to peers on their pronunciation and the receiver group listened to this feedback. Participants’ learning gains were measured by means of native speaker comprehensibility ratings of their productions both before and after the intervention. Statistical...

Exploring the relationship between linguistic knowledge and strategy use in listening comprehension
Daniel Fung, Ernesto Macaro (2021)
Language Teaching Research 25-4
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: estrategias de aprendizaje comprensión oral diferencias individuales

Resumen:

The language learner strategies research field has often tried to identify the good language learner (GLL) by distinguishing more proficient from less proficient learners. However the notion of ‘good’ may be problematic without taking into account an individual’s linguistic knowledge (LK). This article foregrounds LK in relation to strategy use in the context of ‘listening to the teacher’: a language use task relatively under-researched. Secondary school students in Hong Kong (n = 646) completed a questionnaire and tests of LK including vocabulary and grammar. Lower LK learners reported using more translation strategies, whereas those with higher LK reported using a range of additional strategies. A further cluster analysis, however, indicated that a sub-group of lower LK learners were comparably strategic with the higher LK group...

Greater complexity and higher efficiency: Effects of translanguaging during collaborative pre-task planning on EFL learners’ speaking performance
Xinran Luo, Peijian Paul Sun (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: translingüismo enfoque por tareas expresión oral

Resumen:

Translanguaging has thrived as a pedagogy for second language (L2) acquisition because of its potential in maximizing L2 learners’ communicative repertoire. However, limited attention has been paid to how translanguaging can influence L2 speaking within the framework of task-based language teaching (TBLT). This study explored how different language use (i.e., L2 only and translanguaging) in collaborative pre-task planning contributed to L2 learners’ subsequent monologic speaking performance, as measured by complexity, accuracy, fluency (CAF), and idea units. The planning behaviours were also examined to offer explanations for the differences in learners’ speaking performance. Altogether 72 undergraduate students from a Chinese university voluntarily participated in this study. The results showed that translanguaging planning...

Incidental vocabulary learning from captioned viewing: A forest plot of word- and learner-related factors
Mark Feng Teng, Yachong Cui (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario materiales audiovisuales input

Resumen:

The present study aimed to bridge the gap in understanding the effects of captioned viewing on incidental vocabulary learning by using a forest plot to illustrate the influence of word-related factors and learner-related factors. Data were collected from 67 university students at a Chinese university. The results highlighted the significant effect of captioned viewing on incidental vocabulary learning and revealed the varied roles of both word- and learner-related factors in this process. Specifically, the study found that word frequency, word relevance, vocabulary breadth, phonological working memory, complex working memory, and English proficiency all play significant roles in vocabulary acquisition. These findings provide deeper insights into the relative value of captioned viewing for incidental vocabulary learning and identify...

One size does not fit all: Distinct patterns of growth mindset and motivation underlying feedback-seeking behaviors of adolescent L2 writers
Dawei Wei (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas feedback/retroalimentación expresión escrita

Resumen:

Feedback-seeking behaviors (FSB), namely, attending to written comments (feedback monitoring) and requesting clarification or additional feedback (feedback inquiry), are central to writer agency and writing outcomes. Existing studies have yet to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the motivational underpinnings of FSB, particularly for adolescents. Prior FSB research also treated second language (L2) writers as a homogeneous group, overlooking variations in motivational configuration across different stages of writing development. Addressing these gaps, this study draws on situated expectancy-value theory (SEVT) to examine how motivation mediates a writing growth mindset’s influence on FSB and whether the associations vary across writing proficiency levels in a Chinese secondary-school context. Participants were 303 adolescent L2...

Improving the Applicability of Cognitive Linguistics: A Research-Informed, Classroom-Oriented Perspective
Eloy Romero Muñoz, Remy Decorte (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: trabajo teórico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas lingüística cognitiva lingüística aplicada

Resumen:

This position paper explores the potential of Cognitive Linguistics (CL) in second and foreign language education from a research-informed, classroom-oriented perspective. Rather than evaluating CL through linguistic theory or experimental data alone, the paper draws on teachers’ and learners’ practical experiences with CL, as reported in available literature as much as experienced by the authors in their own classrooms, to reimagine what could help with the dissemination of CL. The discussion centers on the notion of “particularizability,” that is, how an innovation can be made usable for a specific teacher or learner cohort within a specific context and how adopting this perspective is likely to improve the dissemination of CL. The discussion begins by documenting the gradual shift in cognitive–pedagogical research toward a research...
