Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos práctica docente educación superior

Resumen:

Effective learning strategies have been proven to be advantageous to lower learners’ foreign language anxiety (FLA) and improve their language proficiency. However, many studies have devoted to students’ learning strategies but ignored the important role of teachers in reducing FLA. In addition, the effectiveness of the FLA-reducing strategies proposed by these studies has rarely been verified in natural classroom environment. The present study was conducted to explore the systematic effects of the teaching strategies on FLA after constructing a 34-item observation instrument Teaching Strategies Intervention Scale (TSIS), and investigated the changes of 306 English as a foreign language (EFL) graduate students’ English learning anxiety levels influenced by the anxiety-reducing teaching strategies in China. Results showed that the...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: uso de la L1 en el aula enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario comprensión oral

Resumen:

The present study examined the interaction effects between teachers’ choice of language in lexical explanation and second language (L2) learners’ proficiency level on the learning of phrasal verbs and listening comprehension in a meaning-focused listening activity. Undergraduate L2 learners with two different levels of proficiency (intermediate and advanced) were assigned to three different conditions. These conditions included (1) code-switching, in which teachers briefly switched to learners’ first language for vocabulary teaching purposes, (2) L2-only, in which teachers maintained L2 for overall instruction and vocabulary teaching, and (3) control condition, in which learners were not given instruction about target vocabulary. The results revealed that teachers’ instruction about target vocabulary brought about more gains in...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación factores afectivos storytelling/narración

Resumen:

A surge in empirical investigations in second language (L2) learning motivation in recent years has revealed a growing link between emotions in the foreign language classroom and language learner motivation. Nonetheless, there remains a distinct focus on the impact of negative emotions such as frustration and anxiety. The current year-long study investigates the links between positive emotions such as enjoyment, interest and excitement, and intrinsic motivation. The enquiry explores the influence of the Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS) strategy on students’ motivation and emotions using a Self-Determination Theory (SDT) lens. The study analyses the extent to which a group of French language students perceive that TPRS satisfies SDT’s three basic psychological needs of autonomy, competence and relatedness....

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación práctica docente aprendizaje autónomo

Resumen:

A central point that has attracted researchers’ attention for several decades is related to establishing the causal relationship between student motivation and second language (L2) achievement. Based on self-determination theory, we investigated the effects of motivational interventions applied by English language teachers on subsequent L2 achievement through the meditating effect of students’ basic psychological need for autonomy, intrinsic motivation, and motivational intensity. To obtain precise results, we applied structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine whether the impact of the intervention on L2 achievement was direct and/or indirect. The results of SEM indicated that the effect is both direct and indirect, and the model variables explained approximately 87% of the variance in students’ achievement. Moreover, the indirect...

In the last few decades, the assumption that the implementation of standardized tests might cause washback effects on language teaching and learning has become certainty. Researchers and practitioners report an increased use of ‘teaching to the test’ (TTT) practices, however, in current literature, consensus about which practices this includes is missing and operationalizations in studies vary greatly. Further, even though TTT is assumed to impair meaningful learning, no study so far examined students’ perspective. The current study therefore used a multi-method approach to theoretically and empirically define TTT and develop a uniform measurement instrument, focusing on students’ perspective of...

Enhancing English-as-a-Foreign-Language Speaking Performance through Self-Regulated Strategy Instruction: Evidence from Chinese University Learners
Yawen Wang, Peijian Paul Sun (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: estrategias de aprendizaje expresión oral aprendizaje autónomo

Resumen:

The present study investigated the effects of self-regulated strategy-based speaking instruction on English-as-a-foreign-language learners’ speaking performance and strategy use. Despite extensive research on self-regulated learning in various educational contexts, its application to second language speaking development remains underexplored. This explanatory mixed-methods quasi-experimental study employed self-report questionnaires, speaking assessments, and semi-structured interviews for data collection. A linear mixed-effects model results revealed that the experimental group (n = 54, receiving the self-regulated learning strategy-based intervention) demonstrated significantly greater improvement in speaking performance compared to the control group (n = 53, receiving traditional instruction), with effects sustained at delayed post...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: revisión bibliográfica

Temas: storytelling/narración tecnología educativa multimodalidad

Resumen:

Although digital storytelling (DST) has been a potent pedagogical approach in language learning, robust statistical evidence of its effect has yet to be determined. As such, in an attempt to assess the influence of DST on language learning and explore factors modulating its effectiveness, the current study conducted a thorough meta-analysis to address the research gap. The current meta-analysis consisted of 34 experimental studies published between 2006 and 2023 with 3,208 participants and 45 independent effect sizes. The results of the Bayesian meta-analysis showed a moderate-to-large effect size of 0.74 that confirmed the facilitative effect of DST in language learning. Furthermore, the results of moderator analyses revealed that multimodality, learning activities, intervention duration, and assessment format significantly modulate...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: adquisición de segundas lenguas enseñanza/aprendizaje de la gramática comprensión lectora

Resumen:

Texto completo

This study investigates whether a targeted grammar training session enhances English as a second language (ESL) learners’ sentence comprehension, focusing on garden-path sentences as a test of syntactic ambiguity resolution. Chinese ESL learners were assigned to a grammar training group or a control group before completing a self-paced sentence reading experiment. The training session followed a multiple-step progression from simple to complex sentence structures to raise the grammatical awareness in the learners for improving their syntactic parsing skills. Mixed-effects modeling of the data showed that ESL learners with grammar training outperformed those without training, as shown in both...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: adquisición de segundas lenguas motivación diferencias individuales

Resumen:

As a personality trait, ‘grit’ has been defined as a combination of perseverance and passion for long-term goals. Past research in social psychology has found grit as an important predictor of success across different populations in various academic and non-academic areas. Since successful mastery of a second language (L2) is highly dependent on learners’ sustained effort, the notion of grit and its relationship to language achievement gains immediate relevance in second language acquisition (SLA). The present study introduces the notion of grit and examines its relationship with motivational behaviors and language achievement in a sample of English as a foreign language learners (n = 191). Toward these ends, a language-specific grit scale was developed and validated to measure L2 learners’ grit. L2 grit was found to be positively...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: interacción atención a la forma feedback/retroalimentación

Resumen:

This classroom study investigated the effectiveness of form-focused instruction and peer feedback training to improve grammatical accuracy and thereby maximize learning opportunities during peer interaction. Eighty-seven third-semester learners of German were assigned to a PI group (peer interaction only), an FFI group (peer interaction and form-focused instruction), or a PFT group (peer interaction, form-focused instruction, and peer feedback training). During an instructional intervention over 3 class periods, participants in all 3 groups engaged in the same peer interaction activities, but only the FFI group and the PFT group received form-focused instruction on the grammatical target structure, the German present perfect tense. Critically, only the PFT group was trained to provide corrective feedback to peers. Results from a...
