Resumen:
Language learning behaviors, such as procrastination and engagement, are concrete actions closely linked to learning outcomes, but our understanding of them, especially procrastination, is limited. Boredom is a ubiquitous negative emotion among second language (L2) learners. In researching learning behaviors and boredom, previous L2 studies have rarely considered all the core motivational variables (cost, in particular), so a full account of motivational dynamics in L2 learning is still lacking. Additionally, current knowledge on how multiple motivational constructs function together at the individual level in shaping learning behaviors and boredom remains limited. The present study aims to address these gaps by using both variable-centered and person-centered approaches. Participants were 784 university students as L2 English...

Resumen:
Language negotiations facilitate second language acquisition (SLA) in both face-to-face (FTF) and computer-mediated interactions. Research shows that dyadic type can impact the quantity and quality of negotiations. Although both learner (L)-learner and native speaker (NS)-L dyadic type interactions have shown to be beneficial to SLA, it is still unclear which dyadic type is more effective for second language (L2) development in FTF and computer-mediated interactions. To fill this gap, this quantitative study compares FTF versus text-synchronous-computer-mediated communication (SCMC) task-based interactions by examining the following question: Is there a significant difference in the (1) frequency of negotiations and (2) effect of negotiations on subsequent L2 development in FTF interactions compared with text-SCMC in the following...

Resumen:
This commentary focuses on three methodological concerns regarding Bryfonski and McKay's (2019) meta-analysis of existing works on the effectiveness of task-based language teaching (TBLT). These are (1) loose inclusion criteria, (2) oversimplified outcome effect size calculation, and (3) neglect of influence of moderators. To rectify these issues, we conducted a new meta-analysis to build on the strengths of their work while correcting some flaws by aiming to afford more rigorous and valid insights for education practitioners, researchers, and decision makers. While Bryfonski and McKay (BM) reported a strong positive effect (d = 0.93), our results point to a more modest effect of TBLT on second language achievement (g = 0.61). Different from BM's claimed four moderators of the main effect (i.e. program region, institution type, needs...

Resumen:
Scholars and community members have long utilized participatory action research (PAR) to strategize local efforts to address real-world problems across various disciplines, including education. Applied linguistics and language education have also embraced and echoed the PAR tenets that situate the locus of knowledge production within local communities, aiming to co-construct ethical praxis for socially just change. However, there are few methodological syntheses of PAR studies in additional language education, despite ongoing calls to promote such a democratic research methodology to effect societal change. Aiming to bring greater methodological clarity regarding PAR in language education research, this article reviews methodological issues, synthesizing PAR in theory and PAR in practice. Drawing on a methodological review approach,...

Resumen:
Coteaching is widely adopted in K-12 second/foreign language education, yet its models are not fully understood. This systematic review examines 35 empirical studies from 1998 to 2024, exploring the effects, challenges, and potential of this pedagogical approach. Results indicate that K-12 classrooms mainly employed the two-teacher-one-language and the one-teacher-one-language approach, with the most commonly used models being the one-teach-one-assist and the team-teaching model. Regarding its influences, coteaching helped develop students' target language competence and multilingual repertoire, and it fostered cultural exposure and cross-cultural interactions. Coteaching also supported teachers in coconstructing knowledge and provided shared space for reflection. However, challenges such as language and cultural barriers,...

Resumen:
Research on task-based second-language (L2) writing has largely focused on investigating how task complexity (TC) affects various aspects of written production. However, this body of research has rarely examined the effect of task repetition, either on its own or in interaction with TC. Additionally, studies have predominantly used traditional frequency-based measures of lexical sophistication, without incorporating more nuanced, sense-aware indices that could offer a deeper understanding of linguistic complexity. This study aims to explore and compare the impact of TC, task repetition, and their interaction on lexical sophistication in L2 writing, using both traditional and sense-aware frequency-based indices. Ninety-six participants completed two argumentative essays on simple and complex tasks in counterbalanced order, twice over...

Resumen:
This systematic review examines existing empirical second language studies on the approaches to conceptualizing and measuring online second language learner engagement in technology-mediated second-language learning/teaching settings, identifying strengths and limitations of current measures and outlining potential improvements. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) procedure, we conducted a systematic review of empirical studies on online second language learner engagement. The review focused on several key areas, including the characteristics of second language research investigating online learner engagement, the ways in which the concept of online learner engagement is conceptualized, the indicators used to operationalize it, and the primary areas of focus and key findings emerging...

Resumen:
This study investigated the influence of practice distribution (i.e. spacing between practice sessions) on successful vocabulary learning by examining two different time distributions, i.e. 1-day spacing (1-DS) vs. 7-day spacing (7-DS) using a freely available computer-assisted language learning programme (Quizlet). The study achieved high ecological validity through a classroom-based study with low proficiency second language (L2) English language learners at an Omani college of technology. The sample consisted of 96 participants in control (n = 33), 1-DS (n = 34) and 7-DS (n = 29) groups. The control group was a test-only group with no explicit practice activities for the target words (34 nouns). Meanwhile, the 1-DS group (one day spacing between each practice session) and 7-DS group (seven day spacing between each practice session...

Resumen:
This study explored the wellbeing of four university-level teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL) in China before, during, and after the implementation of a new curriculum. A particular focus was given to their emotion and its impact on their wellbeing. The data was collected over the course of one academic year through three rounds of in-depth interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis. The analysis revealed various factors influencing teacher wellbeing that dynamically fluctuated throughout the reform implementation. Overall, three archetypes of language teacher wellbeing emerged: (1) ambiguous wellbeing, (2) jeopardized wellbeing, and (3) self-actualized wellbeing. Based on the findings, we propose an action-based framework for language teacher wellbeing which highlights its fluctuating nature as teachers...

Resumen:
With the advancements in technology and a growing number of mobile/computer-accessed platforms, opportunities for spoken foreign language (FL) exposure have increased considerably. While some learners seize these opportunities to engage in FL listening beyond the classroom (e.g., watching FL movies), others remain demotivated to do so. This mixed-methods study set out to examine 275 Grade-10-to-12 English-as-a-FL (EFL) learners' motivation and perceptions based on the amount of voluntary English listening they engaged with outside class. The findings from the e-questionnaire revealed that most participants had little-to-some such exposure. Through the lens of self-determination theory, we found that those having a lot of exposure showed the highest (FL listening) intrinsic motivation; however, it was the little-to-some group that...
