Resumen:
This cross-sectional study aimed to explore the nature and the patterns of lexical growth in content and language integrated learning (CLIL) and non-CLIL learners across three successive academic years. To pursue the purpose of the study a total of 110 female students of six classes in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades in both bilingual and monolingual schools in Tehran, Iran, were selected. The experimental group included 50 students, while the control group included 60 students. Receptive and productive vocabulary sizes of three grades from both environments were compared using the Vocabulary Levels Test (VLT) and the Productive Vocabulary Levels Test (PVLT). The results indicated that learners’ receptive and productive vocabulary sizes in both CLIL and non-CLIL groups are below 1,000 words, according to the results of the 2k VLT and 2k PVLT...

Resumen:
Google Translate (GT) has become a popular machine translation (MT) tool among language learners, received by instructors with excitement over its pedagogical potential and concerns about its possible misuse in the classroom, particularly when this misuse goes undetected. This study investigated the suitability of natural language processing (NLP) software for the automated detection of MT use in second language (L2) writing, examining a dataset composed of written samples generated by GT and direct L2 writing produced by intermediate-level postsecondary learners of Spanish. NLP-powered analyses found significant lexical and sentential-level differences, as well as estimated proficiency-level differences across text types. Automated judgments based on lexical diversity and amount of coordination yielded detection accuracy rates of 73....

Resumen:
This article delves into the concept of ‘puzzles’ in exploratory practice (EP), an innovative branch of inclusive practitioner research. EP encourages teachers and learners to define their own agendas (i.e. puzzles) to explore their practice. It has been argued that puzzles are most effective when framed as why questions (e.g. Why do we cheat? ) rather than other types of questions. This is because why questions are believed to assist practitioners in gaining a deeper understanding of their practice. However, I have observed that learners often generate other forms of questions, such as what or how . Additionally, exploring a why question did not always lead to a deeper understanding. To address...

Resumen:
Despite the recognized importance of supervisors’ feedback in enhancing students’ academic development, research on novice supervisors’ perspectives, especially concerning undergraduate thesis supervision in English as a foreign language (EFL) contexts, remains scarce. In an attempt to address this gap, this qualitative case study explored the written feedback beliefs and practices of two novice supervisors in the department of English of two universities in mainland China. It examined how their beliefs were shaped and translated into practice during their supervision of EFL undergraduate students. Data were collected longitudinally over an 8-month period, including semi-structured interviews, written feedback samples, and voice messages, to capture the full thesis supervision process. Findings revealed that supervisors held varying...

Resumen:
This study examines the evolution and regulation of group-level enjoyment of online collaborative language learning. Three Chinese undergraduate learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) collaborated to finish a series of English writing tasks via an online group enabled by WeChat, a popular social instant messaging app in Chinese-speaking communities. The data were collected in three sessions over a single semester using an idiodynamic approach for participants’ ratings of enjoyment intensity and stimulated recall interviews for participants’ descriptions of emotion regulation types. The data were analysed using deductive qualitative thematic analysis and quantitative descriptive analysis...

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas inteligencia artificial pragmática
Resumen:
Effective academic communication in multilingual higher education requires pragmatic competence, yet this dimension of language ability is often overlooked in instruction and insufficiently supported through feedback or authentic practice. Grounded in instructed pragmatics and technology-mediated learning frameworks, this study reports on the design, implementation, and empirical evaluation of an artificial intelligence (AI)-mediated multimodal platform developed to scaffold pragmatic competence in Indonesian within digital academic contexts. The platform integrates five interdependent features: automated text analysis to identify speech acts, politeness strategies, and violations of conversational principles; video analysis with multilingual transcription and theory-based annotation; conversation simulations providing context-...

Resumen:
This study investigates the effects of input-based and output-based instructions on the acquisition of second language (L2) request modifiers. Four intact classes were randomly assigned to textual enhancement (TE), input flooding (IF), output-based instruction (OI), and control (CO) groups. The TE group watched some captioned videos on requests and read over the video transcripts with the target features typographically highlighted. The IF group watched twice more captioned videos and read over the video transcripts with no textual manipulation. The OI group watched videos with no captions and then engaged in dialogue reconstruction tasks. Results of the pragmatic comprehension and production pre-test and post-test revealed the overall effectiveness of the treatment. TE and OI groups performed rather similarly in the comprehension...

Resumen:
Second language acquisition is a complex process that involves numerous challenges and is influenced by various factors, including linguistic competence and classroom settings. This study examines the concerns and emotions experienced by 43 adult international students learning Maltese as a second language. By employing a mixed-methods approach, the research collected both qualitative and quantitative data through questionnaires and interviews. The results reveal a spectrum of positive and negative emotions experienced by students during a Maltese language learning session that incorporated digital resources. The evidence presented in this research shows that students have both personal and...

Resumen:
Writing has long been seen as a challenging skill that language learners need to learn. In addition, by guaranteeing participant engagement in significant communication processes, visual methods such as photovoice can be utilized in language instruction to enhance language learning. Thus, the present study attempted to examine the effects of utilizing Photovoice as an innovative instructional method on Iranian intermediate English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ writing skills. The study also examined the participants’ attitudes toward the implementation of photovoice in language learning. The research followed a mixed-methods design to collect and process the data. Sixty female intermediate learners from a private English language institute in Isfahan, Iran, were selected through convenience sampling and then randomly assigned...

Resumen:
Recent research on the effects of processing instruction (PI) have incorporated online research methods in order to demonstrate that PI has effects on cognitive processing behaviors as well as on accuracy (e.g. Lee & Doherty, 2019a). The present study uses self-paced reading and a moving windows technique to examine the effects of PI on second language (L2) learners’ processing of Spanish active and passive sentences to explore the effects of PI on instructed second language acquisition. One group received PI but the Control group did not. Between group comparisons on passive sentences showed changes in performance for the PI group but not the Control group with the PI group gaining in accuracy and processing speed, specifically faster response times to select the correct picture and faster reading time on passive verb forms....
