L1 mediation in Chinese English learners’ mental lexicon: Evidence from word association tests
Li Xiang, Hyunjeong Nam (2025)
Language Teaching Research 29-2
Detalles Cerrar ✕

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: influencia de la L1 competencia léxica vocabulario

Resumen:

The study aimed to explore the evidence of first language (L1) mediation in second language (L2) word associations and the L2 learner-related factors affecting the extent of L1 mediation with the following approaches. First, different from previous research, word association tests (WATs) embraced both receptive and productive word associations in the study. Second, different from word-related variables such as cognates vs. non-cognates in previous research, the study examined learner-related factors. Third, it examined whether the methodological difference (receptive vs. productive test formats) may affect the extent of L1 mediation in L2 access. A total of 108 Chinese English learners varying in proficiency, learning experiences, input and motivation participated in WATs using 24 stimulus words. The results suggested, (1) from the...

The influence of Exploratory Practice (EP): How a group of former Brazilian ELT teacher-learners perceive the value of EP years after graduation

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: formación de profesores reflexión docente práctica docente

Resumen:

Exploratory practice (EP) is a form of practitioner research that has made inroads in second language learning and teaching since the special issue of Language Teaching Research (2003) in which Allwright et al. proposed its reconceptualization in language teaching. Two decades later, this article reports on the influence that EP has accomplished by having its principled framework integrated in the pre-service language teacher education (LTE) programmes of two Brazilian Universities. A British Council funded project (2018–19) enabled a group of Brazilian teacher educators to carry out a qualitative investigation to identify how 44 of their former teacher-learners who undertook these programmes between 2008 and 2018 perceive the value of EP in their professional lives. The thematic analysis of the discourse generated through face-to-...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación comprensión lectora expresión oral

Resumen:

This study examines a potential tension in the application of self-determination theory to an extensive reading-enhanced speaking course in an English-as-a-foreign-language context. Although extensive reading is widely assumed to foster autonomous motivation by satisfying learners’ basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, its implementation within formal instructional settings often involves mandatory reading quotas and graded components that may introduce controlling pressures. Drawing on data from 142 Japanese university English majors enrolled in a year-long extensive reading-integrated speaking course, this study investigated changes in motivational regulation and basic psychological needs satisfaction using Bayesian analyses. Results revealed strong evidence for increases in all three basic...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación expresión escrita tecnología educativa

Resumen:

Student engagement with written feedback (WF) in English as a second language (ESL) / English as a foreign language (EFL) learning has been widely researched from cognitive, affective, and behavioural dimensions. Students’ textual change is taken as the only indication of their behavioural engagement with feedback. Students’ no-revision operation or their unaction is usually considered as their disengagement or lack of engagement, or excluded from the examination of students’ WF engagement. How students have possibly engaged themselves with WF before they consequently disuptake (used in the context of feedback engagement, as an opposite to “uptake”) it is hardly touched upon in most studies. To visibilize students’ invisible engagement, we contextualized the study in a natural EFL writing class involving students’ writing and...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: translingüismo expresión escrita multilingüismo

Resumen:

This study investigates the variations in multilingual students’ translingual practices across language proficiency levels in the context of Chinese as a second language (CSL) writing. The case study examined multilingual students’ CSL writing across different proficiency levels at a Sino-US joint-venture university in China, with the aim to understand the variations in translingual practices across these levels. The findings revealed that as language proficiency advanced, there was a corresponding increase in the sophistication of translingual practices, which was manifested in a rise in nuanced, strategic, and culturally inclusive writing. The gradual development in language proficiency allowed students to navigate beyond lexical boundaries and embrace linguistic and cultural diversity, which indicated a change from a monolingual...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario materiales audiovisuales factores afectivos

Resumen:

The current study examined the impact of teacher’s facial expressions in instructional videos on students’ learning process and outcomes for English vocabulary with positive and negative valence. Participants, Chinese learners studying English as a foreign language (EFL) in China, learned 32 words from an instructional video in which a teacher displayed either positive or negative facial expressions. Our findings suggest that learners dwelled longer and fixated more on slides presenting negative vocabulary than on those with positive one. Additionally, learners dwelled longer and fixated more on the teacher when they displayed positive facial expressions compared to negative ones. It was also observed that students’ motivation to learn increased when the teacher displayed positive emotions, irrespective of the emotional valence of...

Learner and teacher beliefs about motivational strategies in Chinese EFL classrooms: A social cognitive theory perspective
Xuejun Ye, Guangwei Hu (2026)

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación creencias y actitudes de los estudiantes creencias y actitudes de los profesores

Resumen:

Motivation is essential for second-language (L2) learning, and teachers are primary influencers of learner motivation through their use of motivational strategies (MSs). Research indicates that learners’ perceptions of the effectiveness of MSs are linked to their motivation. However, significant misalignments may exist between learner and teacher beliefs about the importance of these strategies, often due to teachers’ insufficient understanding of learner expectations. Such misalignments can potentially undermine the effectiveness of motivational teaching. To better understand and address these issues, this survey-based study compared how Chinese junior secondary students (n = 1,489) and teachers (n = 210) perceived the importance of 10 traditional and seven vision-based macro-L2 MSs. Results revealed that both students and teachers...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas creencias y actitudes de los estudiantes motivación

Resumen:

This study aimed to examine the relationships between English as a foreign language (EFL) students’ language mindsets (i.e. entity and incremental beliefs about general language intelligence, second language aptitude, and age sensitivity in language learning) and graded performance by considering the mediating roles of their perceived instrumentality as well as four aspects of engagement (i.e. agentic engagement, behavioral engagement, emotional engagement, and cognitive engagement) within English classes. A total of 526 EFL students voluntarily participated in the present study. A latent factor correlation analysis, a series of multiple regression analyses, and a structural equation modeling analysis were conducted to analyse the data. The results showed that EFL students’ language mindsets, four aspects of engagement, perceived...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enfoque por tareas interacción expresión oral

Resumen:

This study examined the impact of learner proficiency on the occurrence and resolution of language-related episodes (LREs) in rehearsal of interactive speaking tasks and on the subsequent use of language items from LREs during performance of the same tasks in front of the class. Forty-eight learners from six intact English as a foreign language (EFL) classes at a Vietnamese high school were divided into three proficiency groups, each consisting of eight dyads. Group 1 was higher proficiency (HH) dyads; Group 2 consisted of mixed proficiency dyads (HL) and Group 3 was lower proficiency (LL) dyads. All the pairs rehearsed and then consecutively performed a problem-solving task and a debate task in two separate classroom lessons. The total data included 48 rehearsals and 48 corresponding performances collected during normal classroom...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: comprensión lectora enseñanza a niños educación primaria y secundaria

Resumen:

The present study presents an instructional procedure developed in an attempt to enhance incidental learning through graded readers in class, the Multiple Incidental Exposures (MIE) procedure, and compares it to a more common procedure involving reading and doing the exercises, which is referred to as Traditional Explicit Practice (TEP). Participants were 44 Catalan/Spanish students (aged 10–11 years) taking the fifth course of primary education in a school in Catalonia. Participants belonged to two intact classes that were randomly assigned a condition: MIE group (n = 23, n = 15 males, n = 8 females) and the TEP group (n = 21, n = 12 males, n = 9 females). The MIE group was first told the story by their teacher, then read and listened to the graded readers twice (first collectively and later on individually), to be followed by a True...
