Although studied for decades by the research community, artificial intelligence (AI) in education has recently sparked much public debate with the wide-spread popularity of systems such as ChatGPT and DALL-E. Existing literature offers a wealth of research on design, deploying and evaluating AI-driven systems in education. However, the challenges related to the growing influence of AI in the society, calls for revisiting research foundations of AI in education in order to inform decision-making in policy and guide future research. This special issue of Computers & Education: Artificial Intelligence brings 11 papers that explore the theme of empowering learners for the age of AI...

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is prevalent in nearly every aspect of our lives. However, recent studies have found a significant amount of confusion and misunderstanding surrounding AI. To develop effective educational programs in the field of AI, it is vital to examine and understand learners' pre- and misconceptions as well as myths about AI. This study examined a corpus of 591 studies. 25 relevant studies were identified by applying the following eligibility criteria: English-written original empirical research on education and AI and reporting AI conceptions in a formal learning context. The review found studies from six continents, with the majority conducted in Europe and North...

AI-based systems, and especially voice-based AI systems, are gaining popularity and set novel requirements for end users. Research has provided first approaches postulating and conceptualizing AI-related user competencies. However, voice-based technology utilizing spoken language for operation has been neglected so far. This study presents qualitative interviews of 12 experts in research, development, or design of voice-based AI and explores the skills and competencies which are needed to interact with VBAI in a self-determined and mindful manner. Analyses highlight that, contrary to existing assumptions and providers’ advertising promises, not only language skills but a wider...

With machine learning becoming more and more prevalent in society, it also becomes a topic that is relevant for general K12 education. At the same time, modern machine learning is relying heavily on mathematics, requiring novel approaches to teaching it in settings where a full coverage is not possible. In this context the study presented here investigates the conceptions that students have about the workings of a particular type of machine learning system before and after a short workshop. Students (N = 57) gave open ended answers that were analyzed qualitatively, following the approach of phenomenography. The resulting model was then validated with semi-structured interviews with...

Nowadays, Artificial Intelligence (AI) literacy has become an emerging topic in digital literacy education research. However, it is still under-explored in early childhood education (ECE) since the AI curriculum for young children has just been designed in recent years. A scoping review was conducted to examine the thematic and content analysis of 16 empirical papers from 2016 to 2022. This scoping reviews evaluate, synthesize, and display 16 studies on AI literacy in early childhood education, including curriculum design, AI tools, pedagogical approaches, research designs, assessment methods, and findings. The discussion of the AI literacy implementation in ECE contributes to...

There is an emerging interest in Artificial Intelligence (AI) teaching and learning in the K-12 setting. While some work has explored the educational content and resources used for this purpose, there is limited empirical evidence on the effectiveness of such AI education interventions. The primary objective of the systematic literature review presented in this paper was to examine research with empirical evidence reporting learning outcomes for teaching and learning AI in K-12 between 2019 and 2022. Through a rigorous selection process, a total of 28 studies were included in the final analysis out of 8,175 papers identified from five research databases using specific search terms....

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Resumen:

Artificial intelligence literacy is a concept that has been the focus of exhaustive research recently. However, there are very few psychometrically sound and thoroughly evaluated instruments that attempt to assess AI literacy in a valid way. Therefore, this study presents an item set to assess the AI literacy of non-experts. In the context of a Delphi expert study, 53 subject matter experts participated in three iterative questionnaire rounds to generate potential AI literacy items and assess their content validity. In addition, the experts made suggestions on how the items’ wording accuracy could be improved and evaluated the wording suggestions of the other experts. Of 47...

Although the importance of K–12 artificial intelligence (AI) education grows, the lack of teacher readiness hinders the integration of AI in schools. To address this issue, this study aimed to explore South Korean elementary school teachers' experiences teaching AI curricula and examine their competencies. A survey and interviews were conducted with 67 elementary school teachers who have been working in AI-leading schools in South Korea. The results indicated that teachers were least confident in content knowledge, followed by technological knowledge and pedagogical knowledge relevant to AI. Additionally, interviews with 13 teachers revealed five themes regarding AI education: (1)...
