Implementing tasks in young learners’ language classrooms: A collaborative teacher education initiative through task evaluation
Yan Zhu (2022)
Language Teaching Research 26-3
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas enfoque por tareas enseñanza a niños

Resumen:

Despite empirical evidence in support of the effectiveness of using tasks in young learners’ classrooms, task implementation has been repeatedly reported as a thorny problem. An essential but under-researched issue is how in-service teacher education programme can be conducted to facilitate teachers’ implementing tasks in their classrooms. This practitioner research article reports on a researcher and teacher educator’s action research study in which she worked with Lucille (pseudonym), a novice English language teacher, to design and implement two repeated task-based language teaching (TBLT) lessons for Grade 2 students at a Chinese primary school. During a six-week teacher education program consisting of two cycles of TBLT lesson planning, implementation, evaluation, and reflection, the teacher educator provided continuous support...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas feedback/retroalimentación expresión escrita

Resumen:

Feedback-seeking behaviors (FSB), namely, attending to written comments (feedback monitoring) and requesting clarification or additional feedback (feedback inquiry), are central to writer agency and writing outcomes. Existing studies have yet to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the motivational underpinnings of FSB, particularly for adolescents. Prior FSB research also treated second language (L2) writers as a homogeneous group, overlooking variations in motivational configuration across different stages of writing development. Addressing these gaps, this study draws on situated expectancy-value theory (SEVT) to examine how motivation mediates a writing growth mindset’s influence on FSB and whether the associations vary across writing proficiency levels in a Chinese secondary-school context. Participants were 303 adolescent L2...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: colocaciones enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario input

Resumen:

Collocational knowledge is central to communicative competence, but many second language (L2) learners struggle to acquire this aspect. To address this limitation, the present study investigated if textual enhancement and frequency manipulation would affect incidental learning of collocations from reading. Fifty-four first language (L1) Cantonese speakers read two English stories in which 12 adjective–pseudonoun collocations appeared either three or six times. The target collocations were coloured in red under the enhanced condition. Participants’ attentional processes were examined using their eye-movements during reading and stimulated recall comments prompted by their own eye-movements. After reading, unannounced immediate and delayed posttests were administered. The results showed that increased frequency led to greater visual...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: diferencias individuales aprendizaje colaborativo motivación

Resumen:

Ambiguity tolerance reflects learners’ abilities to accept unpredictable and unfamiliar contexts in language learning without frustration and discomfort. However, it has yet to be thoroughly explored when associated with engagement, motivation, and peer collaboration collaborative learning in course of English as a foreign language (EFL) learning. Relying on questionnaire survey data, this study adopts structural equation modeling techniques based on 1,200 Chinese high school students’ responses. The findings ascertain that engagement and volition significantly and positively predict ambiguity tolerance and learning effectiveness. Additionally, ambiguity tolerance predicts learning effectiveness. For peer collaborative learning, ambiguity tolerance and learning effectiveness are also critical predictors. They significantly and...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas motivación estrategias de aprendizaje

Resumen:

This study examined the role of growth mindset, self-efficacy, and intrinsic value in self-regulated learning (SRL) and English language learning achievements in Hong Kong primary school students. A sample of 690 4th graders participated in the study. The findings suggest that the level of SRL strategy use (i.e. monitoring, effort regulation, and goal setting and planning) was driven by the students’ motivational beliefs (i.e. growth mindset, self-efficacy, and intrinsic value) in different ways. Monitoring and effort regulation, in turn, were significant contributors to the participants’ English language learning achievements, but goal setting and planning did not predict their English language learning achievements. The finding suggests that growth mindset was a stronger predictor of SRL than self-efficacy and intrinsic value....

Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enfoque por tareas expresión escrita motivación

Resumen:

This study explores the interplay between task repetition and task motivation in second language (L2) writing, specifically focusing on syntactic complexity, accuracy, and lexical complexity (CAL). Aligning with Dörnyei’s call to balance cognitive and affective factors in task-based language teaching (TBLT), the research involved 100 advanced mid-level learners of English as a second language (ESL) aged between 18 and 20 years. Participants completed both simple and complex argumentative writing tasks in a counterbalanced order, with a one-week interval between tasks. A perception questionnaire was administered immediately after each task performance to validate cognitive task complexity manipulations. Subsequently, participants repeated the same tasks with the same time interval, complemented by the completion of a task motivation...

The role of proficiency and pair formation method in language-related episodes: A study of young CLIL learners’ interaction
Francisco Gallardo-del-Puerto, María Basterrechea (2024)
Language Teaching Research 28-3
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: AICLE/CLIL interacción atención a la forma

Resumen:

Little is known about young CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) learners’ attention to formal aspects of the target language when engaged in collaborative task-based interaction. Previous research on language-related episodes (LREs) with other populations indicates that certain variables (e.g. target language proficiency or pair formation method) may play a role in the production of LREs. This study investigates the amount, types and resolution of LREs produced by primary education CLIL learners in a collaborative picture-ordering + story-telling task depending on two variables – L2 English proficiency (grade 5 dyads vs. grade 6 dyads) and pairing method (proficiency-matched dyads vs. student self-selected dyads). Findings indicate that young CLIL learners’ interactive behaviour in L2 English, at least in terms of LRE...

Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación expresión escrita inteligencia artificial

Resumen:

This 8-week randomized controlled experiment tested the different effects of adaptive artificial intelligence-based feedback versus static rule-based feedback on learner engagement and the acquisition of second language writing in 216 undergraduate students of English as a foreign language. The respondents were randomly divided into a control group that used standard automated feedback and an artificial intelligence-adaptive feedback group in which the responses were customized according to individual proficiency levels and error patterns. Validated analytical rubrics (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.89) were used to evaluate the writing quality, and the involvement was assessed through self-reports and system logs weekly. The multilevel analysis of the growth curve revealed that there were high treatment effects, in that the...

Implementation of translingual pedagogies in EAL writing: A systematic review
Yachao Sun (2025)
Language Teaching Research 29-3
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: revisión bibliográfica

Temas: translingüismo expresión escrita multilingüismo

Resumen:

Translingual pedagogies have been proposed and implemented to respond to the increasing linguistic and cultural diversity in today’s classrooms. However, the findings of translingual pedagogies on English as an additional language (EAL) writing vary from facilitating to undermining teaching and learning. To understand the empirical landscape of this young and fast-growing research area, I systematically reviewed 62 studies with a research synthesis method to explore what translingual activities have been implemented and how they have impacted EAL writing teaching and learning (including both K-12 and post-secondary contexts). The findings reveal that various translingual activities, such as self-reflective writing and literacy narrative, have been enacted in EAL writing teaching and learning. These activities have been practiced in...

Exploring teacher mediation and learner responsiveness in small-group online dynamic assessment for L2 academic writing development
In Ji (Sera) Chun (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: evaluación teoría sociocultural escritura académica

Resumen:

Research on group dynamic assessment has predominantly focused on whole-class mediation, with limited attention given to alternative formats such as in smaller groups. Grounded in sociocultural theory, the present study explored how a small-group online dynamic assessment using video conferencing (i.e., Zoom) and Google Docs enhanced the English academic writing abilities of university-level second language (L2) learners. Twelve students in an intermediate academic writing course were divided into four groups, each consisting of three to four students. An adjusted cumulative group dynamic assessment approach was implemented over three week cycles. The analysis examined both quantitative and qualitative changes in teacher mediation and student responsiveness, as observed in relevant episodes both within and across sessions. For the...
