Effects of narrow listening on ESL learners’ pronunciation and fluency: An ‘MP3 flood’ programme turning mundane homework into an engaging hobby
Art Tsang (2022)
Language Teaching Research 26-3
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas comprensión oral pronunciación

Resumen:

While most empirical studies have investigated the improvement of learners’ L2 spoken proficiency via speaking-related interventions, the present study examined the same topic through a different modality: listening. Ninety-five first-year tertiary-level students of English as a second language (ESL) in Hong Kong participated in this three-month experiment. They were separated randomly into three groups: (A) narrow listening with latitude for learners to choose their own materials; (B) narrow listening without such latitude; and (C) a control group without narrow listening. All participants attended a compulsory course on English phonology. Narrow listening was set as homework for the two experimental groups A and B. The overall results indicated that groups A and B improved significantly more than group C in pronunciation and fluency...

Negotiation in group interaction: Longitudinal evidence from Chinese postgraduate EFL learners
Jinfen Xu, Jing Shu (2024)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: interacción aprendizaje colaborativo estrategias de comunicación

Resumen:

Negotiation serves to solve communication problems in second language (L2) learners’ peer interaction including negotiation of meaning (NoM), negotiation of form (NoF), negotiation of content (NoC) and negotiation of procedure (NoP). The four negotiation types are initiated through negotiation strategies. This study examined how negotiation types and negotiation strategies were distributed and how the distributions developed. The data came from five rounds of group interaction conducted by 52 Chinese postgraduate students in a semester. The findings reveal significant differences in the distributions of negotiation types and negotiation strategies. NoC occurred significantly more frequently than NoM and NoF. Each negotiation type had its major negotiation strategies and they had significantly higher percentages than the other...

Implementing explicit pronunciation instruction: The case of a nonnative English-speaking teacher
Joshua Gordon (2023)
Language Teaching Research 27-3
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas pronunciación profesor nativo

Resumen:

Studies in second language teacher cognition (SLTC) of pronunciation teachers have increased in the last 10 years, due mainly to the fact that the decisions teachers make about explicit instruction are critical for the development of second language (L2) pronunciation in learners. Although recent research has indicated that nonnative-speaking teachers (NNSTs) can be as effective as native-speaking teachers (NSTs) in pronunciation instruction, and that their training needs resemble those of NSTs, the way NNSTs implement L2 pronunciation instruction has not been studied extensively. This is important to understand given the number of NNSTs of English worldwide at present, and because of the potential benefits of nonnative-speaking pronunciation teaching models in general. In this study, I analysed the way an experienced NNST implemented...

‘Not my cup of tea’: The effect of proficiency, frequency, and congruency on L2 knowledge of idioms
Afnan Farooqui, Suhad Sonbul (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: expresiones idiomáticas competencia léxica influencia de la L1

Resumen:

Factors that predict second language (L2) collocation knowledge have been extensively studied, but research on predictors of L2 knowledge of idioms is still limited. The aim of the present study is to examine the effect of various factors established in L2 collocation research on idioms. These include L2 proficiency, idiom frequency, and congruency status (whether the idiom can be literally translated into the first language or L1). To that end, 225 L1-Arabic–L2-English speakers completed three measures (familiarity rating, meaningfulness rating, and meaning recall) involving 72 English idioms, half congruent and half incongruent. Additionally, the participants completed a vocabulary size test as a rough measure of their English proficiency. We initially examined the association between the ratings provided by the L2 participants and...

Digitizing the story-writing process for EFL primary learners: An exploratory study
Anisa Cheung (2024)
Language Teaching Research 28-4
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: expresión escrita storytelling/narración tecnología educativa

Resumen:

The benefits of using digital storytelling are well documented in the literature. Whether and how these advantages can be extended to digital story-writing, especially for young learners, remains underexplored. Recent advancement in technology has the potential of streamlining the stages of planning and revising in a process approach to second language writing. The present study examined how English teachers in two Hong Kong primary schools adopted a process approach to teach digital story-writing. They planned eight writing lessons for 10 Primary 3–4 classes. Students were taught to use Google Slides to write their stories on iPads and complete a recording in small groups, which were then published on an online platform. Findings from focus-group interviews, lesson observations and student writings revealed that students were highly...

Resumen:

Texto completo

A central concern among qualitative researchers over the last two decades has been enhancing its visibility and credibility, particularly among quantitative researchers as well as general audiences. Addressing calls for top-down insights to help stakeholders of research take stock of an increasingly large and complex literature body, this bibliometric analysis provides quantitative insights into 3,758 qualitative studies in language education, published in 34 major academic journals from 1999 to 2021. It investigates patterns of research productivity across authors, their institutions and the countries these are located in, the journals authors publish in, the research approaches they use, the...

Language Teaching Research 29-4
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación pronunciación creencias y actitudes de los estudiantes

Resumen:

This study investigated the relationship between learner beliefs about peer feedback and development of second language (L2) pronunciation skills after peer feedback on pronunciation had been used in the classroom. Seventy-four first-year learners of German were assigned to a peer feedback provider group, a peer feedback receiver group, and a control group. After completing a questionnaire designed to elicit learner beliefs about peer feedback, the provider group and the receiver group received general pronunciation training. Following the training, the provider group gave feedback to peers on their pronunciation and the receiver group listened to this feedback. Participants’ learning gains were measured by means of native speaker comprehensibility ratings of their productions both before and after the intervention. Statistical...

Exploring the differential effects of growth mindset on bilingual learning engagement: A concurrent embedded mixed-methods study
Xili Wu, Shuneng Zhong, Rong Miao (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas multilingüismo motivación

Resumen:

Although the positive relationship between growth language mindsets and engagement has been consistently supported in previous empirical studies, the literature is dominated by quantitative approaches in the English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) contexts, neglecting the triangulation of qualitative data delving into how learners perceive the contribution of growth mindsets to engagement. Such neglect is especially notable among multilingual learners. Further, it remains unknown which dimensions of growth language mindset were the most influential for specific dimensions of engagement and whether the pattern was different for English learning and language other than English (LOTE) learning. To fill the gaps, the current study adopted a concurrent embedded mixed-methods approach with questionnaires and interviews. A total of 464 Chinese...

Scaffolded extensive reading: A concept drawn from two EFL reading programmes
Xiaomei Sun (2026)
Language Teaching Research 30-2
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: comprensión lectora andamiaje/scaffolding educación primaria y secundaria

Resumen:

Myriad studies have been conducted to test the benefits of extensive reading (ER) on second language (L2) acquisition, while limited research has addressed or sought solutions to the unpopularity of ER in L2 classrooms, especially in secondary teaching contexts. With the aim of exploring both teachers’ and students’ perceptions and practice of ER, this study reports on two reading programmes carried out in Chinese secondary schools with variations in educational development, teacher training opportunities, and students’ overall competence. Data were collected from a student questionnaire survey (n = 86), two interviews with teacher participants (n = 2), and one interview with student participants (n = 9), teachers’ reflective journals, and various documents related to the reading programmes. Thematic analysis was adopted to analyse...

Understanding Chinese English-as-a-Foreign-Language Learners’ Self-Regulated Learning: Insights from Q Methodology
Ziqian Lin, Zhijie Wang, Bin Shen (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: estrategias de aprendizaje aprendizaje autónomo metacognición

Resumen:

Texto completo

From a social cognitive perspective, self-regulated learning is essentially and increasingly recognized as a complex and dynamic experience. The use of self-regulated learning strategies is also inherently subjective, shaped by individuals’ experiences, beliefs, learning styles, and environmental influences. Although existing research has explored self-regulated learning via a complex dynamic system theory lens, relevant studies that depart from a learner’s point of view and elucidate complexity and subjectivity in their understanding of self-regulated learning strategy use remain limited. Researching the complexity of self-regulated learning in second language acquisition aids in fostering a...
