Effects of teacher intervention and type of peer feedback on student writing revision
Haiyang Sun, Mingchao Wang (2025)
Language Teaching Research 29-3
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación expresión escrita aprendizaje colaborativo

Resumen:

Peer feedback has been widely used in English as a foreign language (EFL) writing classes, but its effect is highly variable and its quality and validity are often questioned by students as well as teachers. This research aims to explore the effects of teacher intervention on student use of different types of peer feedback and on their self-revision of writing texts. The study employed a quasi-experimental design with two experimental groups receiving either the teacher’s direct correction for erroneous peer feedback or indication of inaccurate peer feedback with symbols and a control group receiving no teacher intervention on peer feedback. One hundred and ten non-English major graduate students in three parallel writing classes participated in the study. The study lasted for one and a half months, during which the participants...

Bridging the research–pedagogy gap: ESL teachers’ beliefs about L2 fluency and fluency-enhancing classroom practices
Ayano Kawasaki (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas creencias y actitudes de los profesores expresión oral

Resumen:

Despite substantial development in second-language (L2) fluency research, fluency remains underexplored in L2 teaching. Emerging evidence suggests that research-based fluency-enhancing activities are not fully utilized in classrooms, partly due to teachers’ relatively broad conceptualization of fluency. To address this issue, this study examines (1) teachers’ beliefs about fluency and fluency-enhancing activities and (2) the extent to which these beliefs are reflected in their classroom practices. By triangulating data from questionnaires, interviews, and classroom observations, this study contributes to the growing body of L2 fluency research, which has primarily focused on teachers’ self-reported data, thereby paving the way toward bridging the research–pedagogy gap. Using a mixed-methods approach, the analysis revealed (1) a...

Language teachers’ identity tensions and professional practice in intercultural teaching
Yang (Frank) Gong, Xuesong (Andy) Gao (2025)
Language Teaching Research 29-8
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: profesorado identidad competencia intercultural

Resumen:

Language teachers’ experiences of identity tensions present valuable opportunities for researchers to understand the complex role of professional identity in shaping language teachers’ instructional practice. This exploratory sequential mixed-method study reports on identity tensions as experienced by teachers of Chinese as an additional language (CAL), and its role in mediating their instructional practice in intercultural teaching. First, seven types of professional and sociocultural identities related to intercultural teaching were generated based on interview responses and observation field notes from 10 CAL teachers. One hundred and three CAL teachers were then surveyed to identify the roles of these identities in mediating their approaches to intercultural teaching. An exploratory factor analysis of the survey data suggested...

Pronunciation for Less Commonly Taught Languages: Teaching Beliefs and Practices
Amanda Huensch, Minjin Kim, Dustin Crowther (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: pronunciación creencias y actitudes de los profesores práctica docente

Resumen:

Texto completo

Evidence has mounted for the effectiveness of second language pronunciation instruction. Given the critical role instructors play in implementing effective instruction, one line of inquiry has been to better understand instructors’ beliefs and practices as they relate to second language pronunciation teaching and learning. A critical gap, however, is that such research has focused primarily on English, with only limited focus on languages other than English. Amongst languages other than English, there remains next to no emphasis on less commonly taught languages. Such languages should be of interest given a well-documented dearth of quality instructional materials. This study investigated less...

Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: pragmática actos de habla diferencias individuales

Resumen:

This study investigated the differential effects of implicit and explicit instruction of refusal strategies in English and whether and how the impacts of instruction methods interact with learners’ working memory capacity (WMC). 78 learners of English were assigned to three groups (explicit, implicit, and control). Implicit instruction was operationalized through input enhancement and provision of recast. In the explicit instruction group, participants received description and exemplification of refusal strategies and were provided with explicit corrective feedback. Prior to the treatment, all participants took WMC test, Discourse Completion Test (DCT) and completed a pragmatics comprehension questionnaire (CQ). Results revealed that explicit instruction was more effective than implicit instruction for both production and...

Does vocalization enhance L2 formulaic sequence learning?
Ryotaro Hashizaki (2026)
Language Teaching Research 30-6
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario colocaciones fraseología

Resumen:

In foreign or second language (L2) classrooms, learners often vocalize when learning new words. Indeed, previous studies have demonstrated that vocalization is effective for memorization and this is called the production effect (PE). Furthermore, PE has been observed in the learning of L2 word meanings as well. However, whether this can be applied to larger language items is unknown. Thus, the present study tested the effect of vocalization on learning L2 formulaic sequence (FS), a sequence of words such as collocations. To achieve this, the participants in the present study learned 90 verb–noun collocations and were tested on recognition of their forms and meanings both immediately and one week after the learning session. The result showed that vocalization enhances learning of forms and meanings of L2 FSs, and this effect is...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: telecolaboración e intercambios virtuales motivación competencia intercultural

Resumen:

While computer-mediated communication and online exchanges between students in second language (L2) pedagogy and research has long been established, recent technological advances have seen a growth in the number of projects undertaken and consequently studies published. This study utilized a mixed-methods approach to measure the effects on specific aspects of motivation for students learning English following a 10-week, multicultural virtual exchange project. Participants interacted both synchronously and asynchronously with other non-native English speakers from 10 different countries to make friends, share cultural interests, and practice English in a real-world, non-classroom setting. At the end of the project, participants were asked to complete a survey based on Dörnyei’s concept of the L2 motivational self system and Yashima’s...

The Activity Design Typology: A Practitioner-Centered Approach to Understanding Task Structure
Lara Bryfonski, Caitlyn Pineault (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enfoque por tareas creación de materiales formación de profesores

Resumen:

As the central construct in task-based language teaching (TBLT), “task” has been defined in a myriad of ways. Though popular criterion-based definitions offer a tantalizingly straightforward description of the construct, they have, at times, proved difficult to apply in practitioner contexts. With over 17 definitions identified in the literature, prominent scholars have advocated for efforts that offer a more unified understanding of “task” that may be better able to support task-based language teaching in implementation initiatives. This exploratory, qualitative study examines how two cohorts of K–16 U.S.-based world language teachers (n = 35) approached task design in a task-based teacher education program from a materials development perspective. An analysis of the 114 activities teachers created revealed that although submissions...

Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: aptitud lingüística input colocaciones

Resumen:

The purpose of this study was to find out, whether three methods of presenting input, were effective in relation to language aptitude. Persian-speaking learners of English were provided with 20 grammatical collocations (verb–preposition collocations) embedded in authentic passages, lexically/grammatically elaborated passages, and lexically/grammatically elaborated passages with shorter sentences and enhanced target collocations. Participants were assessed on their receptive knowledge and productive knowledge of the grammatical collocations by a posttest and a delayed posttest, and their scores were correlated with various measures of language aptitude. The results suggested that modified elaborated input, which provided more focus on form (FonF), positively affected immediate and long-term gains in receptive knowledge and ruled out...

Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: aptitud lingüística cognición y procesamiento diferencias individuales

Resumen:

Despite previous research having demonstrated the comparative effects of processing instruction and output-based instruction, further investigation is required to examine the relationships between individual differences in cognitive abilities and these instructional types. This study investigated the associations among three instructional approaches and learners’ language aptitude and working memory in acquiring four Chinese classifiers. Eighty-six second language (L2) Chinese learners from one Chinese university were divided into three experimental groups – processing instruction (PI), meaning-based output instruction (MOI), combined instruction (CI) – and a control group. Tests measuring treatment effects included an untimed grammatical judgment test and an oral elicited imitation test. The LLAMA test and a counting span task were...
