Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos motivación diferencias individuales

Resumen:

Texto completo

While language anxiety is known to be a strong predictor of the second language (L2) achievement for decades, there has been a relative lack of empirical attention to establishing which one – anxiety or achievement – influences the other. The present study, based on a cross-lagged panel analysis, examined the causal relationships between language anxiety and L2 achievement, each of which was measured at three times points across 17 weeks. The results supported the directional relationship from L2 achievement at Time 2 to language anxiety at Time 3 while the opposite directional relationship from language anxiety at Time 2 to L2 achievement at Time 3 was not supported. Thus, our results suggest...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación factores afectivos enfoque por tareas

Resumen:

Despite extensive research in task-based language learning, the role of learners’ motivational dispositions in their task experience and performance has remained underexplored. To help bridge that gap, this study investigated the relationships between second language (L2) learners’ chronic regulatory focus and their oral task emotions and performance. One hundred and thirty-three high school students studying English as a foreign language in China completed a regulatory focus questionnaire, an English proficiency self-rating questionnaire, an oral opinion task, and a post-task questionnaire measuring their task anxiety and enjoyment. Multiple regression results showed that the learners’ chronic promotion focus positively predicted their task enjoyment, which, in turn, predicted their oral task performance. In addition, the...

The role of task sequencing in fluency, accuracy, and complexity: Investigating the SSARC model of pedagogic task sequencing
Aleksandra Malicka (2020)
Language Teaching Research 24-5

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enfoque por tareas expresión oral cognición y procesamiento

Resumen:

This study set out to test the theoretical premise of the SSARC model of pedagogic task sequencing, which postulates that tasks should be sequenced for learners from cognitively simple to complex. This experiment compared the performance of three tasks differing in cognitive complexity in a simple–complex sequence versus in the absence of any other tasks. There were two groups in the study: (1) participants who performed the three tasks in the simple–complex sequence, and (2) participants who performed either the simple, the complex, or the most complex task. The participants’ speech was analysed using fluency, accuracy, and complexity measures. The results indicate that simple–complex sequencing led to a higher speech rate, greater dysfluency, enhanced accuracy, and greater structural complexity, as compared to individual task...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos motivación expresión oral

Resumen:

Grounded in Seligman and Csikszentmihalyi’s Three Pillars Theory, this study investigated the influence of foreign language enjoyment, growth language mindset, and classroom environment on the willingness to communicate in the context of learning Chinese as a second language (CSL). Despite the rapid global growth of Chinese learning communities in recent decades, the effect of these positive individual and contextual factors within CSL settings remains largely underexplored. To bridge this gap, the study conducted path analysis on data collected from 207 linguistically and culturally diverse CSL learners in China. The results showed that foreign language enjoyment not only directly enhanced students’ willingness to communicate in Chinese, but also exerted an indirect effect through the chain mediating process of growth language...

Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos enseñanza en línea e híbrida estrategias de aprendizaje

Resumen:

This qualitative study explores learners’ perceptions of the sources of language anxiety in Chinese as a second language (L2) learning in online environments, and how they cope with it. Nine participants, all of whom experienced high levels of L2 anxiety, were selected from a group enrolled in synchronous online Chinese classes during the Covid-19 pandemic. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that learning languages online presents a unique anxiety-provoking situation, resulting in several distinctive sources of L2 anxiety, such as a lack of self-discipline, difficulty adjusting to the transition, fear of online exposure, unnatural online environment for interaction, etc. In response, learners employed a variety of strategies, such as snacking, reviewing...

Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas inteligencia artificial ChatGPT

Resumen:

This study explores how 30 Korean English as a foreign language (EFL) learners at three proficiency levels (CEFR A2, B1, and B2) manage third position repair during voice-based role-play tasks with ChatGPT-4. Over 12 hours and 30 minutes of recorded interactions were analyzed using conversation analysis, complemented by retrospective verbal reports (RVRs) to capture both interactional patterns and learner perceptions. The findings show clear proficiency-related differences. A2 learners (n = 10) consistently abandoned repair, either by switching to their first language or abruptly terminating the conversation, and none of their TPR sequences resulted in successful repair. B1 learners (n = 10) managed repair partially through simple repetition or confirmation checks but often prioritized progressivity over intersubjectivity;...

Student Perceptions of a Speaking Course Enhanced by Extensive Reading within a Self-Determination Theory Framework
Akira Iwata (2026)

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación comprensión lectora expresión oral

Resumen:

This study examines a potential tension in the application of self-determination theory to an extensive reading-enhanced speaking course in an English-as-a-foreign-language context. Although extensive reading is widely assumed to foster autonomous motivation by satisfying learners’ basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, its implementation within formal instructional settings often involves mandatory reading quotas and graded components that may introduce controlling pressures. Drawing on data from 142 Japanese university English majors enrolled in a year-long extensive reading-integrated speaking course, this study investigated changes in motivational regulation and basic psychological needs satisfaction using Bayesian analyses. Results revealed strong evidence for increases in all three basic...

Teacher–student relationships moderate the link between socioeconomic status and foreign language learning: Evidence from China
Lihong Ma, Leifeng Xiao, Zhi Liu (2025)
Language Teaching Research 29-7

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: inclusión y equidad diferencias individuales profesorado

Resumen:

The importance of socioeconomic status (SES) in foreign language learning has received increasing attention. However, previous research mainly examined the direct link between SES and foreign language learning, and few explored what might mitigate this link, especially in collectivistic culture. Based on social capital theory and the attachment theory, this study explored the moderating role of teacher–student relationships (TSRs) in the link between SES and English learning in China. Data were collected from 1,181 grade 8 and 300 grade 11 students in China using self-reported SES questionnaire, TSRs scale, and English achievement test. The results show that TSRs negatively moderated the association between SES and English performance of Chinese students both in grade 8 and grade 11, but the moderating effect of TSRs was slightly...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas motivación multilingüismo

Resumen:

Texto completo

While interest in the learning of a language other than English (LOTE) has increased, research on how to foster learners’ motivation towards learning a LOTE is still scarce. With a specific focus on learners’ ideal LOTE and multilingual selves, this article reports on an intervention study which employed near peer role model (NPRM) to construct Chinese undergraduates’ LOTE learning motivation. The research aim was to explore the role of the near peer role modeling in nurturing the development of the LOTE-related facets of learners’ ideal selves. Open questionnaires, interviews and written journals were used to collect data at one Chinese university over the course of one academic term. Findings...

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación expresión escrita aprendizaje colaborativo

Resumen:

Texto completo

Despite the proliferation of research on how second language (L2) learners engage with feedback on L2 writing in recent years, little is known about how young and low-proficiency L2 learners process teacher feedback. The present study investigated how Chinese lower-secondary school learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) cognitively and behaviourally engaged with teacher feedback in two conditions: individual written languaging and collaborative oral languaging. Eighty-one students (aged 13–14 years, A1–A2 English proficiency) from two classes and two English teachers at a public lower-secondary school in China participated in this study. Comprehensive teacher feedback (focusing on...
