Textual thinking as evidenced through think-alouds: Designing meanings in interpreting authentic L2 web texts
Kristen Michelson, James F. Lee, Mourad Abdennebi (2025)
Language Teaching Research 29-4

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: comprensión lectora multimodalidad alfabetización

Resumen:

Recent scholarship in multiliteracies-oriented pedagogies has advocated for greater attention to fostering ‘textual thinking’, understood as forms of literacy that consider the complexities of semiotic choices made by authors, and their underlying meanings, rhetorical purposes, and cultural contexts. This kind of engagement with texts calls upon readers to focus on form–meaning connections, and shifts the focus of reading purposes, toward reading as a form of participation in everyday literacy practices, and reading as a way of thinking critically about representation and communication. This article presents findings from an empirical study investigating the reading processes of second language (L2) French learners while interpreting an authentic multimodal web text, guided by tasks informed by multiliteracies. A prompted think-aloud...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos aprendizaje autónomo profesorado

Resumen:

The current study investigated the relationship between students’ perceived teacher–student relationship (SPTSR) and their performance in English via multiple mediation effects of resilience and autonomous learning in the Chinese English as a foreign language (EFL) context. The participants were 15,184 eighth-graders from China. Results of the multilevel mediation model revealed that after controlling for students’ gender, socioeconomic status (SES), and school type, the positive association between SPTSR and students’ academic outcomes in English was partially and serially mediated by the resilience and autonomous learning. The current study sheds new light on the crucial mediating roles of resilience and autonomous learning in improving EFL learners’ English proficiency. We recommend that English language teachers establish a...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: interacción motivación estrategias de aprendizaje

Resumen:

Classroom relationships represent a complex and dynamic system, in which students’ relationships with teachers and peers are intertwined with each other. A person-centered approach was used to investigate how multiple characteristics of a good-quality relationship (i.e., validation, caring, and instrumental guidance) with teachers and peers combined to form English-as-a-foreign-language primary school students’ classroom relationships profiles. Four distinct profiles of classroom relationships were identified: Supportive, Teacher-oriented, Moderate, and Isolated. Whether students’ gender and English proficiency level significntly predicted their likelihood of belonging to each profile was tested...

Resumen:

Texto completo

This exploratory study investigated second language (L2) teachers’ perceptions and assessment of young learners’ (aged 8–10 years) engagement, particularly focusing on the definition of engagement, its indicators, the teachers’ assessment of engagement during live task performances in intact classes, and their use of engagement-promoting strategies. The participants included 12 experienced L2 teachers recruited from various primary schools in Vietnam. Their perceptions regarding young learner engagement, its indicators, live engagement assessments, and engagement-promoting strategies were elicited using multiple tools, including semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, field notes,...

Resumen:

Texto completo

Chatbots and other conversational agents based on speech recognition and processing technologies have been gaining ground in the field of language education. Although previous research has shown that automatic recognition of second language (L2) speech is difficult, little attention has been paid to how L2 teachers and learners interact with such technology when used as an interactional participant in classroom settings. Addressing this gap, this article provides a qualitative analysis of interactional practices of unplanned and situated pronunciation instruction as a teacher and 10- to 13-year-old young learners of L2 English complete robot-assisted language learning (RALL) activities in a...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas feedback/retroalimentación CALL/ELAO

Resumen:

This study investigated the intensity and efficacy of automated corrective feedback (CF) in a tutorial CALL (computer-assisted language learning) environment during form-focused drills as compared with those of instructor CF on free writing in the classroom. The English simple past tense, a previously learned target structure, was selected as the target structure. A hundred and fifty-two Chinese intermediate learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) were randomly assigned to six groups and completed three writing tasks: a pretest, an immediate posttest, and a delayed posttest. The six groups included two automated feedback groups (direct correction on an error-correction test and metalinguistic feedback on an error-correction test), two feedback-on-writing groups (direct correction and metalinguistic feedback), a group who...

Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas gamificación aprendizaje colaborativo

Resumen:

Addressing the pervasive issue of low engagement in Chinese junior high school English classrooms, this study evaluates the efficacy of gamified cooperative teaching (GCT) using a mixed-methods design. By integrating surveys, pre- and postintervention vocabulary tests, systematic classroom observations, and semi-structured interviews, the research examines the behavioral and cognitive shifts of a cohort of seventh-grade English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) learners. Findings indicate that the implementation of GCT was associated with a notable increase in active classroom participation and improved vocabulary retention compared with traditional instructional methods. Qualitative data from interviews and observations further suggest that the gamified collaborative framework effectively fostered student motivation and enhanced classroom...

Learning new verbs with known cue words: The relative effects of noun and adverb cues
Kiwamu Kasahara, Akifumi Yanagisawa (2024)
Language Teaching Research 28-1
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario competencia léxica cognición y procesamiento

Resumen:

Research has shown that learning a known-and-unknown word combination leads to greater learning than learning an unknown word alone (Kasahara, 2010, 2011). These studies found that attaching a known adjective to an unknown noun can help learners remember the unknown noun. Kasahara (2015) found that a known verb can serve as an effective cue to remember an unknown noun in a known-and-unknown combination. To examine useful cues to learn unknown verbs, this study compared verb (unknown) + noun (known) combinations to verb (unknown) + adverb (known) combinations. Additionally, we explored how learners’ vocabulary size would affect the known-and-unknown two-word combination learning to deepen our understanding of the characteristics of students who benefit from combination learning. The participants in each group learned 18 two-word...

The effects of working memory and declarative memory on instructed second language vocabulary learning: Insights from intelligent CALL
Simón Ruiz, Patrick Rebuschat, Detmar Meurers (2021)
Language Teaching Research 25-4

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario CALL/ELAO diferencias individuales

Resumen:

The extent to which learners benefit from instruction may be largely dependent on their individual abilities. However, there is relatively little work on the interaction between instructional effectiveness in second language learning and learner individual factors. In this study, we investigated the relationship between instruction, individual differences in cognitive abilities (working memory and declarative memory), and second language vocabulary acquisition in the context of web-based intelligent computer assisted language learning (ICALL). To this end, 127 adult learners of English, predominantly advanced-level, German-speaking learners, read news texts on the web for about two weeks using an ICALL system under two instructional conditions: form-focused and meaning-focused instruction. Learners in the form-focused condition read...

Engaging in dialogue during collaborative writing: The role of affective, cognitive, and social engagement
Boya Zhang (2025)
Language Teaching Research 29-1
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: expresión escrita aprendizaje colaborativo interacción

Resumen:

Collaborative writing (CW) involves two or more students writing a single text together. Previous studies mainly focused on students’ cognitive engagement in CW and investigated their attention to various language-related problems during task interaction. However, little CW research to date has considered that engagement in language-related discussions can manifest from three dimensions: cognitive, social, and affective. Focusing on the multidimensional characteristics of engagement, this study investigated how Russian learners’ social and affective reactions influence their focus on language use while they completed a CW task. Drawing on Svalberg’s framework of engagement with language to identify the three dimensions of engagement, I conducted a mixed-method approach towards analysing the audio-recorded collaborative dialogues by...
