The effects of teacher motivational practice on learner L2 achievement: A self-determination theory perspective using structural equation modeling
Fakieh Alrabai, Abdullah Alamer (2024)

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación práctica docente aprendizaje autónomo

Resumen:

A central point that has attracted researchers’ attention for several decades is related to establishing the causal relationship between student motivation and second language (L2) achievement. Based on self-determination theory, we investigated the effects of motivational interventions applied by English language teachers on subsequent L2 achievement through the meditating effect of students’ basic psychological need for autonomy, intrinsic motivation, and motivational intensity. To obtain precise results, we applied structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine whether the impact of the intervention on L2 achievement was direct and/or indirect. The results of SEM indicated that the effect is both direct and indirect, and the model variables explained approximately 87% of the variance in students’ achievement. Moreover, the indirect...

Temas: formación de profesores teoría sociocultural profesorado

Resumen:

Given emerging trends in where, why, how, and to what end English language teachers are being prepared, we argue that greater attention to the design, enactment, and consequences of language teacher education (LTE) pedagogy is critical in order to meet the needs of current and future English language teachers in an increasingly diverse, mobile, unequal, and globalized world. Through our experiences and conviction as researchers and teacher educators, we position a Vygotskian sociocultural theoretical perspective as foundational to informing and transforming LTE pedagogy. In this essay, we offer eight interrelated propositions that we believe constitute LTE pedagogy as a central domain for the knowledge-base of LTE.

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: revisión bibliográfica

Temas: translingüismo expresión escrita multilingüismo

Resumen:

Translingual pedagogies have been proposed and implemented to respond to the increasing linguistic and cultural diversity in today’s classrooms. However, the findings of translingual pedagogies on English as an additional language (EAL) writing vary from facilitating to undermining teaching and learning. To understand the empirical landscape of this young and fast-growing research area, I systematically reviewed 62 studies with a research synthesis method to explore what translingual activities have been implemented and how they have impacted EAL writing teaching and learning (including both K-12 and post-secondary contexts). The findings reveal that various translingual activities, such as self-reflective writing and literacy narrative, have been enacted in EAL writing teaching and learning. These activities have been practiced in...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: estrategias de aprendizaje expresión escrita comprensión lectora

Resumen:

The interconnectedness of reading and writing necessitates a dynamic approach to learning, particularly for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Self-regulated reading-to-write (SR-R2W) emerges as a promising approach, empowering EFL learners to consciously integrate reading and writing to address writing weaknesses and enhance writing proficiency. However, individual differences in EFL learners’ self-regulated R2W and writing strategy use remain largely unexplored. This study proposed a revised self-regulated writing (RSRW) framework by integrating SR-R2W into the existing self-regulated writing framework. Building on this framework, the study identified distinct SR-R2W and RSRW profiles and examined their associations with English reading, writing, and general performance, as well as motivational beliefs. Participants were...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: inteligencia artificial corpus fraseología

Resumen:

With a pretest/posttest/delayed posttest design, this quasi-experimental study compares the effectiveness of corpus use versus generative AI (GenAI) use in helping undergraduate students learn multiword constructions (MWCs) in written academic English and examines the moderating effects of learners’ learning styles. Six intact writing classes with a total of 210 students were assigned to one of three instructional groups with each group including two intact classes: Experimental Group 1 (using data-driven learning [DDL] only), Experimental Group 2 (employing GenAI-assisted learning combined with corpus analysis of teacher-generated concordance lines), and Control Group. MWC learning was measured by a MWC production test and a writing test that assessed both the overall writing quality and the frequency and number of types of MWCs used...

Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas interacción actos de habla

Resumen:

This study is theoretically grounded in interactional sociolinguistics, drawing specifically on speech act theory and politeness strategies to discuss how language choices negotiate social relations. It investigates classroom power dynamics by analyzing how teachers construct identities with directive speech acts. The research employs an ethnographic microanalysis to analyze discourse in a video-recorded interaction in a Portuguese as a foreign language (PFL) classroom for Chinese learners at a university in Macau. This methodological approach allows for a fine-grained examination of the linguistic design of directives and their impact on classroom interaction. The analysis reveals that the teacher strategically wields directives to enact interconnected identity positions, each shaping a distinct power dynamic: a negotiatory authority...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza en línea e híbrida interacción competencia intercultural

Resumen:

This study investigates whether culturally adaptive teaching strategies (CATS) enhance instructional effectiveness in one-to-one online Chinese language teaching. Drawing on a controlled experimental design, 177 learners from South Korea (n = 42), Japan (n = 38), Vietnam (n = 32), the United States (n = 28), and several European countries (n = 37) were randomly assigned into either an experimental or a control group. The experimental group received eight culture-specific interaction protocols embedded within one-to-one teacher–learner interactions, while the control group followed the platform’s standard instructional script. Instructional effectiveness was assessed through both classroom interaction and learning outcomes. Classroom interaction was analysed through systematic coding of lesson recordings, focusing on learners’...

Resumen:

Focusing on multiple intelligence (MI) and critical thinking (CT), which are often thought to be the important factors in improving second language (L2) learners’ skills, has been the major concern of researchers in recent decades. This study investigated the (possible) relationship among MI, CT, and Iranian English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ speaking skill. Seventy intermediate participants were chosen from Shahrekord University, Iran, and a language institute in Yazd, Iran. To identify the participants’ MI profiles, the Persian translation of McKenzie’s MI Inventory Questionnaire was administered to the participants. Also, to determine the participants’ CT, the Persian translation of California CT Skill Test was used. Thereafter, the participants’ speaking skill was measured by the IELTS (International English Language...

Temas: enfoque por tareas expresión escrita géneros textuales

Resumen:

In the literature on task-based language teaching (TBLT), task repetition and task rehearsal have frequently been used interchangeably. However, this distinction, identified as potentially significant (Ellis, 2019), is noteworthy due to the potential impact of participants’ awareness of future repetitions on second language (L2) task performance. Given the lack of empirical exploration regarding task repetition and task rehearsal distinction in the context of L2 writing, this study investigates how task rehearsal and task repetition affect the narrative and argumentative writing performances of 120 students of English as a second language (ESL) from a U.S. university. They were randomly assigned to four groups. Groups 1 and 3 wrote the narrative text initially, repeated the same task, and then proceeded to write the argumentative text...
