‘May I do something for you?’: The effects of audio-visual material (captioned and non-captioned) on EFL pragmatic learning
Júlia Barón, M. Luz Celaya (2022)
Language Teaching Research 26-2
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: pragmática materiales audiovisuales actos de habla

Resumen:

The present study deals with the effect of audio-visual material for second language (L2) pragmatic learning in the foreign language classroom. More specifically, it analyzes whether being exposed to captioned and non-captioned input in an experimental condition entailing no instruction on pragmatics might have any influence on the learners’ pragmatic performance. To this aim, two intact classes ( N = 31) of learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) at a B1 level were exposed to videos with captions and without captions, respectively. Before and after watching the videos, all the students were asked to carry out a role-play task with situations like those in the videos. A mixed-methods approach was used to analyze the learners’ performance in terms of types and number of strategies to perform speech acts (quantitative) and in...

Texto completo

This article reports on a study that explored Japanese university students’ evolving motivational regulation by mapping its changes over one year of their studies in a collaborative project-based learning environment. An autonomy-supportive collaborative intervention was delivered to the 19 participants with varying or no experience of communicative language teaching and study abroad. Our cluster-based analysis of multiple questionnaire responses revealed increased motivation among the participants. Three learners were selected to represent each clustering group based on the unique characteristics of their motivational trajectories over the year, which reflect the mediating impacts of their...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: comprensión lectora vocabulario uso de la L1 en el aula

Resumen:

The aim of this experiment was to investigate how glossing influences second language (L2)reading comprehension in relation to text difficulty and the two local and global meaning representations. Fifty-eight undergraduate students were asked to read three easy, moderate, and difficult texts and, following each passage, answer twenty comprehension questions targeting local and global concepts in one of the two first-language-glossed and unglossed conditions. Half of the participants in each group were supposed to think aloud while reading. The results revealed a significant difference between the performance of glossed and unglossed groups on comprehension of local concepts in all three difficulty levels. However, the impact of glossing on comprehension of global concepts was significantly influenced by text difficulty. The...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enfoque por tareas creación de materiales tecnología educativa

Resumen:

Research on task-based language teaching (TBLT) has gained significant attention in recent years, yet studies on task design have primarily focused on manipulating task variables for research purposes. Little is known about teachers’ design processes, their choices, and how they balance design variables for pedagogical tasks. This study investigates task design processes in primary school contexts using an innovative web-based design tool. Thirty-five primary school teachers participated, with their design activities captured through think-aloud protocols. This approach provided a detailed view of teachers’ strategies, challenges, and iterative refinements during task creation. The findings reveal previously undocumented aspects of task design, including how teachers navigate the task cycle, their cognitive processes during design,...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación creencias y actitudes de los estudiantes factores afectivos

Resumen:

Engaging students in the second language (L2) classroom is a critical task that requires a clear understanding of the multilayered characteristics of the L2 classroom and the motivational mechanisms through which these characteristics influence student engagement. This study contributes to the L2 engagement literature in this regard by examining the relationship among students’ expectancy and task value belief, their perception of the three L2 classroom conditions, namely classroom structure, teaching relevance, and peer support, and their engagement in an instructed L2 learning setting. Structural equation modelling was employed to analyse self-report data collected from 413 first year students of English as a foreign language (EFL) in Vietnam. Results suggest that teaching relevance and peer support significantly predicted students...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas inteligencia artificial alfabetización en IA

Resumen:

Artificial intelligence (AI) has taken the educational field by storm, offering unique affordances for addressing diverse learners’ needs, including those of English language learners (ELLs). Harnessing the pedagogical value of AI, however, largely depends on teachers’ preparedness to integrate the new technology effectively into teaching. Pedagogical integration of AI is especially important for pre-service teachers (PSTs), who often struggle to gain enough technological fluency for teaching ELLs due to limited teaching experience and minimal exposure to field-specific technology experimentation. Given AI’s potential to support differentiated instruction, it is vital for PSTs to learn to use the technology effectively to teach ELLs. Grounded in the technological pedagogical content knowledge framework, this mixed-methods study...

Practitioner research plays a crucial role in education because of its applied nature and its ability to address pertinent issues within learning and teaching contexts. Exploratory practice (EP) is a form of practitioner research that emphasizes puzzles while striving to understand and improve students’ and teachers’ quality of life in the language classroom. Our puzzlement as EP practitioners began to take shape as we received a variety of feedback – both positive and negative – on our EP-infused lessons from our past students. Therefore, we started to ponder the enduring repercussions of an EP experience on participants’ subsequent learning and quality of life, extending beyond the immediate...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario enseñanza a niños educación infantil

Resumen:

This study investigates the effectiveness of multisensory learning (MSL) compared to traditional (TRD) teaching methods in enhancing English vocabulary acquisition among English as a foreign language (EFL) kindergarten-aged learners in Amman, Jordan. A total of 49 children were divided equally into two groups: one receiving traditional instruction and the other exposed to multisensory techniques, including visual aids, auditory input, specific activities, and experiences. Pre- and post-tests were used to assess vocabulary retrieval through two tasks. Descriptive statistics revealed that the MSL group outperformed the TRD group in both tasks, with higher mean scores and reduced variability, indicating more consistent learning outcomes. An independent sample t -test confirmed that these differences were statistically significant. The...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: colocaciones enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario atención a la forma

Resumen:

This study investigates the relative effectiveness of two methods for teaching a set of English verb–noun collocations: form-focused instruction (FFI) and concept-based instruction (CBI). The sample comprised 73 Chinese-speaking learners of English taking intermediate English courses, who were randomly assigned to one of three groups: an FFI intervention group, a CBI intervention group, and a control group. In order to determine the effects of the two instructional methods, the participants’ collocational knowledge was measured in three ways: via form recall testing, form recognition testing, and meaning recall testing. Specifically, all of the participants took pretests, immediate posttests, and one-week delayed posttests. The results of a comparison of the learning gains between the three groups showed that the CBI and FFI...

The impact of future L2 selves and positive emotions on self-regulated writing strategies: A mixed method approach
Yabing Wang, Jian Xu, Huiyin Li (2026)
Language Teaching Research 30-6
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación factores afectivos estrategias de aprendizaje

Resumen:

While extensive research supported the facilitative role of motivation in general self-regulated learning (SRL) strategy use, its connection to writing-specific SRL strategy use remains underexplored. Furthermore, the exploration of the interplay between motivation and SRL strategy use in second or foreign (L2) writing was absent within the motivational-self system. Even less is known about the mechanism between motivational factors and SRL strategy use in L2 writing. This study aims to fill the gap by testing the mediating role of positive emotions (enjoyment, pride, and hope) between future L2 writing selves (ideal L2 self and ought-to L2 self) and SRL strategy use in the Chinese English as a foreign language (EFL) writing context with a mixed method design incorporating both quantitative and qualitative methods. Three hundred and...
