Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación interacción expresión oral

Resumen:

This quasi-experimental classroom study examines the effects of recasts and negotiated prompts on oral interactions in a foreign language (FL) context where the instructional approach primarily focuses on grammar and accuracy. Ninety adult native speakers of Mandarin Chinese from two intact classes were randomly assigned to one of two experimental groups (recast or negotiated prompt) or a control group, and were asked to complete pre-/post-tests on their use of question and past tense forms in English. Between the pre-test and the post-tests, the learners of the two experimental groups had three treatment lessons for feedback outside their usual English classes, the interaction data of which are reported. ANOVA analyses revealed that recasts were highly effective for accuracy development of wh-questions, interrogative questions and...

Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: comprensión oral comunicación no verbal multimodalidad

Resumen:

Few studies have explored the influence of a speaker’s accent and visual (facial and gestural) cues on second-language (L2) listening comprehension. The current mixed-methods between-groups design investigated: (1) the effects of accent and visual cues on Arab students’ comprehension of recorded lectures delivered by two speakers: first language (L1) American English and second language (L2) English (strong Vietnamese accent), (2) students’ assessments of the comprehensibility and English nativelikeness of the accents, and (3) students’ perceptions of and preferences for visual cues in communication. A total of 120 Arab university students were distributed across three stimulus conditions: auditory-visual (AV)-gesture-face, AV-face, and A-only within two accent conditions (L1, L2 English). Materials included: a listening comprehension...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario fraseología

Resumen:

The present study employed a mixed methods quasi-experimental design to investigate the effectiveness of applying motivational strategies and mental imagery (i.e. visionary techniques) to facilitate second language (L2) vocabulary learning. Four treatment sessions were integrated into a six-week language course offered to 150 intermediate students in nine classes of English as a foreign language (EFL), which were divided into three groups: motivational group, visionary group and control group. The target language items involved 56 formulaic sequences, and the outcome was assessed by a multiple-choice vocabulary test. The quantitative results were accompanied by qualitative data, aimed at gaining a deeper understanding of the test results. The findings revealed that both motivational strategies and visionary techniques proved effective...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos estrategias de aprendizaje reflexión docente

Resumen:

This article recounts my experience in enhancing my students’ boredom regulation by designing, implementing, and evaluating a strategy instruction project. The project was undertaken with 25 Thai university students enrolled in my English oral communication course for 15 weeks. The project began with exploring how and why my students experienced boredom in my classroom and their habitual boredom coping strategies while examining and modifying the initial design of my strategy instruction. Between weeks 8 and 12, I implemented five boredom regulation strategy sessions by using reappraisals and boredom coping as key components. Students engaged in guided practice, developed their own boredom regulation strategy toolkit, shared their ideas with peers, and reflected on their strategy use. Triangulating data from whole-class surveys, focus...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: español como lengua extranjera feedback/retroalimentación expresión escrita

Resumen:

Despite its widespread use, the efficacy of written corrective feedback (WCF) in foreign language teaching remains a subject of debate. Furthermore, methodological challenges involved in its study, especially concerning vocabulary development, have resulted in contradictory and inconclusive findings in the field. This article assesses the effects of five WCF formats on the lexical development of 21 C1-level adult learners of second language (L2) Spanish in a real classroom setting. On one hand, we analysed four different tasks written by the participants, totaling 84, in terms of lexical sophistication, diversity, density, and accuracy. On the other hand, for every lexical error found, we annotated and tracked its type, the WCF format provided by the teacher, and whether it was subsequently corrected or repeated by the participants....

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: dramatización profesorado práctica docente

Resumen:

Research in language learning indicates that process drama (PD), an educational approach where students and teachers work in and out of role to explore themes and issues, can be well suited to the Japanese higher education (HE) context. Despite the benefits highlighted in the literature, PD remains a niche approach to language teaching and learning, with a limited number of practitioners in Japan. This study seeks to uncover language teachers’ experiences of becoming Process Drama Practitioners (PDPs) and using and sharing PD as an English language teaching approach in Japanese HE. Data were collected via in-depth interviews with six experienced PDPs. The findings indicate that prior positive experiences with drama was an encouraging factor of the adoption and self-directed initial use of PD in their teaching practices. Positive...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas interacción pensamiento crítico

Resumen:

This action research study explored the influence of questioning strategies on fostering critical thinking in English as a foreign language (EFL) classrooms among Arabic-speaking elementary students in the Arab sector in Israel. Unlike previous studies that either describe questioning patterns or provide experimental interventions, the study described here uniquely integrates action research with conversation analysis (CA), offering both a reflective teaching framework and a rigorous discourse-analytic lens. Using an action research approach combined with CA, the research examined teacher–student interactions in two sixth-grade EFL classes over a 4-month period. Data were collected from recorded classroom lessons and analyzed to identify how different types of questions shape students’ responses and promote critical thinking. The...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos creencias y actitudes de los estudiantes interacción

Resumen:

This study was designed to explore patterns of student perceptions of second language (L2) classroom environments and the relationships between such perceptions and L2 willingness to communicate (WTC). A sample of 845 first-year undergraduate students of English as a foreign language (EFL) participated in the study and reported their perceptions of the L2 classroom environment and their WTC. Using cluster analysis, this study aggregated students’ perceptions of the classroom environment into four clusters: High support, Rapport, Input, and Low support classes. These four clusters of classes differed significantly in the student perceived support of interpersonal relationships and instructional input. A one-way ANOVA further showed that L2 WTC was positively related to student perceptions of interpersonal relationships and...

Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: input aprendizaje informal enseñanza a niños

Resumen:

The present mixed-methods study was an inductive investigation of 8-to-12-year-old English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) children’s English input received beyond the classroom (IBC) in Hong Kong. Individual interviews, with an inductive co-constructive approach, were conducted with the participating children’s parents/guardians (n = 173) to elicit their IBC. The children completed four proficiency tests (listening, reading, speaking, and writing), the scores of which were analysed with their IBC. Medium to large effects were found in correlations between various aspects of IBC and proficiency. Spoken IBC (i.e. exposure to spoken English) generally showed stronger associations with proficiency than written IBC (i.e. exposure to written English) did. Regression analyses demonstrated that both types of IBC were significant predictors,...

Self-esteem is critical to learning, but it is a multifaceted construct with complex effects. The present study investigates domain-specific self-esteem in memory for novel lexis and its interaction with self-reference effects. In total, 144 Saudi learners processed novel English trait adjectives in four conditions (referenced to themselves, an intimate other, a familiar other, or synonyms). They evaluated their self-esteem at the time each item was processed and later recalled the meaning of each item (item memory) and the conditions under which they processed it (source memory). Results revealed that self-esteem had a significant impact on both item and source memory and interacted...
