EFL learners’ versus instructors’ attributions of success and failure factors: A complexity theory perspective
Eman Alzaanin (2026)
Language Teaching Research 30-5
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: creencias y actitudes de los estudiantes creencias y actitudes de los profesores factores afectivos

Resumen:

A limited number of studies have investigated the factors that influence academic success and failure from the perspectives of both students and lecturers of English as a foreign language (EFL). The present study utilizes a complexity theory framework to uncover academic success and failure factors from the perspectives of Saudi EFL learners and lecturers in a public university context. The sample consisted of 64 EFL lecturers and 219 EFL students who completed the success and failure questionnaires adapted from Killen’s study. Descriptive statistics and exploratory factor analysis were used to analyse the data. The results support the complexity theory perspective, where teachers and students are unique systems, each with their own attitudes, beliefs, and influences, shaped through interactions with other systems. Lecturers’ and...

Advising in language learning and the support of learners’ basic psychological needs: A self-determination theory perspective
Scott J. Shelton-Strong (2022)
Language Teaching Research 26-5
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas aprendizaje autónomo motivación

Resumen:

In this article self-determination theory (SDT) is used as a framework to explore ways in which ‘advising in language learning’ (advising) can be understood to support language learners’ basic psychological needs of autonomy, competence and relatedness. These are defined in SDT as nutrients essential for integration, growth, healthy development and well-being (Ryan & Deci, 2017). SDT posits that social learning contexts in which learners’ basic psychological needs are supported facilitate and sustain autonomous functioning, more effective learning and performance, strengthen adaptability, promote awareness, and foster greater wellness (Reeve, 2016; Ryan & Deci, 2017; Vansteenkiste et al., 2019). While a growing body of research provides insight into ways advising promotes and is supportive of autonomous language learning and...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación factores afectivos diferencias individuales

Resumen:

This study leverages positive psychology (PP) to explore the reciprocal relationships among foreign language enjoyment (FLE), ideal L2 self, and grit in English major learners of English as a foreign language (EFL). It further examines the potential for growth mindset to predict these constructs over time. Employing a cross-lagged panel design, the research investigates these relationships among 903 EFL learners in Iran, assessed at two time points. Structural equation modeling (SEM) is utilized to analyse the hypothesized reciprocal and predictive effects. The findings reveal a significant lagged effect of ideal L2 self on both FLE and grit, suggesting that a stronger ideal L2 self at the initial assessment predicts higher levels of FLE and grit at the subsequent time point. Additionally, growth mindset exhibits a significant...

Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario interacción enfoque por tareas

Resumen:

This article aims to uncover how alignment affects second language (L2) vocabulary acquisition by Chinese-speaking learners of English as they interact with various interaction loads (i.e. input text, peers and video). It also explores how tasks with varying interactional intensity in relation to the interaction loads influence the alignment magnitude and vocabulary learning outcomes. To this end, two studies were conducted. In Study 1, three groups of L2 learners were instructed to learn and use the target words while performing paraphrase, summary or continuation task. The results indicated that task-induced interactional intensity had robust effects on alignment magnitude as well as receptive and productive lexical knowledge. In Study 2, three groups of L2 learners were asked to complete a continuation task while interacting with...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación comunicación no verbal interacción

Resumen:

In this study, 118 native speakers of Japanese watched 48 separate video clips in which a teacher provided recasts on phonological or lexical errors to students in Portuguese, a language with which the participants were unfamiliar. In the video clips, six recast characteristics were manipulated: length, segmentation (segmented/whole), prosodic emphasis (stressed/non-stressed), intonation (declarative/interrogative), head movements (nodding/shaking), and gestures (beat/deictic/metaphoric). Participants judged whether or not the teacher had corrected errors and stated the reasons for their decisions. Multiple regressions extracted segmentation and gestures as being significant variables for both phonological and lexical errors. Precisely speaking, recasts were more likely to be accurately perceived as correction when they were provided...

A Sociocultural Perspective for Tracing the Development of Formative Assessment Teacher Cognition: Making a Case for Transformative L2 Teacher Education
Dilara Somuncu, Nuray Alagözlü (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: evaluación feedback/retroalimentación formación de profesores

Resumen:

Grounded in sociocultural theory, this study examines how the formative assessment teacher cognition (FATC) of a pre-service English as a foreign language teacher developed within a teacher education context. Adopting a longitudinal single-case design, the study traces the trajectory of one focal participant, Ela, across a 10-month teaching practicum. Multiple qualitative data sources were triangulated, including interviews, reflective journals, lesson plans, classroom observations, and pre- and post-observation conferences. Data were analyzed through a hybrid approach combining reflexive thematic analysis and sociocultural discourse analysis to capture both the content and interactional dynamics of cognition-in-action. Findings indicate that Ela’s FATC evolved through two key shifts: (a) reconceptualizing corrective feedback from an...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación escritura académica expresión escrita

Resumen:

While studies on student engagement with teacher feedback have proliferated, these investigations have mainly focused on undergraduate students in non-academic writing contexts with limited participants. Consequently, little is known about how second language (L2) postgraduate students engaged with their supervisors’ feedback in academic writing. To fill this important gap, we employed a mixed-methods approach to examine how L2 postgraduates engaged with supervisor feedback affectively, behaviorally, and cognitively in academic writing. In our study, we collected data from multiple sources including questionnaires, students’ first and revised writing samples, supervisors’ feedback, semi-structured interviews, and stimulated recalls. The analyses of quantitative and qualitative data showed that the participants generally engaged with...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: uso de la L1 en el aula enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario comprensión oral

Resumen:

The present study examined the interaction effects between teachers’ choice of language in lexical explanation and second language (L2) learners’ proficiency level on the learning of phrasal verbs and listening comprehension in a meaning-focused listening activity. Undergraduate L2 learners with two different levels of proficiency (intermediate and advanced) were assigned to three different conditions. These conditions included (1) code-switching, in which teachers briefly switched to learners’ first language for vocabulary teaching purposes, (2) L2-only, in which teachers maintained L2 for overall instruction and vocabulary teaching, and (3) control condition, in which learners were not given instruction about target vocabulary. The results revealed that teachers’ instruction about target vocabulary brought about more gains in...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos AICLE/CLIL bilingüismo

Resumen:

Learning a foreign language can be a stressful experience that can provoke anxiety and impede the acquisition of the language in question. In this regard, although there is a lack of studies conducted in foreign language classrooms that have specifically demonstrated relationships between cognitive emotional regulation strategies and anxiety, the apparent correlation between cognitive emotional regulation strategies and anxiety in diverse contexts underscores the necessity for further research to clarify this association and ascertain their applicability to foreign language anxiety. Moreover, it is essential to investigate how the type of education (i.e., bilingual and non-bilingual) affects this relationship. To address these research gaps, multivariate regression models were constructed for several dependent variables with the same...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario comprensión lectora input

Resumen:

This article examines the influence of different reading conditions (i.e. reading only and reading with first language marginal glosses), number of word encounters (one, three, and seven) while reading, and combinations of these two variables on new word retention. This study considered a total of six possible combinations. Six groups of Chinese learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) (n = 240) were randomly selected and each assigned to a condition including 15 target lexical items. Each treatment session lasted for 5 weeks. One delayed test, containing four dimensions of vocabulary knowledge, was intended to measure learners’ retention of unknown words. The delayed test was administered 2 weeks after the experiment and was not disclosed to the learners in advance. The groups whose reading was accompanied by first-language (...
