Task repetition versus task rehearsal: Understanding effects of task-readiness factors and elemental genres on L2 writing task performance

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enfoque por tareas

Resumen:

In the literature on task-based language teaching (TBLT), task repetition and task rehearsal have frequently been used interchangeably. However, this distinction, identified as potentially significant (Ellis, 2019), is noteworthy due to the potential impact of participants’ awareness of future repetitions on second language (L2) task performance. Given the lack of empirical exploration regarding task repetition and task rehearsal distinction in the context of L2 writing, this study investigates how task rehearsal and task repetition affect the narrative and argumentative writing performances of 120 students of English as a second language (ESL) from a U.S. university. They were randomly assigned to four groups. Groups 1 and 3 wrote the narrative text initially, repeated the same task, and then proceeded to write the argumentative text...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Resumen:

Task repetition and task rehearsal are often considered synonymous within the task-based language teaching (TBLT) domain. However, they are conceptually different, emphasizing their pivotal role in shaping participants’ awareness of imminent repetitions and influencing second language (L2) task performance. Despite scarce empirical exploration into differentiating task repetition and task rehearsal in L2 writing across proficiency levels, this study investigates the impact of task repetition on syntactic complexity, accuracy, lexical complexity, and fluency (CALF) in L2 written production. The study also assesses whether distinct task conditions affect CALF development in argumentative writing across proficiency levels. A total of 180 English as a second language (ESL) participants were recruited from six academic writing classes at...

The effects of topic familiarity on emotionality and linguistic complexity in EAP writing

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: expresión escrita

Resumen:

Focusing on the relationship between linguistic, cognitive, socioemotional factors in writing English for academic purposes (EAP), this study investigated whether topic familiarity as an important cognitive factor of task complexity influences different levels of emotionality and linguistic complexity in EAP writing and whether there are relationships between emotionality and linguistic complexity. To do so, 64 international graduate learners enrolled in EAP writing courses participated in the present study. Each wrote on familiar and unfamiliar topics determined via a questionnaire at the onset of the study. Their writings were then measured for textual emotionality and linguistic complexity using automatic assessment tools. Results showed that EAP writings differed systematically in terms of both emotionality and linguistic...

Interactions between task complexity, task repetition, and task motivation in L2 writing

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enfoque por tareas

Resumen:

This study explores the interplay between task repetition and task motivation in second language (L2) writing, specifically focusing on syntactic complexity, accuracy, and lexical complexity (CAL). Aligning with Dörnyei’s call to balance cognitive and affective factors in task-based language teaching (TBLT), the research involved 100 advanced mid-level learners of English as a second language (ESL) aged between 18 and 20 years. Participants completed both simple and complex argumentative writing tasks in a counterbalanced order, with a one-week interval between tasks. A perception questionnaire was administered immediately after each task performance to validate cognitive task complexity manipulations. Subsequently, participants repeated the same tasks with the same time interval, complemented by the completion of a task motivation...

Task sequencing and L2 writing development: Exploring the SSARC model of pedagogic task sequencing

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enfoque por tareas

Resumen:

To test the predictive power of the SSARC (stabilize, simplify, automatize, reconstruct, and complexify) model of pedagogic task sequencing in second language (L2) writing development, the present study explores the performance of written decision-making tasks with varied levels of cognitive complexity in a simple-to-complex sequence in comparison to complex-to-simple and individual task performance sequences over time. The participants, 100 advanced-mid learners of English as a second language (ESL), who were divided into three groups completed writing tasks either (1) in a simple-to-complex sequence, (2) in a complex-to-simple sequence, or (3) at one level of complexity (i.e. simple, medium, or complex task versions). Their written production was analysed for syntactic complexity, accuracy, lexical complexity, and fluency (CALF)....

Engagement with written corrective feedback: Examination of feedback types and think-aloud protocol as pedagogical interventions
Mahmoud Abdi Tabari, Masatoshi Sato, Yizhou Wang (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación

Resumen:

This study examined the combined effects of written corrective feedback (WCF) and think-aloud protocols (TAPs) as two types of pedagogical intervention for improving the revision quality of second language (L2) writing. With a quasi-experimental design, it explored whether TAPs trigger deeper processing of WCF under two WCF-type conditions: direct or indirect WCF. Participants were 80 high-intermediate learners of English as a second language (ESL) at a US university who were divided into (1) direct WCF+TAPs; (2) direct WCF-only; (3) indirect WCF+TAPs; and (4) indirect WCF-only. The impacts of the interventions were gauged by changes in seven subsystems of complexity–accuracy–lexis (CAL) between the first and final drafts of narrative essays. Results showed differential impacts of the four conditions depending on the linguistic...

The effects of task complexity and task repetition on sense-aware frequency-based lexical sophistication indices in L2 writing
Mahmoud Abdi Tabari, Xiaofei Lu, Renfen Hu (2025)
Language Teaching Research

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enfoque por tareas

Resumen:

Research on task-based second-language (L2) writing has largely focused on investigating how task complexity (TC) affects various aspects of written production. However, this body of research has rarely examined the effect of task repetition, either on its own or in interaction with TC. Additionally, studies have predominantly used traditional frequency-based measures of lexical sophistication, without incorporating more nuanced, sense-aware indices that could offer a deeper understanding of linguistic complexity. This study aims to explore and compare the impact of TC, task repetition, and their interaction on lexical sophistication in L2 writing, using both traditional and sense-aware frequency-based indices. Ninety-six participants completed two argumentative essays on simple and complex tasks in counterbalanced order, twice over...
