Genre instruction, textual borrowing, and foreign language writing: Graduate teaching assistant perspectives and practices
Heather Willis Allen, Kate Paesani (2022)
Language Teaching Research 26-4
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas expresión escrita géneros textuales

Resumen:

Although writing plays a significant role in communication, 21st century literacies and academic foreign language learning, little research has investigated approaches to and instructional practices of writing in foreign language (FL) contexts. To address this gap, the current study explores how postsecondary FL teachers conceptualize writing instruction and apply their conceptual knowledge in the classroom. Using a sociocultural theory perspective, this qualitative study focuses on genre-based writing instruction and the teaching of textual borrowing among three graduate teaching assistants in a lower-level French as a FL course. Findings, based on analysis of classroom observations, teaching materials, and interviews, demonstrate that participants’ conceptualizations and implementation of textual borrowing were emergent, variable,...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación expresión escrita aprendizaje colaborativo

Resumen:

This study investigates how learner language proficiency and peer familiarity interact to shape English as a Foreign Language students’ engagement with peer feedback, drawing on Fredricks et al.’s tripartite model of engagement (affective, cognitive, behavioral), self-determination theory, and social interdependence theory to conceptualize engagement as a socially mediated and motivationally dynamic process. To interpret engagement variation, the study incorporates self-determination theory and social interdependence theory, conceptualizing engagement as socially mediated and motivationally dynamic. Three research questions examine how language proficiency influences engagement, peer familiarity affects engagement across feedback roles, and the two variables interact, especially for low-proficiency learners. A 2 × 2 factorial mixed-...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas aprendizaje basado en proyectos telecolaboración e intercambios virtuales

Resumen:

This quasi-experimental study reports on the outcomes of a video-synchronous learning program in which an element of project-based foreign language learning was integrated. The project chosen was to cooperatively create a homepage. American students learning Japanese in the United States and Japanese students learning English in Japan made pairs and communicated in both their native and target languages via Skype to complete the project. The goals of this educational program were to increase intrinsic motivation in learners and improve their target language oral abilities, and identify challenges and problems with implementation. The program was conducted during the spring semester in 2017 and evaluated both quantitatively (via pre- and posttests) and qualitatively (via surveys and reflection papers). The results show that both groups...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enfoque por tareas práctica docente creencias y actitudes de los profesores

Resumen:

This qualitative study examined factors mediating a novice’s and an experienced English as a foreign language (EFL) teacher’s different adherence to critical components based on a tentative framework of fidelity of implementation (FoI) for task-based language teaching (TBLT). The 18-week study involved two teachers and 109 students at a Chinese University. Qualitative findings suggested that, compared with the experienced teacher, the novice teacher implemented with lower fidelity to three pedagogical principles, encouraging inductive (“chunk”) learning, focusing on form and providing negative feedback. Elicited data from observation logs and interviews indicated that factors influencing the teachers’ variation entailed their beliefs, teaching experience, and teacher–student relationship. Implications for upskilling and supporting...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos motivación diferencias individuales

Resumen:

Texto completo

While language anxiety is known to be a strong predictor of the second language (L2) achievement for decades, there has been a relative lack of empirical attention to establishing which one – anxiety or achievement – influences the other. The present study, based on a cross-lagged panel analysis, examined the causal relationships between language anxiety and L2 achievement, each of which was measured at three times points across 17 weeks. The results supported the directional relationship from L2 achievement at Time 2 to language anxiety at Time 3 while the opposite directional relationship from language anxiety at Time 2 to L2 achievement at Time 3 was not supported. Thus, our results suggest...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: tecnología educativa realidad virtual aula invertida/flipped learning

Resumen:

Integrating improved technologies such as augmented reality (AR) within flipped classes has gained popularity among scholars. This study was carried out to examine the effect of AR-based instruction on English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ speaking skills in online flipped and face-to-face classes. To this end, out of 65 students who had enrolled in the designated language program, 50 students were selected by the researcher based on their performance on the Cambridge English Placement test, and the selected participants were randomly assigned into the face-to-face or online flipped groups. For the treatment, both groups received the same AR application, teaching material, and teaching strategies. The only difference between the two groups was the learning context. After the treatment sessions, both the online flipped and face...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación uso de la L1 en el aula expresión escrita

Resumen:

This study reports on part of a larger research project that investigates the role of students’ first language in learning English as a foreign language (EFL) in the context of Japanese higher education. Despite the prevalent use of peer review in EFL writing classes, students’ use of different languages and the effects of English proficiencies on collaborative interaction as mediated in written peer feedback remain underresearched. To add to the rather sparse literature, this study comparatively analysed peer feedback provided by high- and low-proficiency Japanese EFL students and conducted stimulated recall interviews to determine the factors affecting their language choices. The text analysis presented a stark contrast in students’ language choices stemming mainly from a difference in the type of feedback provided by each group: ‘...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación factores afectivos educación primaria y secundaria

Resumen:

Texto completo

This study drew on bioecological systems theory to investigate factors influencing demotivation and remotivation among Chinese secondary school EFL learners. Adopting a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, 129 Grade-12 students were asked to create motivational change graphs to depict their English learning trajectories during their 12-year pre-tertiary education. Analysis of the graphs revealed two distinct groups: those who remained demotivated and those who experienced remotivation. To explore underlying factors, narrative frames and follow-up interviews were conducted with selected participants. Quantitative results indicated two critical periods of motivational change: Grade 8, when...

The interplay of task repetition and task rehearsal in L2 written production across varied proficiency levels
Mahmoud Abdi Tabari, Seyyed Ehsan Golparvar (2024)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enfoque por tareas expresión escrita escritura académica

Resumen:

Task repetition and task rehearsal are often considered synonymous within the task-based language teaching (TBLT) domain. However, they are conceptually different, emphasizing their pivotal role in shaping participants’ awareness of imminent repetitions and influencing second language (L2) task performance. Despite scarce empirical exploration into differentiating task repetition and task rehearsal in L2 writing across proficiency levels, this study investigates the impact of task repetition on syntactic complexity, accuracy, lexical complexity, and fluency (CALF) in L2 written production. The study also assesses whether distinct task conditions affect CALF development in argumentative writing across proficiency levels. A total of 180 English as a second language (ESL) participants were recruited from six academic writing classes at...

Understanding knowledge, participation and learning in L2 collaborative writing: A metacognitive theory perspective
Wenting Chen, Susanna Hapgood (2021)
Language Teaching Research 25-2
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: aprendizaje colaborativo expresión escrita metacognición

Resumen:

Although research about group interactions during second or foreign language (L2 or EFL) collaborative writing has proliferated in the last few decades, little is known about the role of psychological factors, like learners’ knowledge about collaborative writing, in affecting students’ patterns of interaction and learning in collaborative writing. Informed by metacognitive theory, this study used a mixed-method approach to investigate whether and how L2 students’ knowledge about collaborative writing affected their participation (patterns of interaction) and learning (languaging opportunities) during the collaborative writing process. Two parallel classes (one with explicit collaborative writing knowledge taught; one without) were compared and multiple sources of data (interviews, reflective journals, pair talk) were analysed for...
