Negative feedback and positive evidence in task-based interaction: differential effects on L2 development
Noriko Iwashita (2003)
Studies in Second Language Acquisition
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación

Resumen:

This study examines the role of task-based conversation in second language (L2) grammatical development, focusing on the short-term effects of both negative feedback and positive evidence on the acquisition of two Japanese structures. The data are drawn from 55 L2 learners of Japanese at a beginning level of proficiency in an Australian tertiary institution. Five different types of interactional moves made by native speaker interlocutors during task-based interaction were identified, by way of which learners received implicit negative feedback and positive evidence about the two target structures. The relative frequency of each interactional move type was calculated, and associated changes in the learners’ performance on immediate and delayed posttests were examined. It was found that, although native speaker interactional moves...

Chatbots as a Field of Inquiry in CALL
Jaeho Jeon, Seongyong Lee (2025)
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: capítulo

Metodología: revisión bibliográfica

Temas: chatbots

Resumen:

This entry provides a concise overview of the research conducted on chatbots in language teaching and learning, and aims to introduce chatbots as a distinct field within computer-assisted language learning (CALL). Much of the existing research focuses solely on chatbots' functions as conversational software, lacking deep reflection and theorization. In response to the need for a theoretical foundation, the authors review previous studies to highlight three considerations: the unique characteristics of chatbots that distinguish them from human interlocutors; research frameworks incorporating cognitive, sociocultural, and critical approaches; and areas in language education that intersect with chatbot technology.

The effects of learning contexts on morphosyntactic and lexical development
Joseph Collentine (2004)
Studies in Second Language Acquisition

Input enhancement in instructed SLA: theoretical bases
Michael Sharwood Smith (1993)
Studies in Second Language Acquisition
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: trabajo teórico

Temas: input

Resumen:

The concept of input to the language learner is examined with reference to some current theorizing about language processing and the idea of modular systems of knowledge. The question of what this can tell us about the actions taken by teachers and textbook writers is addressed specifically with regard to manipulating, or “enhancing,” the input ideally so that it will affect learner knowledge and thereby learner behavior. The logic of the argumentation is that, in exposing the learner to the second language, we are engaging a whole battery of different processing mechanisms. Input enhancement research and the conclusions drawn from it have to be set within the context of a modular view of language and language learning.

Chatbots for language learning—Are they really useful? A systematic review of chatbot-supported language learning
Weijiao Huang, Khe Foon Hew, Luke K. Fryer (2022)
Journal of Computer Assisted Learning
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: revisión bibliográfica

Temas: inteligencia artificial

Resumen:

The use of chatbots as learning assistants is receiving increasing attention in language learning due to their ability to converse with students using natural language. Previous reviews mainly focused on only one or two narrow aspects of chatbot use in language learning. This review goes beyond merely reporting the specific types of chatbot employed in past empirical studies and examines the usefulness of chatbots in language learning, including first language learning, second language learning, and foreign language learning. We conducted a systematic search and identified 25 empirical studies, using the inductive grounded approach to identify the technological and pedagogical affordances and the challenges of using chatbots, and Garrison's social presence framework to analyze the social affordances.

The Modern Language Journal
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Identifying the impact of negative feedback and learners’ responses on ESL question development
Kim McDonough (2005)
Studies in Second Language Acquisition
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación

Resumen:

Swain’s (1985, 1995, 2000) output hypothesis states that language production is facilitative of second language (L2) learning. An important component of the output hypothesis involves pushing learners to produce appropriate, accurate, and complex language (Swain, 1993), which may occur when interlocutors provide learners with negative feedback. When learners modify their previous utterances in response to negative feedback, learning opportunities are created by both the provision of negative feedback and the production of modified output. Consequently, it is difficult to determine how these interactional features—alone or in combination—positively impact L2 development. The current study examines the impact of negative feedback and learners’ responses on English as a second language (ESL) question development, which is operationalized...

A systematic review on cross-culture, humor and empathy dimensions in conversational chatbots: the case of second language acquisition
Chunpeng Zhai, Santoso Wibowo (2022)
Heliyon
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: revisión bibliográfica

Temas: inteligencia artificial

Resumen:

Texto completo

This study reviews the existing studies on AI second language (L2) chatbots to investigate the development of empathetic strategies for enhancing learners' learning outcomes. Prior studies from 2012 to 2022 in Web of Science, ProQuest, IEEE and ScienceDirect were collected and analyzed. The study found that three dimensions —cultural, empathetic and humorous— have a positive influence on the application of AI L2 chatbots. Several recommendations are made, including integrating cross-cultural empathetic responses in conversational L2 chatbots, identifying how learners perceive and react to the learning content, and investigating the effects of cross-culture humor on learners' language...

Context, contact, and cognition in oral fluency acquisition: learning Spanish in at home and study abroad contexts
Norman Segalowitz, Barbara Freed (2004)
Studies in Second Language Acquisition

Does second language instruction make a difference? A review of research
Michael H. Long (1983)
TESOL Quarterly
