One situation doesn’t fit all: Variability and stability of state willingness to communicate in a Chinese College English classroom
Jiayi Zhang, Nadin Beckmann, Jens F. Beckmann (2022)
Language Teaching Research 26-3
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos motivación interacción

Resumen:

Willingness to communicate (WTC) used to be studied as a relatively stable, trait-like predisposition; however, recently attention has shifted to the more dynamic, state-like components of WTC. This research investigates variability and stability in state WTC, particularly focusing on within-person variability, which may lead to stable between-person differences, and situational antecedents that can either promote or hinder state WTC in L2 classrooms. To investigate whether, how and why state WTC varies over time, this study used a high-density repeated measurement design and a group of Chinese university students to describe fluctuations in state WTC in English classrooms over one semester. Data related to state WTC and selected situational antecedents were collected through a self-report questionnaire and statistically analysed. It...

The interplay of glossing with text difficulty and comprehension levels
Seyede Faezeh Hosseini Alast, Sasan Baleghizadeh (2024)
Language Teaching Research 28-3
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: comprensión lectora vocabulario uso de la L1 en el aula

Resumen:

The aim of this experiment was to investigate how glossing influences second language (L2)reading comprehension in relation to text difficulty and the two local and global meaning representations. Fifty-eight undergraduate students were asked to read three easy, moderate, and difficult texts and, following each passage, answer twenty comprehension questions targeting local and global concepts in one of the two first-language-glossed and unglossed conditions. Half of the participants in each group were supposed to think aloud while reading. The results revealed a significant difference between the performance of glossed and unglossed groups on comprehension of local concepts in all three difficulty levels. However, the impact of glossing on comprehension of global concepts was significantly influenced by text difficulty. The...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación creencias y actitudes de los estudiantes factores afectivos

Resumen:

Engaging students in the second language (L2) classroom is a critical task that requires a clear understanding of the multilayered characteristics of the L2 classroom and the motivational mechanisms through which these characteristics influence student engagement. This study contributes to the L2 engagement literature in this regard by examining the relationship among students’ expectancy and task value belief, their perception of the three L2 classroom conditions, namely classroom structure, teaching relevance, and peer support, and their engagement in an instructed L2 learning setting. Structural equation modelling was employed to analyse self-report data collected from 413 first year students of English as a foreign language (EFL) in Vietnam. Results suggest that teaching relevance and peer support significantly predicted students...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario enseñanza a niños educación infantil

Resumen:

This study investigates the effectiveness of multisensory learning (MSL) compared to traditional (TRD) teaching methods in enhancing English vocabulary acquisition among English as a foreign language (EFL) kindergarten-aged learners in Amman, Jordan. A total of 49 children were divided equally into two groups: one receiving traditional instruction and the other exposed to multisensory techniques, including visual aids, auditory input, specific activities, and experiences. Pre- and post-tests were used to assess vocabulary retrieval through two tasks. Descriptive statistics revealed that the MSL group outperformed the TRD group in both tasks, with higher mean scores and reduced variability, indicating more consistent learning outcomes. An independent sample t -test confirmed that these differences were statistically significant. The...

Temas: formación de profesores expresión escrita creencias y actitudes de los profesores

Resumen:

Research on second language (L2) writing tends to focus much more on student learning of writing than teachers’ teaching and learning of the teaching of writing. While a few studies have considered the influence of formal education on teachers’ L2 writing instruction, such as by examining the changes in teacher beliefs and practices across one semester (Lee, 2010), little is known about the long-term impact (e.g., 2 or 3 years) of such training on the professional development of L2 writing teachers. The present study adopted a multiple-case study approach to examine the long-term effects of a course on teaching L2 writing on five teachers of writing who taught writing in different contexts (primary school, secondary school, private language training center, and university) in the Chinese EFL context and how the teachers may apply the...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos inclusión y equidad profesorado

Resumen:

Family context has been found to influence achievement emotions, but the factors that might moderate this association remain relatively unexplored. To address this gap, this research examined the moderation of teacher–student relationships (TSR) in the link between family socioeconomic status (SES) and emotions in foreign language (FL) learning drawing on control-value theory of achievement emotions and attachment theory. The research involved 4,155 eighth-grade students from China, who completed scales reporting their SES, FL enjoyment, FL anxiety, and FL burnout. The moderating effect model demonstrated that TSR played a moderating role in the relationship between SES and negative emotions in FL learning such as anxiety and burnout. However, no significant moderation was observed between SES and FL enjoyment. Specifically, a warm...

Resumen:

Texto completo

This study, a follow-up to the research reported by Erlam, investigated K-12 content teachers’ ability to design tasks for content instruction in U.S. schools. Thirty-nine K-12 teachers who were enrolled in an English as a second language (ESL) teaching methods course participated in the study and each designed two language learning tasks. Two researchers rated the tasks following Ellis and Shintani’s four task criteria, as in Erlam. The study addressed the questions: (1) How successful are content teachers in designing tasks that satisfy Ellis and Shintani’s criteria? (2) Which of the criteria do teachers find easiest and most difficult to satisfy? and (3) Do the teachers improve in meeting the...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación factores afectivos interacción

Resumen:

Despite the wealth of studies on corrective feedback (CF) and its relationship with individual learner factors, little is known about how foreign language (FL) anxiety moderates the effectiveness of recasts during mobile-mediated audio interactions. The present study thus examined the association between learners’ FL anxiety, the effectiveness of recasts, and learners’ responses to recasts during synchronous mobile-mediated interactions via audio call. Two intact classes of EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners were assigned into a control group and an experimental condition. After taking pre-tests, the participants of the experimental condition participated in four sessions of mobile-mediated oral interaction with an interlocutor via WhatsApp and received recasts for their definite and indefinite article errors. The...

Resumen:

This study examines the design, implementation, and outcomes of a mobile-assisted Korean language (MAKL) blended course that aims to enhance learning of Korean as a foreign language (KFL) at university level. This course, which is grounded in the attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction (ARCS) motivational framework and a triarchic model of cognition, emotion, and language performance, integrates multimedia resources, LINE-based scaffolding, and culturally immersive peer interactions with the goal of promoting engagement and self-regulated learning. The findings of this research reveal that the participating students achieved significant linguistic growth, improved their emotional resilience, and developed adaptive strategies that enabled them to overcome linguistic, cognitive-affective, technical, and self-regulatory...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: comprensión lectora materiales didácticos creación de materiales

Resumen:

This study explores the effectiveness of modified Kazakh literary texts in teaching Kazakhs as foreign languages. Using a quasi-experimental design, 36 university students were divided into two groups: teacher-modified texts were provided to the experimental group and the control group used the original versions. The experimental group showed markedly greater improvements in reading speed and test results. A quarter of the experimental group participants reported experiencing greater motivation toward reading and forming daily reading habits, which was not observed in the control group. The graded readers were rated as having suitable difficulty by 33.3% of the experimental group, whereas 38.9% of the control group found the original text too difficult. The results indicate that there is a need for a uniform process to create graded...
