Role-based interaction analysis for FLL: A sociocognitive UBL perspective
Hao-Zhang Xiao (2025)
Language Teaching Research 29-2
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: interacción pragmática enseñanza/aprendizaje de la gramática

Resumen:

This article discusses, from a sociocognitive perspective, the integration of usage-based linguistics (UBL) models in favor of conversation analysis (CA) for second language acquisition (SLA). On this basis, it presents a pedagogical approach, viz. role-based interaction analysis (RBIA) for foreign language learning (FLL), by scaffolding, tracking and measuring learners’ behaviors of learning spoken grammatical and pragmatic features in intertextual affordances. Two groups were designated randomly as the experimental group (n = 30) and the comparison group (n = 32) to examine their uptake of the targeted features via explicit and implicit RBIA (i.e. two different ways of learning/processing in role-based interaction) respectively. Results showed: (1) there were significant differences between the two groups in the learning of...

Boosting engagement through gamified cooperative teaching: a mixed-methods study in middle school EFL
Tianli Zhou, Lianguo Wu (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas gamificación aprendizaje colaborativo

Resumen:

Addressing the pervasive issue of low engagement in Chinese junior high school English classrooms, this study evaluates the efficacy of gamified cooperative teaching (GCT) using a mixed-methods design. By integrating surveys, pre- and postintervention vocabulary tests, systematic classroom observations, and semi-structured interviews, the research examines the behavioral and cognitive shifts of a cohort of seventh-grade English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) learners. Findings indicate that the implementation of GCT was associated with a notable increase in active classroom participation and improved vocabulary retention compared with traditional instructional methods. Qualitative data from interviews and observations further suggest that the gamified collaborative framework effectively fostered student motivation and enhanced classroom...

From theory to practice: Understanding the long-term impact of an L2 writing education course on writing teachers
Shulin Yu, Yiran Zhang, Chunhong Liu (2025)
Language Teaching Research 29-6

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: formación de profesores expresión escrita creencias y actitudes de los profesores

Resumen:

Research on second language (L2) writing tends to focus much more on student learning of writing than teachers’ teaching and learning of the teaching of writing. While a few studies have considered the influence of formal education on teachers’ L2 writing instruction, such as by examining the changes in teacher beliefs and practices across one semester (Lee, 2010), little is known about the long-term impact (e.g., 2 or 3 years) of such training on the professional development of L2 writing teachers. The present study adopted a multiple-case study approach to examine the long-term effects of a course on teaching L2 writing on five teachers of writing who taught writing in different contexts (primary school, secondary school, private language training center, and university) in the Chinese EFL context and how the teachers may apply the...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: expresión escrita input comprensión lectora

Resumen:

Previous studies demonstrated that the continuation task has great language learning potential and that various task-related factors may affect the extent to which the potential can be exploited (e.g. Wang & Wang, 2015). This study investigates the effect of one understudied factor, the linguistic complexity of the input text, on English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ alignment, writing fluency, and writing accuracy in the continuation task. Two comparable groups of Chinese undergraduate EFL learners read and continued a simplified and unsimplified version of the same incomplete story whose linguistic complexity matched and exceeded their production ability, respectively. Compared to the unsimplified version, the simplified version resulted in more automatic alignment and greater improvement in writing fluency and accuracy...

Family socioeconomic status and foreign language emotions: Moderation of teacher–student relationships
Lihong Ma, Leifeng Xiao, Ning Liu (2026)
Language Teaching Research 30-6
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos inclusión y equidad profesorado

Resumen:

Family context has been found to influence achievement emotions, but the factors that might moderate this association remain relatively unexplored. To address this gap, this research examined the moderation of teacher–student relationships (TSR) in the link between family socioeconomic status (SES) and emotions in foreign language (FL) learning drawing on control-value theory of achievement emotions and attachment theory. The research involved 4,155 eighth-grade students from China, who completed scales reporting their SES, FL enjoyment, FL anxiety, and FL burnout. The moderating effect model demonstrated that TSR played a moderating role in the relationship between SES and negative emotions in FL learning such as anxiety and burnout. However, no significant moderation was observed between SES and FL enjoyment. Specifically, a warm...

Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: diferencias individuales motivación aprendizaje autónomo

Resumen:

Texto completo

Evidence from recent studies has shown that sustained perseverance and passion for long-term goals in the domain of second language (L2) learning – a personality trait called L2 grit – is associated with various aspects of language learning, including positive psychological attributes (e.g. motivation, beliefs, and emotions), actions (e.g. learning efforts and strategy use), and achievement (e.g. course and task performance). Meanwhile, relatively little has been written about the mechanism through which such relationships emerge. Expanding upon L2 grit’s association with self-regulated learning (SRL) behaviors and SRL-related psychological variables, this study explores the development of L2...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas literatura creencias y actitudes de los estudiantes

Resumen:

Set against the backcloth of increasing recognition and attention to literature in foreign language education (FLE) globally, this article reports part of a large-scale study of 1,190 secondary-level learners’ views of the benefits of literature, as instantiated by short stories (ShS) and poems and songs (PS) in their English-as-a-foreign-language learning. An inventory of 27 items (13 language-related and 14 non-language-related) was compiled with reference to previous studies and curricular documents. The analyses compared the two modules through independent t-tests, as well as including an exploratory factor analysis to examine latent factors. Findings reveal a three factor structure and a slightly positive view of the benefits of literature. ShS were perceived to be generally more beneficial than PS, especially in the domains of...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: evaluación formación de profesores teoría sociocultural

Resumen:

Texto completo

Guided by sociocultural theory, this single-case narrative inquiry views language assessment literacy development as a process of language assessment concept formation and examines how a teacher’s language assessment concepts were formed, what sociocultural elements mediated those concept formations, and how the focal teacher emotionally experienced those concept formations. To fulfill these aims, approximately 15 hours of audio and video data were collected from a novice Vietnamese teacher of English as a foreign language via interviews, classroom observations, and verbal reports. The data were transformed into narrative vignettes which were then subject to directed content analysis guided by...

The Production Effect in Second Language Verb–Noun Idiom Learning: Evidence From Pure-List Designs and Transfer-Appropriate Processing
Ryotaro Hashizaki (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: expresiones idiomáticas enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario fraseología

Resumen:

Learners of a second language often vocalize newly learned items, and previous studies have shown that this practice facilitates the learning of single words and multiword expressions. However, these effects have been demonstrated only in mixed-list designs, where a single list of items is learned using multiple learning methods, and have not been tested in pure-list designs, where each list is learned with one consistent method. Moreover, prior research has relied almost exclusively on written recognition tests, leaving spoken-modality tests and recall measures largely unexamined. This study employed a within-participant, pure-list design in which each list was associated with a single learning condition, and each participant studied a total of four lists. The participants were 68 Japanese learners of English. Participants learned 64...

Parlez-vous francais? Effects of structure-based versus dynamic-usage-based approaches on oral proficiency

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enfoques y métodos expresión oral enseñanza/aprendizaje de la gramática

Resumen:

Texto completo

We investigated the effectiveness of two different teaching methods based on two different theoretical views of how languages are learned in oral proficiency after three years of L2 French instruction. The first method is commonly used in the Netherlands and is in line with structure-based (SB) principles, viewing language as a set of grammar rules that need to be explained to achieve accuracy, usually in the L1. The second method aligns with dynamic-usage-based (DUB) principles in that language is viewed as a set of conventionalized routines that are learned through frequent exposure and the L2 is spoken exclusively in class. In a large study (Rousse-Malpat et al., 2019), the DUB method proved...
