Emotional intelligence and second/foreign language achievement: A meta-analytic review
Yabing Wang, Fangsong Liu (2026)
Language Teaching Research 30-1
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: revisión bibliográfica

Temas: factores afectivos adquisición de segundas lenguas diferencias individuales

Resumen:

A growing body of literature examined the role of emotional intelligence (EI) in second/foreign language learning (L2) achievement. Though positive relationships have been reported, negative or non-significant relationships were also found. To date no study has quantitatively synthesized the overall effect size between EI and L2 achievement or the potential moderators influencing their relationship. The current meta-analysis fills this research gap by examining 39 independent studies with a cumulative sample size of 6,571 participants. Moderation analyses showed that the effect was stronger for female, collectivistic culture, and final grades as language measures (as opposed to standardized tests) but not influenced by educational level, major, specificity of L2 achievement, skills of language learning or publication year. Reasons for...

Applying control-value theory for examining multiple emotions in L2 classrooms: Validating the Achievement Emotions Questionnaire – Second Language Learning

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos adquisición de segundas lenguas motivación

Resumen:

This study used Pekrun’s control-value theory (CVT) as a framework to validate the Achievement Emotion Questionnaire – Second Language Learning (AEQ-L2L) for assessing eight student emotions in second language (L2) learning. We tested and validated the instrument in two samples using three waves of data, with a total number of 1,021 Chinese university students. Item and scale statistics indicate the AEQ-L2L is reliable. Moreover, single- and multi-group confirmatory factor analysis supported the hierarchical four-factor component structure of L2 emotions in and across the two student groups. Furthermore, multi-model comparison indicated that language emotions are best represented by considering both the distinctiveness of the eight examined emotions and their component structure. Finally, latent correlation analysis demonstrated the...

Pre-service language teachers' perceptions of sustainability and its implementation in language teaching

Resumen:

Texto completo

In both the school environment and teacher education, sustainable development is usually linked to the natural and social sciences and is rarely incorporated into language education or encouraged as part of language teacher education. As more research is needed on the practical implementation of sustainable development in language teaching and language teacher education, this study elucidates Finnish pre-service language teachers' perceptions of sustainability dimensions (i.e. ecological, economic, social, and cultural) and their role in language teaching. We used a questionnaire comprising open-ended and Likert-scale questions to examine pre-service language teachers' perceptions of and attitudes...

Comparing different L3s and factors that affect motivation to learn LOTEs
Hsuan-Yau Lai (2026)
Language Teaching Research 30-4
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación adquisición de segundas lenguas español como L3

Resumen:

In the field of L2 (second language) learning motivation, most studies have focused on English since it is one of the most important international languages in the world, while few have explored students' motivation to learn languages other than English (LOTEs) or an L3. The literature on L2 motivation raises the issue of the need to compare the similarities and differences between learning a second language (L2) and a second foreign languages (or L3). English departments at Taiwanese universities require students to begin studying an L3 in their second or third years of study. However, the motivations for these students to learn L3s remain underexplored. This study addresses this gap in the literature. A standardized questionnaire was completed by 150 students in technological universities in Taiwan. The findings reveal five new...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: expresión escrita expresión oral educación primaria y secundaria

Resumen:

Debate pedagogy may hold great potential for improving second language (L2) writing skills. This study investigates this potential by examining the effects of a debate intervention on the quality of argumentative essays of Dutch secondary school students. The intervention consisted of a number of speaking and writing activities, including case-writing and note-taking. The study, which employed a pretest–posttest–delayed-posttest design with a control group, involved 135 students from eight classes at three secondary schools in the Netherlands. To measure the effects of the intervention, we analysed argumentative essays composed by the students on three occasions (pretest, posttest, and delayed posttest). The students’ essays were analysed using a range of measures for fluency, syntactic and lexical complexity, accuracy, and cohesion,...

The effects of task type and word processing on incidental vocabulary learning: an eye-tracking extension of Hill and Laufer (2003)

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario vocabulario cognición y procesamiento

Resumen:

Texto completo

While research suggests that vocabulary learning through task completion is more effective than direct instruction, the underlying cause of this advantage—whether task involvement load (IL) or time spent on tasks—remains unclear. Extending the work of Hill and Laufer (2003, International Review of Applied Linguistics in Language Teaching, 41, 87–106), this study examines the effects of IL and employs eye-tracking to investigate how time spent on tasks, target words, and context, as well as regressions to targets, influence incidental vocabulary acquisition. Seventy-three second-language (...

Can ChatGPT score ESL writing? A correlation analysis between teacher and GenAI scores

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: inteligencia artificial evaluación ChatGPT

Resumen:

Large language models (LLMs) have recently gained attention in automated writing evaluation (AWE) due to their flexibility, ease of use, and free accessibility. However, most existing studies have relied on standardized rubrics and detailed scoring guidelines to guide model outputs. Recent evidence suggests that LLMs can adapt their scoring behavior through example-based calibration. Building on this insight, the present study examines whether ChatGPT-4o can mirror individual instructors’ evaluative tendencies. Data consisted of 100 previously graded final exam writing samples from Saudi students of English as a second language (ESL), provided by five instructors at a Saudi university’s Bachelor of Arts program. GPT (generative pre-trained transformer) was calibrated using instructor-graded writing samples to enhance its alignment...

Navigating the remote language classroom: Exploring teacher adaptation and student outcomes during COVID-19

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza en línea e híbrida creencias y actitudes de los profesores profesorado

Resumen:

Texto completo

Almost since the onset of emergency remote teaching due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the spring of 2020, studies examined how teachers and students adjusted to the change, including in language courses. Some of this research has explored language teachers’ self-efficacy and confidence in teaching remotely, and to a lesser extent how student language learning has been affected; most studies have not differentiated among languages taught or between different student age groups. Through a survey of 173 PK–16 language instructors in the United States who switched from face-to-face classroom teaching to remote...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enfoque por tareas motivación factores afectivos

Resumen:

Texto completo

This study investigated the impact of task type and proficiency level on second language learners’ task engagement, combing the discourse analytic method with the idiodynamic method. Sixty undergraduate English-as-a-foreign-language learners in China were divided into high- and low-proficiency groups based on their scores on the Oxford Placement Test. The learners were randomly paired with a partner who shared the same proficiency level and completed a narrative task and a decision-making task. Their spoken discourse of task performance was analyzed to explore behavioral, cognitive, and social engagement....

Longitudinal study of Spanish vowel acquisition by Australian students

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: pronunciación fonética Australia

Resumen:

Texto completo

A growing body of research, especially on second language (L2) English, has shown the positive effects of explicit pronunciation teaching. However, some beliefs which prevent explicit pronunciation teaching still remain, notably, the belief that regular speaking during class time is enough to improve pronunciation outcomes. This article analyses the evolution of L2 Spanish vowels in four students at an Australian university. An analysis of 1,387...
