(L2) grit, emotions, and motivated learning behavior: The case of English majors in Hungary
Kata Csizér, Mirosล‚aw Pawlak, Ágnes Albert (2024)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: diferencias individuales factores afectivos motivación

Resumen:

Although the number of studies into grit in second/foreign language (L2) learning is on the rise, available empirical evidence is still scant, particularly in relation to links between the two facets of (L2) grit (i.e. perseverance and interest), positive (i.e. enjoyment, curiosity) and negative (i.e. in-class and after-class boredom, anxiety) emotions as well as motivation. In addition, most research has been quantitative in nature and has mainly targeted Asian contexts. In order to fill these gaps, a mixed-methods study was undertaken among English majors and English student teachers in Hungary. It aimed to: (1) characterize the participants in terms of the variables under investigation, (2) identify their profiles in relation to general grit and L2 grit, and (3) determine the differences between the identified clusters with respect...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enfoque por tareas interacción educación primaria y secundaria

Resumen:

This study assesses a range of task-based interaction (i.e. structured vs. unstructured tasks) between lower-English-proficiency middle school English as a foreign language (EFL) learners in a task-based learning (TBL) class employing conversation analytic methodology. From the video data, which allowed for an emic analysis of the students’ vocal and non-vocal actions when engaging in the different task types, it was found that in both the structured and unstructured task interactions, because the students were mainly focused on task completion, there were frequent minimal turns and sequences. A deviant case analysis revealed that the participants prioritized task completion as the focus of activities even when engaging in social talk by evoking various types of roles (e.g. students, friends). The study proposes several pedagogical...

Foreign language teaching anxiety between pre-service and in-service English teachers: A psychological network analysis
Guofang Zeng (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos profesorado formación de profesores

Resumen:

Foreign language teaching anxiety (FLTA) was reconceptualized as a multidimensional construct, involving both linguistic, target language-related anxiety and non-linguistic, general teaching anxiety. However, the interaction of these two types of anxieties, and the extent to which that interaction differs between pre-service and in-service teachers, remains untapped. To address this gap, this study surveyed 170 pre-service and 186 in-service English teachers. Psychological network analysis was used to visualize intricate interrelationships among linguistic and non-linguistic FLTA dimensions within each group. Results showed that linguistic and non-linguistic dimensions were intricately interconnected within both teacher groups. Notably, self-perception of language proficiency and lack of student interest emerged as the most central...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario storytelling/narración enseñanza a niños

Resumen:

The increasing number of students with German as a second language (GL2) poses a great challenge for schools. Previous studies showed that especially young learners with a migration background are lagging behind in the acquisition of second language (L2) literacy. Experiencing problem behaviors (PB) in addition, might pose even greater challenges. Adequate vocabulary, including knowledge of additional vocabulary facts, is essential for appropriate L2 proficiency, and therefore, it is a crucial aspect of support that should be focused on. Thus, the aim of the study was to support vocabulary acquisition in students with GL2 regarding two aspects: (1) the acquisition of expressive and receptive vocabulary, and (2) the incidental acquisition of additional information regarding the vocabulary that are not explicitly focused on during...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: metacognición diferencias individuales estrategias de aprendizaje

Resumen:

Texto completo

Metacognition, the ability to understand and regulate one’s cognitive processes, is recognized as a key factor in effective English as a foreign language (EFL) learning. It involves both an awareness of the cognitive demands of tasks and the ability to manage these tasks to achieve specific outcomes. Similarly, grit, defined as perseverance and passion for achieving long-term goals, has emerged as a significant predictor of success in English learning. However, the relationship between metacognition and grit remains largely unexplored, especially how learners perceive and regulate their grit at a metacognitive level. This study addresses this gap by adopting a mixed-methods approach, combining...

Pre-task planning effects on learner engagement in face-to-face and synchronous computer-mediated communication
Xuyan Qiu, Gavin Bui (2025)
Language Teaching Research 29-7
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enfoque por tareas expresión oral interacción

Resumen:

This study investigates the effects of pre-task planning on English as a second language (ESL) learners’ engagement in oral tasks in the face-to-face real-time communication (FTF) and synchronous video-based computer-mediated communication (SvCMC) modes. A total of 36 ESL learners performed two decision-making tasks (with versus without pre-task planning) in dyads in the FTF or the SvCMC mode. Their oral discourse of tasks was analysed via seven indicators in terms of behavioral, cognitive and social engagement. Their emotional engagement was captured via an interview immediately after the task performance. As the results showed, pre-task planning did not significantly affect the learners’ behavioral, cognitive and social engagement in either the FTF or the SvCMC condition. In SvCMC, more negotiations on content were produced when...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas AICLE/CLIL aula invertida/flipped learning

Resumen:

Texto completo

Although research on flipped learning continues to explore ways to enhance its effectiveness, little attention has been paid to its combinations with other instructional approaches to improve alignment with diverse educational and learner needs. This study investigated the effects of the proposed Flipping Content and Language Integrated Learning approach in Asian tertiary education contexts. A quasi-experimental pilot study involved a group of low-achieving university students who learned with the Flipping Content and Language Integrated Learning approach over an academic term (i.e., a 26-week treatment period). Employing a repeated measures design, the study collected data through learning...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación creencias y actitudes de los profesores formación de profesores

Resumen:

This study investigated the relationship between pre-service English-as-a-second-language (ESL) teachers’ pedagogical beliefs and their actual teaching practices. To determine the nature of this relationship, 99 teachers-in-training with little or no teaching experience were asked to complete a questionnaire seeking information about their teaching beliefs, particularly about oral corrective feedback (i.e. teachers’ responses to students’ language errors). The teachers’ responses were subjected to an exploratory factor analysis which revealed several dimensions underlying their beliefs. To examine how these beliefs affect classroom performance, 10 of the teachers were first asked to indicate how they would correct language errors illustrated in hypothetical (videotaped) classroom scenarios and were then observed teaching an authentic...

Use of motivational regulation strategies and its relations to motivational beliefs in a college English course context
Sha Luo, Zhengdong Gan (2026)
Language Teaching Research 30-6
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación estrategias de aprendizaje creencias y actitudes de los estudiantes

Resumen:

While motivational regulation strategies (MRSs) both as a core facet of self-regulated learning and as a pedagogical issue have attracted increasing attention from researchers and practitioners, what motivational regulation strategies learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) or English as a second language (ESL) tend to use and how these strategies may be associated with learner motivational beliefs in English learning remain under-researched. To fill this research gap, this study aims to contribute to a holistic understanding of Chinese EFL students’ use of MRSs and its relations to English learning motivational beliefs. Data were collected from 638 non-English major undergraduate students through two self-report questionnaires in a College English Course context. Results showed that students reported high frequency use of...

Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: expresión escrita comprensión lectora creencias y actitudes de los estudiantes

Resumen:

This study explored how the iterative continuation task can be incorporated into a writing course in a setting for English as a foreign language (EFL). It investigated the effectiveness of the iterative continuation task in influencing senior high school students’ writing performance and their writing attitudes. Eighty-four year-one students from a China’s provincial senior high school participated in the study. They were divided into two groups: an experimental group and a control group, each consisting of 42 students. The experimental group was subjected to six turns of reading–writing continuation tasks, whereas the control group continued with the previous practice of a single turn of reading–writing continuation tasks. Data were collected from writing tests and questionnaires. The results show that the iterative continuation task...
