Virtual exchanges (VE) are gaining popularity as an opportunity to provide learners with authentic language and intercultural experiences mediated by technology. This article presents the results of a VE project aimed at developing intercultural and digital competences among Spanish Language Teaching (SLT) learners and trainee teachers. Among the main components of the project, the design, implementation and monitoring of telecollaborative tasks constitute key elements for the success of the project. The VE was carried out with Spanish learners in Ireland and Spanish and Latin American trainee teachers in Spain. Globalization and networking technologies have transformed the contexts, means, and uses of foreign language learning. The Internet offers a vast array of texts, ?lms, music, news, information, pedagogical resources, sounds, and images from around the world as well as unprecedented opportunities for direct communication with native speakers in real time. However, the very technology that delivers the sematerials and interactions can produce subtle mediational effects that can influence how learners evaluate and interpret them. Este estudio exploratorio se centra en analizar las posibilidades de TikTok como herramienta de enseñanza y aprendizaje de LE/L2 en el contexto de un proyecto de telecolaboración entre estudiantes de español LE/L2 y profesores en formación de dos universidades en contextos geográficos distintos. El corpus está formado por cuarenta y dos tiktoks que se analizaron siguiendo cuatro criterios principales: la temática y contenido, la tipología, los componentes multimodales y otros recursos que intervienen su producción. The model of telecollaboration described in this chapter, Cultura, is one whose focus is precisely that of intercultural competence. Its methodology integrates culture into the language classroom by facilitating the direct communication between two groups of learners from different cultures and the comparison of those cultures. This mixed-methods study investigates the use of synchronous video computer-mediated communication (SVCMC) in a U.S. university?s Spanish-as-a-foreign-language curriculum. Using the SVCMC platform TalkAbroad, the university?s Spanish program required second-year students to participate in five, 30-minute, SVCMC conversations with Spanish first language (L1) speakers. Students then reflected on their SVCMC conversations by replaying the recorded audio from those sessions and transcribing passages of their conversations. Using an interactionist perspective, this research explores the utility of: (1) the SVCMC conversations, and (2) the subsequent listening/transcription activity by examining students? reported noticing of linguistic items (e.g. L1 speaker vocabulary, grammar, etc.).
