Resumen:
The debate on multilingual (codeswitching) versus monolingual (immersive, target-language only) approaches to second language (L2) teaching has received renewed attention in recent decades. Both approaches are employed in L2 teaching and learning, supported by competing philosophies regarding the need for maximal L2 input and the facilitative potential of first language (L1) inclusion. Given a growth in experimental research comparing the effectiveness in terms of learning outcomes of the two approaches in L2 classrooms, this meta-analysis study investigates the effects of multilingual versus monolingual approaches on outcomes as measured by language assessments and examines the variables (age, proficiency, learning context, target skill area, and procedure for learning) that moderate such effects. We conducted a comprehensive search...

Temas: uso de la L1 en el aula aprendizaje colaborativo expresión escrita
Resumen:
Despite previous research suggesting that first language (L1) use fulfills important functions in collaborative writing (CW) tasks, research has yet to examine whether L1 or second language (L2) use may lead to variation in the lexico-grammatical aspects of learners’ collaborative texts and the pair talk. Using a corpus-based approach, this study examined how interacting in the L1 or the L2 during CW tasks influenced the use of lexico-grammatical features in learners’ co-constructed texts and the focus areas of their pair talk. The results suggest that L1 interaction significantly facilitates the production of lexico-grammatical features typical of academic writing in learners’ co-constructed texts. Additionally, compared with L2 interaction, L1 interaction allows learners to focus more on language and task management in pair talk....

Resumen:
Developing teachers’ professional agency through standard models of instructional designs is critical in helping them deal with the barriers in designing and implementing online learning environments. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the role of an ADDIE (Analysis–Design–Development–Implementation–Evaluation) model of the computer-assisted language learning (CALL) teacher preparation program (TPP) in developing TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) student-teachers’ professional agency (PA). We conducted an instrumental (exploratory) case study to explore the PA development of 18 TEFL student-teachers who took a CALL course that was designed based on ADDIE. The deductive thematic analysis of student-teachers’ autobiographical narratives, unstructured interviews, and course projects showed that each stage of...

Resumen:
Willingness to communicate (WTC) reflects an intersection between instructed second language acquisition and learner psychology. WTC results from the coordinated interaction among complex processes that prepare second language (L2) learners to choose to use their L2 for authentic communication. Prior research has revealed considerable complexity in the influences on dynamic changes in WTC from moment-to-moment. The heuristic ‘pyramid model’ of WTC (MacIntyre et al., 1998) proposes interactions among approximately 30 different variables that may influence WTC. The present study uses the pyramid model to interpret data from three focal participants, all English as a second language (ESL) learners...

Resumen:
This study examined the extent to which textual enhancement incorporated into the post-task stage of task-based reading lessons can promote development in second language (L2) grammatical knowledge. The participants were 49 child language learners who participated in task-based reading lessons in their own classroom contexts. They were randomly assigned to two groups, one being exposed to textual enhancement and the other not. The experiment adopted a multiple-exposure design involving six treatment sessions over three weeks. The target construction was the third person singular -s morpheme. Pretest-posttest development was assessed with a grammaticality judgement test. The results revealed a...

Resumen:
Second and foreign language (L2) learning boredom has triggered a spate of studies in recent years. Researchers have also developed instruments that tap into this emotion. However, such tools contain many items, may be culture-specific, or have a disputed factor structure. To address these shortcomings, we aimed to develop and validate a short version of the 23-item Boredom in Practical English Classes-Revised (BPELC-R) Scale. A dataset from 1,254 students in degree programs in English from different countries (i.e., Hungary, Iran, Iraq, Poland) was used. Data were split into two groups, and the first sample was used to develop the short-form measure, with principal component analysis (PCA)...

Resumen:
Although research shows that second language (L2) learners have major difficulties in developing their productive vocabulary skills, little research has been conducted on how to facilitate productive mastery of learned words. With this in mind, this study investigated the effects of task type and repetition frequency on improving receptive word knowledge to productive mastery. The 146 university students enrolled in an EFL course were assigned to four groups, each doing a different form of vocabulary exercises (multiple-choice, gap-filling, sentence translation and sentence writing) for 12 successive weeks. The 18 targets the participants knew receptively were divided into three sets that were repeated two, four and six times respectively. Productive knowledge of the targets was measured two weeks after the treatment. The results...

Resumen:
The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into language education has transformed how learners manage and direct their learning processes. Despite the growing adoption of AI-assisted tools, empirical understanding of their psychological and behavioral impacts remains incomplete. This study investigated how engagement in AI-assisted language learning environments shapes learners’ self-regulation, autonomy, and self-directed learning behaviors. Drawing on self-determination theory and Zimmerman’s model of self-regulated learning, the research employed a quantitative design with data collected from 736 Chinese university students using validated questionnaires measuring AI engagement, self-regulation, self-directed learning, and learner autonomy. Structural equation modeling (SEM) and correlational analyses were conducted...

Resumen:
The present multiple case study is situated within the growing wave of research on the role of emotions in second language learning. It focuses more specifically on the relationship between emotion, motivation, willingness to communicate and the second language context. The participants were two adult learners of English as a second or other language (ESOL) in the United Kingdom: Aurora and Emilie (pseudonyms). Semi-structured interviews with the learners and their tutors, conducted face to face, were complemented with lesson observations over an academic term to achieve an in-depth understanding of the relationship between emotion, motivation, willingness to communicate and the learning context. Enjoyment and anxiety were the most salient emotions that emerged; however, the sources of these emotions were slightly different for the...

Resumen:
This study examined the use of artificial intelligence tools, which have garnered significant attention in recent years, in the assessment and evaluation processes of language education. For this purpose, student essays were scored by Turkish middle school teachers and artificial intelligence tools both with and without the use of a rubric, and the findings were evaluated based on generalizability theory. Additionally, the research findings were shared with participants to gather qualitative data, which were analysed using the inductive thematic analysis method to support the research results. The findings revealed that in evaluations conducted without a rubric, teachers were limited in their...
