Resumen:
Knowing how to create a positive motivational climate that motivates college students to engage in second language (L2) courses can be a big challenge for some L2 college professors. We created an intervention that used teaching strategies consistent with the MUSIC Model of Motivation to redesign lecture-based reading and listening classes within an L2 English course. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of the intervention on students’ perceptions of the motivational climate, motivation, and effort. Students were surveyed four times throughout the semester: before and after a reading class intervention, and before and after a listening class intervention. Participants included 31 first-year graduate students in a public university in eastern China. Paired t -test results showed that in the reading class, the...

Resumen:
This study investigated the short-term and delayed effects of comprehensive written corrective feedback (WCF) on L2 learners’ revision accuracy and new pieces of writing (i.e., the transfer effect of feedback). Three types of feedback were compared: direct feedback and two types of indirect feedback that differed in their degree of explicitness (i.e., underlining only and underlining+metalinguistic cues). Fifty-three intermediate level learners of English as a second language (ESL) were divided randomly into four groups: One direct, two indirect, and a control group. Students produced three pieces of writing from different picture prompts and revised them over a three-week period. Each group also produced a new piece of writing two weeks later. The study included seven sessions: Writing 1, revision of Writing 1, Writing 2, revision of...

Resumen:
Fluency is usually defined in relation to temporal features such as speed of delivery and pauses, and such features are generally the focus of research on fluency. The reasons why pauses occur, however, have received much less attention. This study first explores the distribution and location of pauses in short academic presentations given by students as part of an English for academic purposes (EAP) course at an Australian university. This data is then used to investigate the reasons for a sample of those pauses, using the researchers’ interpretations, followed by student explanations in stimulated recall interviews (SRIs). The main findings provide confirmation that the location and the reasons...

Resumen:
Although the number of studies into grit in second/foreign language (L2) learning is on the rise, available empirical evidence is still scant, particularly in relation to links between the two facets of (L2) grit (i.e. perseverance and interest), positive (i.e. enjoyment, curiosity) and negative (i.e. in-class and after-class boredom, anxiety) emotions as well as motivation. In addition, most research has been quantitative in nature and has mainly targeted Asian contexts. In order to fill these gaps, a mixed-methods study was undertaken among English majors and English student teachers in Hungary. It aimed to: (1) characterize the participants in terms of the variables under investigation, (2) identify their profiles in relation to general grit and L2 grit, and (3) determine the differences between the identified clusters with respect...

Resumen:
This study assesses a range of task-based interaction (i.e. structured vs. unstructured tasks) between lower-English-proficiency middle school English as a foreign language (EFL) learners in a task-based learning (TBL) class employing conversation analytic methodology. From the video data, which allowed for an emic analysis of the students’ vocal and non-vocal actions when engaging in the different task types, it was found that in both the structured and unstructured task interactions, because the students were mainly focused on task completion, there were frequent minimal turns and sequences. A deviant case analysis revealed that the participants prioritized task completion as the focus of activities even when engaging in social talk by evoking various types of roles (e.g. students, friends). The study proposes several pedagogical...

Resumen:
Foreign language teaching anxiety (FLTA) was reconceptualized as a multidimensional construct, involving both linguistic, target language-related anxiety and non-linguistic, general teaching anxiety. However, the interaction of these two types of anxieties, and the extent to which that interaction differs between pre-service and in-service teachers, remains untapped. To address this gap, this study surveyed 170 pre-service and 186 in-service English teachers. Psychological network analysis was used to visualize intricate interrelationships among linguistic and non-linguistic FLTA dimensions within each group. Results showed that linguistic and non-linguistic dimensions were intricately interconnected within both teacher groups. Notably, self-perception of language proficiency and lack of student interest emerged as the most central...

Resumen:
The increasing number of students with German as a second language (GL2) poses a great challenge for schools. Previous studies showed that especially young learners with a migration background are lagging behind in the acquisition of second language (L2) literacy. Experiencing problem behaviors (PB) in addition, might pose even greater challenges. Adequate vocabulary, including knowledge of additional vocabulary facts, is essential for appropriate L2 proficiency, and therefore, it is a crucial aspect of support that should be focused on. Thus, the aim of the study was to support vocabulary acquisition in students with GL2 regarding two aspects: (1) the acquisition of expressive and receptive vocabulary, and (2) the incidental acquisition of additional information regarding the vocabulary that are not explicitly focused on during...

Resumen:
Metacognition, the ability to understand and regulate one’s cognitive processes, is recognized as a key factor in effective English as a foreign language (EFL) learning. It involves both an awareness of the cognitive demands of tasks and the ability to manage these tasks to achieve specific outcomes. Similarly, grit, defined as perseverance and passion for achieving long-term goals, has emerged as a significant predictor of success in English learning. However, the relationship between metacognition and grit remains largely unexplored, especially how learners perceive and regulate their grit at a metacognitive level. This study addresses this gap by adopting a mixed-methods approach, combining...

Resumen:
Digital multimodal composing (DMC) has attracted language instructors’ and researchers’ increasing attention during recent years. Previous studies mainly investigated the students’ DMC processes and perceptions, but DMC products are underexamined, and in particular, scarce is research comparing collaborative DMC products and individual DMC products. This article reports an empirical study conducted with 185 EFL college students in an English for specific purposes (ESP) course in Vietnam, in which they completed two infographic tasks using Visme, one collaboratively and the other individually. The DMC products were graded according to a rubric assessing the aspects of content/organization, multimedia/visual effects, and language use; the accuracy of the students’ infographics was also evaluated. The results of variance (MANOVA) test...

Resumen:
The current study investigated how problem-based English language learning influenced Korean secondary students’ self-directed learning readiness (SDLR). Based on the analysis of 78 students’ responses on the pre- and post-surveys, it was revealed that the students experienced significant increases in their SDLR in 18 out of 46 items, and many were related to learning strategy management, examination management, and time management. While male students showed an increase in five items, female students revealed an increase in 19 items, mostly related to learning strategy management, stress management, and assignment management. In the analysis of the relative significance of the change, the females revealed a more meaningful increase of their SDLR in seven items compared to the males. The items were focused on assignment management,...
