AI detectors in universities: Time to turn them off and embrace AI for enhanced learning
Tadhg Blommerde, William Bright, Ellie Musgrave (2024)
Educational Developments
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: trabajo teórico

Temas: inteligencia artificial

This paper explores the relationship between mind and machine at the intersection of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) and research writing in Higher Education. Through provocative stylistic resistance, the focus here shifts from what GenAI can or cannot produce to the paradoxical human behaviours in response, for instance, the mechanical predictability of narrative arcs prevalent in contemporary GenAI-related scholarship, whether human-produced or not. Whilst recognising the seductive allure of convenience for academics in toxic publish-or-perish cultures, this work accentuates concerning practices of self-censorship particularly among multicultural researchers to avoid GenAI usage accusations. Overzealous AI detection witch hunts are scrutinised as convenient gatekeeping proxies masking deeper concerns of intellectual...

This chapter presents a critical analysis of generative AI (GenAI) detection tools in higher education assessments. The rapid advancement and widespread adoption of GenAI, particularly in education, necessitates a reevaluation of traditional academic integrity mechanisms. I explore the effectiveness, vulnerabilities, and ethical implications of AI detection tools in the context of preserving academic integrity. My analysis synthesizes insights from various case studies, newspaper articles, and student testimonies to scrutinize the practical and philosophical challenges associated with AI detection. I argue that reliance on detection mechanisms is misaligned with the educational landscape, where...

Resumen:

The advent of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has further intensified concerns about academic integrity, raising fundamental questions about ethical behavior in assessment practices. Given that most of the conversation is currently focused on what students’ ethical behavior should be, we extend the conversation in this chapter to propose a theoretical framework for ethical assessment from the educator’s side. By adopting a student-centered perspective and considering the evolving role of GenAI in education, we redefine ethical assessment in a way that prioritizes meaningful learning and consequently promotes academic integrity. This framework aims to guide educators in developing assessments that align with...

Purpose: This paper aims to provide an overview of key definitions related to ChatGPT, a public tool developed by OpenAI, and its underlying technology, Generative Pretrained Transformer (GPT).

Design/methodology/approach: This paper includes an interview with ChatGPT on its potential impact on academia and libraries. The interview discusses the benefits of ChatGPT such as improving search and discovery, reference and information services; cataloging and metadata generation; and content creation, as well as the ethical considerations that need to be taken into account, such as privacy and bias.

Findings: ChatGPT has...

The use of artificial intelligence in academia is a hot topic in the education field. ChatGPT is an AI tool that offers a range of benefits, including increased student engagement, collaboration, and accessibility. However, is also raises concerns regarding academic honesty and plagiarism. This paper examines the opportunities and challenges of using ChatGPT in higher education, and discusses the potential risks and rewards of these tools. The paper also considers the difficulties of detecting and preventing academic dishonesty, and suggests strategies that universities can adopt to ensure ethical and responsible use of these tools. These strategies include developing policies and procedures,...

Why AI will not democratize education: A critical pragmatist perspective

Resumen:

This paper builds on Dewey’s philosophy of education to argue that AI, at least in its current commercial form, is likely to have a negative impact on democratic education. AI and other digital technologies are currently being touted for their potential to “democratise” education, even if it is not clear what this would entail. Adopting Dewey’s notion of democratic education, I emphasise that education needs to provide children with skills and dispositions necessary for democratic living, experience in communication and cooperation, opportunities to codetermine the shape of democratic institutions and education itself, and equal opportunities to participate in learning. This allows me to...

Resumen:

In recent years, no other technology has revolutionised our life as Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI). GenAI has gained the attention of a myriad of users in almost every profession. Its advancement has had an intense impact on education, significantly disrupting the assessment design and evaluation methodologies. Despite the potential benefits and possibilities of GenAI in the education sector, there are several concerns primarily centred around academic integrity, authenticity, equity of access, assessment evaluation methodology, and feedback. Consequently, academia is encountering challenges in assessment design that are essential to retaining academic integrity in the age of GenAI. In this article, we discuss the challenges, and opportunities that need to be addressed for the assessment design and evaluation. The article...

The opposite of cheating: Teaching for integrity in the age of AI

Metodología: propuesta didáctica

Temas: inteligencia artificial

Resumen:

In these days of an ever-expanding internet, generative AI, and term paper mills, students may find it too easy and tempting to cheat, and teachers may think they can't keep up. What's needed, and what Tricia Bertram Gallant and David A. Rettinger offer in this timely book, is a new approach—one that works with the realities of the twenty-first century, not just to protect academic integrity but also to maximize opportunities for students to learn. The Opposite of Cheating presents a positive, forward-looking, research-backed vision for what classroom integrity can look like in the GenAI era, both in cyberspace and on campus. Accordingly, the book outlines workable measures teachers can use to better understand why students cheat and to prevent cheating while aiming to enhance learning and integrity. Bertram Gallant and Rettinger...

Resumen:

Texto completo

The emergence of OpenAI's ChatGPT has put intense spotlight on Generative AI (Gen-AI) systems and their possible impacts on Academic integrity. This paper provides an overview of the current arguments around ChatGPT and Academic integrity and concludes that although these technologies are capable of revolutionising academia, the way ChatGPT and other generative AI systems are used could surely undermine academic integrity. However, to ensure that the risks to academic integrity are mitigated for greater maximisation, institutional and multi-stakeholder efforts are required.
