Resumen:
In this paper we describe an experiment in explicit instruction that compares traditional form-focused instruction and what we call processing instruction. Traditional instruction involves explanation and output practice of a grammatical point. Processing instruction involves explanation and practice/experience processing input data, taking learner strategies in input processing as the starting point for determining what explicit instruction should look like. Pretest and posttest measures involving both a sentence-level interpretation (comprehension) task and a sentence-level production task were submitted to an analysis of variance. Results reveal significant gains in both comprehension and production for subjects who experienced processing instruction. For those experiencing traditional instruction, significant gains were made in...

Resumen:
The rapid integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) into educational contexts has presented both opportunities and challenges for students seeking and using feedback. While AI-generated feedback can offer increased access, timely responses and personalised insights, concerns about the quality of AI-generated feedback still persist, including issues of bias, factual inaccuracies, and homogenisation. This study investigates how students use, value and trust AI-generated feedback compared to feedback from educators. This paper draws on a large-scale cross-sectional survey administered across four major Australian universities. A quantitative analysis of ...

Resumen:
Examines the effects of ChatGPT's Advanced Voice Mode on the development of university students' oral proficiency. Following a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, the study measured improvement over an 8-week intervention and then gathered learners' perspectives through semi-structured interviews. Quantitative findings showed that fluency and lexical resources increased significantly, but pronunciation did not. The qualitative data focus on three themes: the potential of AI for low-anxiety practice, learners' frustration with the lack of nuanced feedback on accent, and difficulties with real-time corrective functions. The authors propose a «Mixed Dialogical Model» combining...

This article presents a study of corrective feedback and learner uptake (i.e., responses to feedback) in four immersion classrooms at the primary level. Transcripts totaling 18.3 hours of classroom interaction taken from 14 subject-matter lessons and 13 French language arts lessons were analyzed using a model developed for the study and comprising the various moves in an error treatment sequence. Results include the frequency and distribution of the six different feedback types used by the four teachers, in addition to the frequency and distribution of different types of learner uptake following each feedback type. The findings indicate an overwhelming tendency for teachers to use recasts in spite of the latter’s ineffectiveness at eliciting student-generated repair. Four other feedback types—elicitation, metalinguistic feedback,...

Resumen:
Generative AI tools provide opportunities for personalizing and improving the education process. This paper analyzes the tool Brisk Teaching, used in the courses Information and Communication Technologies and E-Business during the academic year 2024/25 at the Zagreb School of Economics and Management. After recognizing weak points in students' knowledge, the authors implemented chatbots to help students learn and to provide professors with quick feedback on student progress. The paper examines the connection between students' activity with the GenAI tool and the results achieved in the knowledge test: students were very satisfied with its implementation and believe it provides additional motivation for learning.

This study examines the impact of Gen-AI on EFL learners' foreign language (FL) pronunciation ability, FL speaking anxiety, self-directed speaking motivation, and social interaction confidence through Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT). Using a mixed-methods approach, the study conducted quantitative assessments of pronunciation ability and speaking anxiety, while qualitatively exploring learners' experiences with Gen-AI feedback through in-depth interviews. Findings suggest that learners experienced improvements in pronunciation ability and reductions in FL speaking anxiety, which coincided with increased self-directed motivation and social interaction confidence. When...

Resumen:
A number of theories of second language (L2) acquisition acknowledge a role for explicit L2 knowledge. However, the testing of these theories remains problematic because of the lack of a widely accepted means for measuring L2 explicit knowledge. This article seeks to address this lacuna by examining L2 explicit knowledge from two perspectives. First, it considers explicit knowledge as a construct. How can explicit knowledge be defined? How does it differ from other constructs such as L2 proficiency and language aptitude? Second, the article considers how L2 explicit knowledge can be measured. It critically reviews some of the ways in which explicit knowledge has been operationalized in second language acquisition research and discusses some of the instruments that have been used to measure L2 explicit knowledge. It concludes with some...
