An artificial intelligence assistant to reader response theory: Pioneering novel analysis in the digital age
Nursaid Nursaid, Bima Mhd Ghaluh, Ella Wulandari (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: inteligencia artificial

Resumen:

This study investigates the impact of an artificial intelligence (AI) assistant on reader response theory in novel analysis using a mixed-methods approach. It examines how AI-generated real-time feedback, powered by advanced machine learning and natural language processing, enhances interpretive possibilities beyond conventional methods, aligning with reader response theory’s emphasis on reader-text interaction. The AI assistant, designed with Real-Time Theme Identification, Character Relationship Mapping, Symbolism Detection, and Interactive Literary Simulation, supports nuanced interpretations, uncovers underlying patterns, and fosters deeper engagement with literary texts. Participants (n = 100), aged 15–18 years, were divided into an experimental group (n = 50), which used the AI assistant for novel analysis, and...

Exploring motivation: Contract-based ungrading in intermediate Spanish courses
Christina Beaubien, Andie Faber (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación

Resumen:

Given that the classroom is a social context that can either satisfy or frustrate learner motivation, pedagogical strategies bound by controlling evaluative frameworks, such as traditional grading systems (TGS), provide little support for long-term learning. This is especially concerning in the world language (WL) classroom where successful learning outcomes are determined by both affective and contextual factors. To this end, this action research examines the design and implementation of an ungrading pedagogical framework we have titled Contract-Based Ungrading (CBU), in order to explore how evaluative systems interplay with motivational factors in the WL classroom. Data sources included teacher and learner artifacts as well as anonymous questionnaires, analyzed using content analysis and extreme case sampling. Following a...

AI chatbot-assisted vocabulary learning: Relationships with self-regulation, motivation, and performance among Chinese private college students
Chun Hao, Wei Xu, Mengyao Hao (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario

Resumen:

This study empirically investigated the application of a large language-model-driven artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot in self-regulated vocabulary acquisition among Chinese private college students. An 8-week experiment comparing AI-chatbot-assisted and conventional self-regulated vocabulary learning demonstrated that AI chatbot assistance could significantly improve vocabulary performance both across and within groups. Results revealed that the use of AI chatbot not only improved learning outcomes directly through personalized, self-paced learning but also indirectly by enhancing vocabulary learning strategy use and satisfying basic psychological needs. Notably, metacognitive strategy use fully mediated the relationship between perceived autonomy and vocabulary performance. Moreover, perceived autonomy moderated the effect of the...

Shortcomings and challenges in the intersection of L2 pedagogy and applied cognitive linguistics. A case study of the Spanish simple pasts
Reyes Llopis-García, Irene Alonso-Aparicio (2024)
Review of Cognitive Linguistics
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: lingüística cognitiva

Resumen:

This paper aims to explore the shortcomings and challenges of Applied Cognitive Linguistics (ACL) in L2 classrooms and research. It examines the main issues and presents a case study with three quasi-experimental classroom studies. These experiments taught the Spanish past simple tenses using approaches informed by Cognitive Linguistics and Communicative Language Teaching, plus a control group, through a pretest/posttest design. Results favored cognitive-pedagogical instruction, but only in one production task (Alonso-Aparicio & Llopis-García, 2019). Subsequent studies replicated and extended the first, with further changes in instruction and assessment design, but found no significant differences between experimental groups in the posttest. The discussion highlights the steps taken to ensure study success, pointing out...

More than tough luck. Navigating challenges in teaching/learning L2 Spanish comparative constructions
Zeina Alhmoud (2024)
Review of Cognitive Linguistics
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: gramática

Resumen:

Applied Cognitive Linguistics (ACL, henceforth) offers a vision of language closely tied to our experiences and views of the world, showing great promise for foreign language teaching and learning. Building upon this meaning-centered perspective, this paper discusses an interventional, quasi-experimental study assessing the effectiveness of incorporating animated images into materials for teaching comparative constructions in L2 Spanish. Conducted in three phases with varying participation rates (69 students in the first, 18 in the second, and 27 in the third), the study faced numerous factors that hindered data collection process and thereby influenced the results. Although the findings were not statistically significant, they suggest a slight improvement in post-test performance in both the experimental and comparison groups. While...

Pedagogical potential of Cognitive Grammar descriptions for the pluperfect in Spanish. Language users’ judgements and corpus searches as pre-experimental validation criteria
Alejandro Castañeda Castro, Adolfo Sánchez Cuadrado (2024)
Review of Cognitive Linguistics
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: lingüística cognitiva

Resumen:

Second/foreign language grammar studies usually focus on the validation of grammatical conceptualizations with learners, sometimes overlooking the paramount need to test these conceptualizations against users’ judgements and corpus searches as a way of verifying the relevance, frequency and suitability of the items, examples or explanations before the experimental phases. This paper deals with three pre-experimental validation criteria employed to measure the pedagogical potential of Cognitive Grammar descriptions for the Spanish pluperfect: (1) learner corpus searches based on caes – Corpus de Aprendices de Español –, (2) native-speaker corpus searches by means of EsTenTen-18-subcorpus from Sketch Engine, and (3) language users’ judgements. This tense rarely receives enough attention in learning materials due to its apparent...

Challenges and potential of quasi-experimental studies in cognitive linguistics applied to language teaching and learning
Beatriz Martín-Gascón (2024)
Review of Cognitive Linguistics
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: lingüística cognitiva

Resumen:

This review study focuses on the challenges faced when conducting effects-of-instruction research in Applied Cognitive Linguistics. It offers an overview of relevant research that has sought to demonstrate the effectiveness of a cognitive-based approach to second language (L2) pedagogy and provides illustrations from previous work in L2 Spanish by the author and colleagues of some of the factors that can influence findings in quasi-experimental research. More specifically, the study addresses some of the difficulties encountered in the design of materials and assessment tests, during the pedagogical intervention and the data collection and data analysis phases. These include choice of assessment, test effects, sample size, withdrawal, and time-on-task, among others. Along with these methodological issues, a discussion of possible...

Does writing words in notes contribute to vocabulary learning?
Zhouhan Jin, Stuart Webb (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario

Resumen:

Texto completo

There has been little research investigating the effects of notetaking on foreign language (FL) learning, and no studies have examined how it affects vocabulary learning. The present study investigated the vocabulary written in notes of 86 students after they had listened to a teacher in an English as a foreign language (EFL) class. The results showed that 51.2% of participants took notes, and 32.6% wrote information about target words in notes. However, there were only 95 instances of information written about the 28 target words. The results revealed that the odds of vocabulary learning were 15 and 10 times higher in the immediate and delayed...

Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: creencias y actitudes de los profesores

Resumen:

Texto completo

Studies on teachers’ beliefs about vocabulary learning and teaching have focused, so far, on English as a second language (L2), or foreign language (FL), in different contexts but little attention has been given to other L2s and FLs. In this study, 15 Spanish L2 instructors at large universities were interviewed in order to better understand where they stand when it comes to (1) the importance they give to vocabulary, as compared to grammar, in their classes, (2) how they decide which words to teach, and (3) how they assess students’ word knowledge. These interviews were subsequently analysed following Grounded Theory. Most instructors...
