Resumen:
Research on how foreign language learners use discourse markers (DMs) has largely centered on English, with limited attention to functional category development in other languages such as Spanish. At the same time, the relationship between study-abroad (SA) experience and proficiency in shaping DM usage remains inadequately understood. This study analyzes how proficiency (B1 versus B2 levels) and SA experience (with versus without) relate to Chinese learners' use of functional DM in Spanish. More specifically, the study employs a between-subjects design with two oral tasks, and the collected DM data were classified into four functional categories: Estructuradores de la Información (EST, information-structuring markers), Conectores (CON, connective markers), Operadores Argumentativos (OA, argumentative operators), and Marcadores...

Resumen:
Teacher burnout and attrition are significant concerns in the United States and globally, particularly in high-needs areas such as world language (WL) teaching. Despite extensive international research on teacher burnout and attrition, few studies have specifically examined how demographic characteristics may influence burnout and intent to quit among WL teachers. To address this gap, this study employed a cross-sectional research design utilizing a factorial multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) to explore the relationships between various demographic factors and teacher burnout and intent to quit in high school WL teachers. Analysis revealed statistically significant main, interactive, and between-participants effects for a range of personal characteristics (i.e. gender, age, race, and ethnicity), teacher characteristics (i.e....

Resumen:
Task modality (oral vs. writing) has been found to affect the production, nature and resolution of the language-related episodes (LREs) produced by adult learners in collaborative interaction, a finding also attested in very recent and still limited research with young learners, a population that deserves greater attention in the literature. Besides, previous research has not yet considered the incorporation of LREs in the final output of both oral and written tasks. Nor has it controlled for the differential levels of accuracy that the oral vs. the written modality demand, or the opportunity for revising the output equally in both modalities. Besides, little is known about learners' motivation towards tasks of different modality. This article fills these gaps by examining the effect of task-modality on the production of LREs by 10-...

Resumen:
Grit is among the individual difference (ID) variables that have recently come to the attention of researchers investigating second language acquisition. While some empirical evidence has been accumulated, it is clearly scant and limited, also because of the fact that many studies have looked into domain-general grit rather than this attribute as related to learning second or foreign languages. The present article seeks to fill this gap by reporting the findings of a study which has investigated the relationships among grit and a number of other ID factors, that is, domain-general grit, intended effort, language learning enjoyment, and language learning curiosity, as well as background variables, such as age, gender, year of study and experience in learning the target language. Correlational analyses, regression analyses, independent...

Resumen:
Many secondary school students' second language (L2) speaking skills suffer from deficiencies; the effects thereof are detrimental to their academic and career opportunities in a globalized world that highlights the importance of oral communication skills. Debate has been considered a potentially effective speaking pedagogical tool that can scaffold learning processes in ways that can lead to language development. This study investigates the effect of a debate intervention on English L2 speaking competence of Dutch secondary school students. Following a pretest–posttest control group design, we elicited speech samples from opinion tasks which we coded in terms of measures of speech quantity, fluency, complexity, accuracy and cohesion. Multilevel analysis results indicate that after the intervention, the intervention group produced...

Resumen:
This study investigates whether linguistic outcomes of second language (L2) learners' performance are consistent across oral and written modalities and, if so, whether the consistency remains across proficiency levels. The study also explores whether the linguistic outcomes of speaking, writing, or both are related to working memory capacity. Eighty-six L2 learners, from beginner to advanced, described a series of pictures within time constraints in speech and in writing, and completed two working memory tests. The study found greater syntactic complexity and lexical sophistication in the written than in the oral modality. However, the oral task elicited more lexical diversity, and the advanced learners produced more subordinate clauses in the oral task than in the written task. Learners with more working memory capacity produced...

Resumen:
This article presents and discusses findings of project-based (language) learning and teaching (PBLT) research published in English between 2002 and 2024. The purpose of our qualitative research synthesis (QRS) is to identify the macro and micro contexts, research foci, theoretical and methodological orientations, technology use as well as benefits, challenges, and regional understanding of PBLT in East and Southeast Asia as reported in the studies analysed for this QRS. Our goals for conducting the QRS study are to offer generalizable findings of 21 years of PBLT research to guide future PBLT research and to inform PBLT pedagogy in East and Southeast Asia. The findings of our QRS contribute to the advancement of the emerging qualitative research synthesis in the TESOL field in general and of PBLT research and practice in particular...

Resumen:
This study explores whether middle-school students can exploit explicitly addressed crosslinguistic lexical similarities between German and English to learn vocabulary more efficiently. Across six weeks, 260 Swiss German learners of English as a foreign language (17 classes) completed three vocabulary learning tests (T1, T2 and T3). Additionally, 7 of these 17 classes attended a 90-minute intervention between the first and second test: During a 45-minute introductory lesson students discovered four systematic orthographic correspondence rules (e.g.
to as in ship and Schiff), followed by three 15-minute sessions to consolidate their knowledge. The intervention group's improvement in cognate learning was significantly larger in comparison to the control group. The difference was observed across both test modes and all rules...

Resumen:
Boredom, though a significant emotion in second language acquisition, has received less attention compared with anxiety and enjoyment. Existing research on the effects of boredom presents mixed findings. To date, no study has systematically synthesized evidence regarding its impact on language achievement and its potential moderating factors. This study addresses this gap by conducting a meta-analysis to examine the influence of boredom on language achievement. A comprehensive analysis of 23 studies involving 9,154 participants was performed. The results from the random effects model revealed a small to medium negative effect size (r = −0.34), indicating that boredom has a detrimental impact on language achievement. Furthermore, moderator analyses identified significant variations in effect sizes across different research contexts,...

Resumen:
Learner engagement has been the focus of a growing amount of research in recent years both in general educational psychology and the field of second language acquisition (SLA). However, while recent contributions on learner engagement in language classrooms have provided valuable insights, the field is still only at the early stages of understanding the complexity of the concept and creating a strong empirical evidence base. This study is intended to contribute to our current understanding by investigating both learners' and teachers' perceptions on what might prevent motivated second language (L2) learners from engaging with language learning in and out of classrooms. A total of 39 learners and teachers were interviewed in two countries, England and Finland, and the results indicate a variety of potential reasons for motivated...
