Resumen:
The crucial role of emotion regulation in learning has been well established, but its potential impact on the English as a foreign language (EFL) learning process remains uncertain. Examining the relationship between emotion regulation strategies and EFL learning engagement, as well as antecedent variables, has significant theoretical and practical value. This study aims to explored the potential mediating effects of emotion regulation strategies (cognitive reappraisal and emotion suppression) on the associations between perceived EFL teacher social support, peer social support and EFL learning engagement among Chinese adolescents. The data were gathered through an online survey of 1,506 (776 males) 10th to 12th high school EFL learners. Structural equation modeling was used to analyse the mediation model. This study found that EFL...

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas creencias y actitudes de los profesores pronunciación
Resumen:
Teacher cognition has attracted increased attention among second language (L2) researchers and practitioners, likely because of its potential consequences for classroom practices, such as teaching and assessment. Prior research has revealed links between teacher beliefs about pronunciation teaching and teachers’ own experience (e.g. amount of teacher training and teaching experience). However, no research has to date focused on how teachers’ experience and their beliefs are intertwined, possibly affecting teacher assessments of L2 speakers’ pronunciation. For this study, 77 Japanese pre-service teachers of English completed an online questionnaire examining their beliefs about the teaching of English pronunciation and eliciting details about their L2 teaching and learning experience. Additionally, pre-service teachers assessed 40...

Temas: creencias y actitudes de los profesores multilingüismo migración y acogida
Resumen:
This article aims to explore second language (L2) teachers’ attitudes to working with multilingual refugee learners in the context of a sudden shift towards an increasingly multilingual environment caused by the influx of Ukrainian refugee children in 2022 to Polish schools. The teachers have been prepared to teach predominantly monolingual classes and have not obtained any training to meet the needs of migrant and multilingual learners; thus, they had to rely on their personal resources facing this suddenly increasingly multilingual and multicultural environment. A cross-sectional survey study was designed to identify how attitudes of teachers of English and Polish as a foreign language (n = 70) developed towards teaching multilingual refugee learners and to what extent these correlated with teacher Openness to Experience,...

Resumen:
Although previous studies have examined the effects of context on students’ emotional responses to second language (L2) feedback, very few have explored how teachers can proactively intervene in these emotions through different feedback types. This quantitative study examines English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ emotional responses to direct and indirect written corrective feedback (WCF) in L2 writing, and whether the feedback context influences the link between these emotional responses and the subsequent revision behavior. The results indicated that direct WCF made students more contented and less anxious than indirect WCF. Under the direct WCF condition, emotions seemed to exert a marginal influence on students’ revision rates, whereas under the indirect WCF condition, contentment led to higher revision rates. This...

Resumen:
We evaluate the impact of gestures during the teaching of vocabulary in a foreign language (FL). Spanish speakers learned words in a FL in four gesture conditions according to the relationship between the meaning of the words and the gestures (congruent gestures, incongruent gestures, gestures without meaning, and no gestures). The participants learned the words by performing gestures (‘do’ teaching group) or by observing the gestures performed by others (‘see’ teaching group). Compared to the meaningless gesture condition, the processing of congruent gestures facilitated the recall of second language (L2) words in the ‘see’ and ‘do’ teaching groups. However, the interference effect associated with the processing of incongruent gestures was greater in the ‘see’ teaching group than in the ‘do’ teaching group. Thus, the performance of...

Resumen:
Self-regulated learning (SRL) is crucial to online language learning. Previous studies have shown that learners’ self-efficacy, task value, and SRL strategies improve SRL in online language learning contexts. However, how self-efficacy and task value affect different types of online SRL strategies is understudied. This study investigated the determinants of different types of online SRL strategies in online language learning courses to determine whether task value mediated self-efficacy and online SRL strategies. A total of 425 international university students who studied online Chinese language courses were recruited to complete self-report questionnaires measuring self-efficacy, task value and four types of online SRL strategies. Structural equation modelling showed that self-efficacy had significantly direct and positive effects...

Resumen:
This paper critically reviews long-term evidence on early English instruction in foreign language settings beyond the primary school years. It examines how early-start effects change across the transition to lower-secondary education, later school years, and college-level contexts, and which conditions are associated with their persistence, weakening, or re-emergence. Using a timeline approach, the review synthesizes school-based and post-school evidence across these stages. The findings indicate that early-start advantages are unstable, context-dependent, and often domain-specific rather than automatic or cumulative. Although cumulative exposure matters, the evidence does not support a consistent exposure threshold at which durable advantages emerge. Cross-study comparisons are also constrained by differences in assessment constructs...

Resumen:
Second language (L2) writing research has demonstrated that young learners discuss linguistic issues, make use of feedback, and show a generally positive disposition toward writing tasks. However, many issues deserve further investigation. Regarding task implementation, few studies have been conducted with young learners writing individually, and few have compared different feedback types. Also, the focus of analysis has mostly been placed on students’ discussions; little is known about aspects such as draft quality and task motivation. To address these gaps, draft quality and task motivation were measured in 75 learners (aged 10–12 years) engaged in a three-stage writing task. They were divided into a task repetition group (n = 21), a group that received feedback via direct corrections (n = 30), and a group that received feedback via...

Resumen:
The aim of this qualitative multiple-case study is to examine how six teachers implement linguistic mediation in their classrooms and to explore the implications of these practices for language pedagogy. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with three novice and three experienced teachers working at higher education institutions in Türkiye. Following the introduction of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages Companion Volume , mediation has become central to language education, with an increasing emphasis on mediation-oriented approaches. The findings indicate that, although 11 specific mediation activities and strategies (such as linking to prior knowledge and integrating technology) were identified, participants demonstrated limited conceptual clarity regarding mediation. Nevertheless, both novice...

Resumen:
In this article, we address collegiality among students and teachers and its potential for promoting meaningful experiences in teaching-learning processes. We analyse episodes drawn from the pedagogical practices of two of the authors of this text, who have taught English (Episode 1) and Portuguese (Episode 2). These episodes took place in two Brazilian public sector schools located in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Throughout our discussion, as Brazilian teacher-researchers, we align ourselves with studies on teaching-learning and language teacher education developed by the Exploratory Practice Group of Rio de Janeiro, with studies on autoethnography, as well as with the theoretical-analytical tools of narrative studies. As a result, we found that teaching proposals that encourage collaboration between students and teachers can promote...
