Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos estrategias de aprendizaje metodología de investigación

Resumen:

In the present study, we developed and tested the psychometric properties of the Second or Foreign Language Boredom Coping Strategies Scale, an instrument for measuring language learners’ coping strategies in response to the experience of boredom. The research is based on a four-dimensional model of coping mechanisms, which includes the behavioral approach, cognitive approach, behavioral avoidance, and cognitive avoidance. Each factor comprises three subcomponents, which delineate the diverse strategies learners adopt to mitigate boredom in language learning contexts. The scale was tested using a sample of 363 learners of English as a foreign language at the tertiary level. The factorial structure was analyzed through confirmatory factor analysis and exploratory structural equation modeling to verify the construct validity of the...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: trabajo teórico

Temas: adquisición de segundas lenguas input translingüismo

Resumen:

Texto completo

This article introduces the novel mixed language input paradigm (MiLIP), which utilizes language mixing as a pedagogical tool for language learning, and describes the methodology to conduct a longitudinal study using this paradigm. We illustrate the paradigm using the example of intrasententially mixed Greek (target language) with English (familiar language), combined with multimodal input (audio, images, videos, subtitles) over three learning phases. Participants are presented with increasingly complex Greek input as the phases progress: nouns in Phase 1, noun phrases (NPs) in Phase 2, and NPs + verbs in Phase 3. Learning in the proposed paradigm is evaluated through picture selection and...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación factores afectivos educación primaria y secundaria

Resumen:

Along with the evolution of positive psychology, research in noncognitive factors (e.g. enjoyment and boredom) has gradually flourished in second language (L2) education in recent years. However, previous studies have not examined how enjoyment, boredom, and motivational intensity concurrently predict the self-perceived L2 language proficiency (SPL2P) of younger L2 learners in the Chinese language learning context. To fill the gap, this study investigated 251 ( N = 251) L2 Chinese students from 13 elementary and secondary schools in New Zealand, a population that has scarcely been featured. Embracing the PROCESS macro software, the results of the moderated mediation model indicated that L2 motivational intensity significantly predicted SPL2P, and L2 enjoyment positively mediated the association between L2 motivational intensity and...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: inteligencia artificial chatbots expresión escrita

Resumen:

This mixed-methods study examined the impact of integrating generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) into English as a foreign language (EFL) writing classes on students’ writing performance and affective responses. Nearly 100 Chinese students from four parallel International English Language Testing System (IELTS) writing classes in a university foundation program participated in a 9-week trial, with half assigned to an experimental group and half to a control group. Both groups received theme-based instructions on IELTS Writing Task 2 through a three-stage writing process, while the experimental group also engaged with Kimi , a widely used GenAI chatbot in China, during and after class. Unlike previous studies, this research targeted lower-intermediate learners and aimed to offer a more nuanced understanding of GenAI’s role by...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: teoría sociocultural géneros textuales expresión escrita

Resumen:

This article investigates the effect of concept-based instruction (CBI), a pedagogy based on Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, on second language (L2) learners’ writing development. A quasi-experimental intervention lasting 16 weeks was conducted involving 88 first-year Chinese university students of English. The participants were assigned to three conditions: Full CBI (F-CBI) treatment, Partial CBI (P-CBI) treatment (i.e. CBI without peer–peer talk) and control. A definition task and two writing tasks (a narrative and an argumentative task) were used to measure students’ knowledge and understanding of genre and their writing performance, respectively. The results indicated that the F-CBI intervention generated significantly larger gains in learners’ understanding of genre as well as their overall writing performance than did the...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: interacción motivación estrategias de aprendizaje

Resumen:

Texto completo

Classroom relationships represent a complex and dynamic system, in which students’ relationships with teachers and peers are intertwined with each other. A person-centered approach was used to investigate how multiple characteristics of a good-quality relationship (i.e., validation, caring, and instrumental guidance) with teachers and peers combined to form English-as-a-foreign-language primary school students’ classroom relationships profiles. Four distinct profiles of classroom relationships were identified: Supportive, Teacher-oriented, Moderate, and Isolated. Whether students’ gender and English proficiency level significntly predicted their likelihood of belonging to each profile was tested...

Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas inteligencia artificial competencia digital

Resumen:

Along with the increasing popularity of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) technologies and the ongoing crisis of disinformation, the importance of digital literacies (DL) and preparing preservice English teachers to teach DL is well documented. Yet little research has explored DL in preservice language teacher education. This study addressed the gap by conceptualizing DL as both functional skills and social practices and developing an innovative GenAI-supported digital multimodal composing (DMC) approach to prepare preservice English teachers to teach DL. Multiple sources of data were collected in two language teacher education programs in Hong Kong with preservice English teachers from diverse backgrounds. A combination of thematic and multimodal analysis reveals positive responses and a range of benefits, challenges and...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos motivación educación superior

Resumen:

Student engagement has long been recognized as a vital predictor of academic success, but how it associates with control-value appraisals and academic emotions of Chinese undergraduates of English as a foreign language (EFL) is underexplored. This article hence invoked the control-value theory and investigated the general profile of Chinese undergraduates’ control-value appraisals, academic emotions and student engagement in English learning, and the interrelationships between the three constructs. Descriptive statistics of the questionnaire data revealed that the 323 undergraduate participants generally showed a moderate level of control-value appraisals and engagement in English learning; furthermore, they experienced a variety of academic emotions, with positive emotions as more frequently experienced than negative ones....

Positive psychology in action: Exploring the role of altruistic teaching in enhancing English reading comprehension among L2 learners
Javad Zare, Ahmad Al-Issa (2024)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: comprensión lectora aprendizaje colaborativo factores afectivos

Resumen:

The recent introduction of positive psychology (PP) to second language acquisition (SLA) has led to increased interest in researching the relationship between language learning and various positive emotions. Despite this, the concept of learner altruistic teaching has been relatively understudied, compared to other PP aspects. In particular, studies on learner altruistic teaching and English reading comprehension skill have been notably absent. To address this gap, this intervention study aimed to investigate whether learners’ altruistic teaching had a significant effect on their English reading comprehension skill. The study used a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design with a comparison group pretest–posttest experimental design. It involved 116 Iranian learners of English as a foreign language (EFL). The study included three...

Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: trabajo teórico

Temas: diferencias individuales factores afectivos motivación

Resumen:

This article explores intersections between two subfields of second language acquisition research: learner psychology (LP) and instructed second language acquisition (ISLA). Despite the common goal of discovering second language (L2) learning processes and products, the two inquiries have taken distinct paths. We argue that it is necessary to unite the knowledge and methods in the two inquiries, in order to answer theoretical and practical questions pertaining to classroom L2 teaching and learning. We make the case that the L2 classroom may be an ideal venue to explore the intersections of the two fields. Three intersections will be discussed. First, research can address the relationship between LP and interactional behaviors during classroom activities that have been investigated in ISLA research. Second, the roles of teachers, the...
