La psicología de los cuentos de hadas de Bruno Bettelheim en la enseñanza de Español como Lengua Extranjera
Cindia Miranda Rodríguez, Santiago Sevilla Vallejo (2022)
Revista pensamiento transformacional
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: propuesta didáctica

Temas: enseñanza a niños

Task anxiety, cognition and performance on oral tasks in L2 Spanish
Ángela Donate (2022)
Journal of Spanish Language Teaching
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

This article investigates the three-way interface between foreign language anxiety (FLA), cognition and performance in Spanish L2 oral tasks, and examines qualitatively the construct of task anxiety (TA) in relation to its three interconnected facets: affective, cognitive and behavioral. 51 low-proficiency university learners of L2 Spanish performed two narrative tasks manipulated in their cognitive demands. Results revealed TA negatively affected certain functions of learners' L2 cognition, especially at the attentional level and in word retrieval, highlighting the important role of L2 self-esteem in oral production tasks. This study advocates for a pedagogical approach that implements both curricular and individual aspects from a task-based language teaching perspective. It further emphasizes the importance of raising awareness of...

Foreign language anxiety in online college Spanish: Prevalence and effects on oral proficiency
Dianne Burke Moneypenny, Rosalie S. Aldrich (2022)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

Higher education has seen an increase in enrollment in online (OL) language courses. This study (n = 176) examined why students chose to enroll in OL Spanish courses and if foreign language classroom anxiety (FLCA) in OL classes affects overall oral proficiency. Sex differences and FLCA in online Spanish classes were also examined. Quantitative methods included an online survey and a third-party proficiency exam, Versant for Spanish Test. Findings suggest that students do not register for OL Spanish courses to avoid speaking; however, a majority of OL Spanish students appear to suffer from FLCA. These students reported being anxious about a variety of scenarios in their OL language courses including the tests, large class size, lack of understanding or remembering the course material, and making speaking mistakes. Analyses of oral...

Uncovering the key motivational factors behind students' enrollment in Spanish classes at institutions of higher education
Alan Parma & Amy Bustin (2021)
Journal of Spanish Language Teaching
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación

Resumen:

As language departments increasingly face enrollment concerns, empirical research can provide insights regarding students' reasons to study Spanish. Motivation has a key influence in learners' success and can be internal (e.g., an intrinsic desire or passion for learning) or external (e.g., imposed by others). This study examined motivational factors (motives) for students (N = 149) enrolled in the first required, last required, and first elective Spanish undergraduate courses. Seven motivational categories were examined: Integrative, Instrumental, Intrinsic, Ideal self, Ought-to self, Wish for language proficiency, and Political context. Results at all levels showed that Wish for language fluency was the principal motivator while factors stemming from external motivations were less important. Students in the elective course displayed...

Students' foreign language anxiety and self-efficacy beliefs across different levels of university foreign language coursework
Kelly Moore Torres, Jeannine E. Turner (2016)
Journal of Spanish Language Teaching
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

This study investigated differences in students' foreign language anxiety and foreign language self-efficacy related to skill-specific foreign language tasks (i.e., speaking, listening, reading, and writing) across five levels of university foreign language coursework. A total of 206 participants in 12 university Spanish classrooms (ranging from Beginning Spanish I to Intermediate Spanish II) were surveyed for this study. The findings revealed that students who have higher levels of skill-specific foreign language anxieties provided corresponding lower ratings on skill-specific foreign language self-efficacies. Analyses also revealed that students' ratings for foreign language anxiety for each foreign language-learning skill were not significantly different across the five levels of coursework. However, students' ratings of foreign...

Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: profesorado

Resumen:

This study focuses on understanding language teachers' lived experiences of their stressors and positive uplifts from a holistic perspective covering their professional lives in school, their personal lives beyond, and the connection between the two. The aim was to explore the nature of teachers' experiences of stress and how they spilled over from work into home domains. We also were keen to understand the dynamics of their experiences of stress and how their perception of daily stressors was related to their overall sense of wellbeing as well as their life and chronic stressors. The data were collected via a specially created app, which collected survey data and experience sampling method (ESM) data from language teachers across the globe. Teachers' wellbeing was investigated using the PERMA Profiler (Butler & Kern, 2016), their...

The interplay between corrective feedback timing and foreign language anxiety in L2 development
Ehsan Rassaei (2023)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación

Resumen:

Recent research indicated the effectiveness of immediate and delayed corrective feedback (CF) on second language (L2) learning. What is little known is the moderating effects of learner individual factors such as foreign language anxiety (FLA) on the efficacy of immediate and delayed CF. The primary aim of the present study is thus to investigate if learners? FLA can moderate the effectiveness of immediate and delayed feedback. To this end, 82 learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) were randomly assigned to two treatment conditions as well as a control group. During three treatment sessions, the participants performed storytelling tasks in groups of four and received either immediate or delayed metalinguistic feedback for the errors they made. Regarding the immediate feedback condition, each participant received...

Resumen:

Texto completo

At the turn of the new millennium, in an article published in Language Teaching Research in 2000, Dörnyei and Kormos proposed that "active learner engagement is a key concern" for all instructed language learning. Since then, language engagement research has increased exponentially. In this article, we present a systematic review of 20 years of language engagement research. To ensure robust coverage, we searched 21 major journals on second language acquisition (SLA) and applied linguistics and identified 112 reports satisfying our inclusion criteria. The results of our analysis of these...
