Investigating language learning strategies: Prospects, pitfalls and challenges
Mirosław Pawlak (2021)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar ✕

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: revisión bibliográfica

Temas: estrategias de aprendizaje

Resumen:

Texto completo

Major advances have been made in research on language learning strategies (LLS) since it was triggered by good language learner studies (e.g. Rubin, 1975). Numerous accounts of strategy use have been compiled, key classifications have been proposed, some progress has been made towards furthering our understanding of the complex relationship between LLS use and attainment, an array of factors impacting strategy use has been investigated, some evidence has been gathered for the beneficial role of strategies-based instruction, and new data collection tools have been developed (see e.g. Cohen, 2011; Cohen & Griffiths, 2015; Cohen & Macaro, 2007; Griffiths, 2018, 2019; Griffiths & Oxford,...

Revisiting ‘think aloud’ in language learner strategy research
Andrew D. Cohen, Isobel Kai-Hui Wang (2024)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar ✕

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: metodología de investigación

Resumen:

This article revisits the use of the term ‘think aloud protocols’ (TAP) as used in second language (L2) research studies as a means for collecting verbal report (VR) data dealing with language learner strategies (LLS). Given that there continue to appear L2 studies that use TAP without differentiating the actual type of VR that is involved, this study investigated the extent to which it makes a difference if the researchers fine-tune the types of VR responsible for yielding the given cognitive processing data. The study was conducted at the university level as part of an effort to investigate the dynamics of vocabulary strategy instruction (VSI) from different angles. Non-native-English-speaking developing teachers generated VR about the strategies that they selected when assuming the role of both tutor and student in one of six dyads...

Improvement of students’ self-directed learning readiness through problem-based English language learning in Korea
Insuk Han (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar ✕

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: aprendizaje autónomo

Resumen:

The current study investigated how problem-based English language learning influenced Korean secondary students’ self-directed learning readiness (SDLR). Based on the analysis of 78 students’ responses on the pre- and post-surveys, it was revealed that the students experienced significant increases in their SDLR in 18 out of 46 items, and many were related to learning strategy management, examination management, and time management. While male students showed an increase in five items, female students revealed an increase in 19 items, mostly related to learning strategy management, stress management, and assignment management. In the analysis of the relative significance of the change, the females revealed a more meaningful increase of their SDLR in seven items compared to the males. The items were focused on assignment management,...

Classroom Relationship Profiles: Links with English-as-a-Foreign-Language Students’ Academic and Social Goals and Self-Regulated Learning Strategy Use
Qingyao Dan, Barry Bai, Xuan Zang (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar ✕

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: interacción

Resumen:

Texto completo

Classroom relationships represent a complex and dynamic system, in which students’ relationships with teachers and peers are intertwined with each other. A person-centered approach was used to investigate how multiple characteristics of a good-quality relationship (i.e., validation, caring, and instrumental guidance) with teachers and peers combined to form English-as-a-foreign-language primary school students’ classroom relationships profiles. Four distinct profiles of classroom relationships were identified: Supportive, Teacher-oriented, Moderate, and Isolated. Whether students’ gender and English proficiency level significntly predicted their likelihood of belonging to each profile was tested...

Boredom in online English language classes: Mediating variables and coping strategies
Mirosław Pawlak, Ali Derakhshan, Mostafa Mehdizadeh (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar ✕

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

Although boredom has been the subject of increasing scrutiny in second language (L2) learning recently, very little is known about how this emotion can affect teachers and students involved in Covid-19 prompted online English education. To address this gap, through maximum variation sampling, this qualitative study surveyed the opinions of 34 teachers and 256 students from universities across Iran to find out which class mode (online versus physical classes) and course type (content-based versus skills-based courses) were more boring, and what – if any – coping strategies these individuals used to get over boredom. The majority of teachers and students deemed online classes more boring than traditional, in-person classes. While teachers regarded skills-based and content-based courses as equally boring, most students believed that...

Conceptualizing self-regulated reading-to-write in ESL/EFL writing and investigating its relationships to motivation and writing competence
Barry Bai, Jing Wang (2023)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar ✕

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

Self-regulated reading-to-write (R2W) can be portrayed as learners’ proactive learning of useful elements (e.g. content, rhetorical features, and conventions) from reading by using strategies, which is an effective mechanism connecting reading and writing, to improve their writing competence. In the present study, six major types of self-regulated R2W strategies, i.e. mining reading, writerly reading, cognitive strategies, purposive reading, recalling while writing, and peer revision reading that can contribute to writing competence were included in the proposed self-regulated R2W framework. Importantly, a self-regulated R2W scale was established to understand the impacts of four types of strategies. Participants were 458 primary students (9 to 13 years old, M = 10.12, SD = .62) in Hong Kong. They completed the self-regulated R2W...

‘My speech becomes just a voice, a picture’: Exploring language anxiety in Chinese as a second language learning in online environments
Xin Qi (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar ✕

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

This qualitative study explores learners’ perceptions of the sources of language anxiety in Chinese as a second language (L2) learning in online environments, and how they cope with it. Nine participants, all of whom experienced high levels of L2 anxiety, were selected from a group enrolled in synchronous online Chinese classes during the Covid-19 pandemic. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that learning languages online presents a unique anxiety-provoking situation, resulting in several distinctive sources of L2 anxiety, such as a lack of self-discipline, difficulty adjusting to the transition, fear of online exposure, unnatural online environment for interaction, etc. In response, learners employed a variety of strategies, such as snacking, reviewing...

The impact of future L2 selves and positive emotions on self-regulated writing strategies: A mixed method approach
Yabing Wang, Jian Xu, Huiyin Li (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar ✕

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación

Resumen:

While extensive research supported the facilitative role of motivation in general self-regulated learning (SRL) strategy use, its connection to writing-specific SRL strategy use remains underexplored. Furthermore, the exploration of the interplay between motivation and SRL strategy use in second or foreign (L2) writing was absent within the motivational-self system. Even less is known about the mechanism between motivational factors and SRL strategy use in L2 writing. This study aims to fill the gap by testing the mediating role of positive emotions (enjoyment, pride, and hope) between future L2 writing selves (ideal L2 self and ought-to L2 self) and SRL strategy use in the Chinese English as a foreign language (EFL) writing context with a mixed method design incorporating both quantitative and qualitative methods. Three hundred and...
