Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

In the present study, we developed and tested the psychometric properties of the Second or Foreign Language Boredom Coping Strategies Scale, an instrument for measuring language learners’ coping strategies in response to the experience of boredom. The research is based on a four-dimensional model of coping mechanisms, which includes the behavioral approach, cognitive approach, behavioral avoidance, and cognitive avoidance. Each factor comprises three subcomponents, which delineate the diverse strategies learners adopt to mitigate boredom in language learning contexts. The scale was tested using a sample of 363 learners of English as a foreign language at the tertiary level. The factorial structure was analyzed through confirmatory factor analysis and exploratory structural equation modeling to verify the construct validity of the...

Extending the efficacy of Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) in teaching reading strategies: A socio-cultural emotional perspective
Ali Amjadi, Seyed Hassan Talebi (2024)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: comprensión lectora

Resumen:

Implementing social-emotional learning skills into Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR), the current study intended to extend the efficacy of CSR for teaching reading strategies when applying it to students in rural areas from a working-class community. To this purpose, forty-four students who made the comparison and the experimental groups were taught reading strategies through CSR and ECSR (Extended Collaborative Strategic Reading), respectively. A reading comprehension test with different question types was given to the students as pretest and posttest, and an interview was given at the end of the study to investigate the perception of the students toward reading strategy instruction through CSR and ECSR. Analysis of data indicated that only the ECSR group improved significantly in overall reading comprehension, but the...

A self-regulation perspective on L2 grit development and its impact on language achievement
Hitoshi Mikami, Tadashi Shiozawa (2024)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: diferencias individuales

Resumen:

Texto completo

Evidence from recent studies has shown that sustained perseverance and passion for long-term goals in the domain of second language (L2) learning – a personality trait called L2 grit – is associated with various aspects of language learning, including positive psychological attributes (e.g. motivation, beliefs, and emotions), actions (e.g. learning efforts and strategy use), and achievement (e.g. course and task performance). Meanwhile, relatively little has been written about the mechanism through which such relationships emerge. Expanding upon L2 grit’s association with self-regulated learning (SRL) behaviors and SRL-related psychological variables, this study explores the development of L2...

The effect of vocal production on vocabulary learning in a second language
Michal Icht, Yaniv Mama (2022)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario

Resumen:

The Production Effect (PE) is a memory phenomenon, referring to memory advantage for produced items (read aloud) over non-produced items (read silently). Since vocalizing shows consistent memory benefits, it has been suggested as a mnemonic that can be used to assist vocabulary learning. The present study investigated the PE in L2 vocabulary learning and examined whether learning is durable over time. Hebrew speaking students learned new words in Esperanto, either by vocal production or by no-production. Retention interval varied between participants – from immediate, 1-week, and 2-weeks following the learning phase. The results showed a significant PE – a memory advantage for vocally produced over non-produced words across all learning intervals. Memory performance was higher in the immediate tests than in the delayed tests. The...

A retrodictive qualitative modeling study of complex and dynamic language learning motivation viewed as control, value and truth effectiveness
Jakub Bielak, Anna Mystkowska-Wiertelak (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación

Resumen:

The dynamics of second language learning motivation (L2 motivation), which depends on multiple intra-personal and contextual influences, is increasingly examined. As part of this research trend, we explore the usefulness of a global view of motivation – covering control, value and truth effectiveness – for tracing English majors’ motivational development spanning their entire learning histories. Viewing L2 motivation as a complex system, we employ complex dynamic systems theory and retrodictive qualitative modeling. We created a “blueprint” integrating diverse motivational forces under the three types of effectiveness. Control emerged as crucial as, in interaction with the others, it pushed the motivational system into qualitatively different states, particularly through feedback on progress and the (non-)compatibility of goal foci (...

A mixed methods approach to exploring grammar learning strategies in self-regulation task phases: Evidence from grounded theory and regression analysis
Mohammad Hassanzadeh, Mostafa Ranjbar (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: estrategias de aprendizaje

Resumen:

While research into various dimensions of language learning strategies has been thriving over the recent years, grammar learning strategies (GLS) have largely remained under-explored. The present mixed methods research aimed to explore GLS in the three stages of classroom grammar tasks, while striving to determine the sequence of GLS and their contribution to grammar proficiency. In the qualitative phase, 13 participants partook in stimulated recall and semi-structured interviews after completing consciousness-raising (CR) tasks. Then, the grounded theory (GT) methodology was applied to conceptualize a theoretical model. For the quantitative phase, a modified version of Pawlak’s Grammar Learning Strategy Inventory and a grammar proficiency test were administered to 249 participants. The theoretical model of GT indicated that learners...

Relationship Between Pre-Writing Task Perception and Post-Writing Feedback Handling: The Mediating Role of During-Writing Task Implementation Strategies and Moderating Role of Second Language Writing Proficiency
Yupeng Lin, Meihua Liu (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: expresión escrita

Resumen:

Second/foreign language writing consists of a cycle of three phases (i.e., forethought, performance, and reflection) that interact with each other. However, studies on the interaction of these different phases are limited. Self-regulated strategies are used and enacted differently across these phases of second/foreign language writing, forming sequential relationships within the strategic system. However, the interconnections among phase-specific strategies (especially the theoretically directional relationships across these three phases) remain underexplored. Combining structural equation modeling and thematic analysis, this study explored the impact of pre-writing task perception on post-writing feedback handling, with five during-writing task implementation strategies as mediators and second/foreign language writing proficiency as...
