The effects of web-based text structure strategy instruction on adult Chinese ELLs’ reading comprehension and reading strategy use
Zhihong Xu, Kausalai (Kay) Wijekumar, Qing Wang (2024)
Language Teaching Research

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: comprensión lectora

Resumen:

Underdeveloped reading comprehension skills can limit academic success; a particular challenge for English language learners (ELLs). The current study investigated whether a web-based text structure strategy, delivered via the Intelligent Tutoring of Structure Strategy (ITSS) program to adult Chinese ELLs, improved students’ use of reading strategies and/or overall reading comprehension. Using a quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group design, 207 adult Chinese ELLs from four classes were assigned to intervention or control groups. The intervention group utilized the ITSS to support their English reading instruction, whereas the control group was exposed to only traditional instruction. Our results indicate that the ITSS intervention had a statistically significant positive effect on adult Chinese ELLs’ reading comprehension ( β...

Understanding Chinese English-as-a-Foreign-Language Learners’ Self-Regulated Learning: Insights from Q Methodology
Ziqian Lin, Zhijie Wang, Bin Shen (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: estrategias de aprendizaje

Resumen:

Texto completo

From a social cognitive perspective, self-regulated learning is essentially and increasingly recognized as a complex and dynamic experience. The use of self-regulated learning strategies is also inherently subjective, shaped by individuals’ experiences, beliefs, learning styles, and environmental influences. Although existing research has explored self-regulated learning via a complex dynamic system theory lens, relevant studies that depart from a learner’s point of view and elucidate complexity and subjectivity in their understanding of self-regulated learning strategy use remain limited. Researching the complexity of self-regulated learning in second language acquisition aids in fostering a...

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

Learning a foreign language can be a stressful experience that can provoke anxiety and impede the acquisition of the language in question. In this regard, although there is a lack of studies conducted in foreign language classrooms that have specifically demonstrated relationships between cognitive emotional regulation strategies and anxiety, the apparent correlation between cognitive emotional regulation strategies and anxiety in diverse contexts underscores the necessity for further research to clarify this association and ascertain their applicability to foreign language anxiety. Moreover, it is essential to investigate how the type of education (i.e., bilingual and non-bilingual) affects this relationship. To address these research gaps, multivariate regression models were constructed for several dependent variables with the same...

Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: pragmática

Resumen:

This study used a pre-test post-test research design to investigate the role of explicit strategy instruction on Spanish English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ ability to write authentic email requests to faculty. Drawing on Taguchi’s (2018) classification of pragmatics learning strategies, the instructional intervention followed a strategy-based approach to help learners understand the form–function–context mapping of email requests in the academic context. A total of 110 naturally occurring email requests for action addressed to three faculty members were collected at two different times: as a pre-test (i.e. before engaging learners in the instructional period), and as a post-test (i.e. after learners’ participation in the treatment sessions). Learners’ email messages were analysed considering both their appropriateness of...

Use of motivational regulation strategies and its relations to motivational beliefs in a college English course context
Sha Luo, Zhengdong Gan (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación

Resumen:

While motivational regulation strategies (MRSs) both as a core facet of self-regulated learning and as a pedagogical issue have attracted increasing attention from researchers and practitioners, what motivational regulation strategies learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) or English as a second language (ESL) tend to use and how these strategies may be associated with learner motivational beliefs in English learning remain under-researched. To fill this research gap, this study aims to contribute to a holistic understanding of Chinese EFL students’ use of MRSs and its relations to English learning motivational beliefs. Data were collected from 638 non-English major undergraduate students through two self-report questionnaires in a College English Course context. Results showed that students reported high frequency use of...

Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: expresión escrita

Resumen:

This study examined the components of writing strategies employed in the story continuation writing task (SCWT) and investigated how these strategies related to different aspects of writing performance. Specifically, it adopted factor analyses to validate the strategy subscale of Ye et al.’s (2021) writing performance questionnaire and used structural equation modeling (SEM) to explore the relationship between strategy use and writing performance, as measured by the holistic writing scores and 11 textual indices. The data comprised 330 questionnaire responses and 330 SCWT essays produced by the same group of high school English as a Foreign Language learners selected through convenience sampling. Factor analyses identified three task-specific strategy components: reading_to_select , reading_to_organize , and content_developing . These...

Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: estrategias de aprendizaje

Resumen:

With the large increase in online English language learners, there is a need to explore how those learners practise self-regulated writing in such an autonomous learning context. This article reports on an exploratory study of self-regulated learning strategies used by two writing-proficiency groups (low and high) of Saudi English majors within an online context. Data were collected from a total of 50 (high proficiency = 23 and low proficiency = 27) students using video-stimulated recall of two online writing tasks. Quantitative analysis of the students’ stimulated recall data revealed that students in both proficiency groups used 11 self-regulated strategies to complete the two online writing tasks. Results also revealed a positive correlation between self-regulated learning strategy use and the students’ writing proficiency level....

Individual differences in self-regulated learning: Exploring the nexus of motivational beliefs, self-efficacy, and SRL strategies in EFL writing
Lin Sophie Teng (2024)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: estrategias de aprendizaje

Resumen:

This study examines the predictive effects of motivational beliefs and self-efficacy on multiple dimensions of self-regulated learning (SRL) strategies in English as a foreign language (EFL) writing. Undergraduate students (n = 389) were recruited voluntarily from four universities in mainland China. They were invited to complete a set of questionnaires to measure their motivational beliefs (extrinsic and intrinsic goal orientation, task value, and control of learning belief), self-efficacy (linguistic self-efficacy, performance self-efficacy, and self-regulatory efficacy) and SRL strategies (cognition, metacognition, social behavior, and motivational regulation). Multiple regression analyses revealed that motivational beliefs had significant predictive effects on SRL strategies; among which task value and intrinsic goal orientation...
