The relative effectiveness of immediate and delayed corrective feedback in video-based computer-mediated communication
Laia Canals, Gisela Granena, Yucel Yilmaz (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación

Resumen:

This study investigated the relative effectiveness of immediate and delayed corrective feedback on the acquisition of -ing/ -ed participial adjectives by Spanish English-as-a-foreign-language learners in video-based computer-mediated communication. Fifty-two participants took part in a communicative task in one of four groups (two experimental and two control). The immediate-feedback group received explicit corrective feedback during the task whereas the delayed-feedback group received the feedback 24 hours later by means of an edited video recording of the interaction. The effects of the feedback were measured through an oral production task and an untimed grammaticality judgment test. Although the results showed no differences between the two feedback timing groups and control participants on the grammaticality judgment test, both...

Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: cognición y procesamiento

Resumen:

This study examined the effects of working memory and topic familiarity on English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ oral performance from psycholinguistic perspective. Sixty-one sophomores majoring in English from a university in China were divided into high and low working memory capacity groups to perform two oral tasks of familiar and unfamiliar topics. The results demonstrated that working memory exerted significant effect on accuracy, fluency and overall grade, but no significant effect on syntactic or lexical complexity was found. Topic familiarity significantly affected lexical complexity, accuracy, fluency and overall grade, but syntactic complexity remained unaffected. Moreover, working memory and topic familiarity had significant interaction effects on fluency. Participants with high working memory capacity achieved the...

Effects of internal and external attentional manipulations and working memory on second language vocabulary learning
Yeu-Ting Liu, Hossein Nassaji, Wen-Ta Tseng (2024)
Language Teaching Research

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario

Resumen:

In light of mixed findings in existing input enhancement research, Issa and Morgan-Short in a 2019 article urged researchers to compare the relative effects of input enhancement that taps into learners’ attention to the external format of second language (L2) target forms (e.g. through capitalizing or boldfacing the forms) and input enhancement that taps into learners’ attention to the internal attributes of L2 target forms (e.g. via increasing the frequency of the forms). In response to this call, the study described in this article drew on a pretest-treatment–posttest-experimental-design to explore whether working memory (WM) capacity modulates the extent to which L2 learners benefit from input enhancement engaged by internal and external attentional manipulations for partially-acquired L2 vocabulary. Analyses of these learners’...

(L2) grit, emotions, and motivated learning behavior: The case of English majors in Hungary
Kata Csizér, Mirosล‚aw Pawlak, Ágnes Albert (2024)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: diferencias individuales

Resumen:

Although the number of studies into grit in second/foreign language (L2) learning is on the rise, available empirical evidence is still scant, particularly in relation to links between the two facets of (L2) grit (i.e. perseverance and interest), positive (i.e. enjoyment, curiosity) and negative (i.e. in-class and after-class boredom, anxiety) emotions as well as motivation. In addition, most research has been quantitative in nature and has mainly targeted Asian contexts. In order to fill these gaps, a mixed-methods study was undertaken among English majors and English student teachers in Hungary. It aimed to: (1) characterize the participants in terms of the variables under investigation, (2) identify their profiles in relation to general grit and L2 grit, and (3) determine the differences between the identified clusters with respect...

The effect of vocal production on vocabulary learning in a second language
Michal Icht, Yaniv Mama (2022)

Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario

Resumen:

The Production Effect (PE) is a memory phenomenon, referring to memory advantage for produced items (read aloud) over non-produced items (read silently). Since vocalizing shows consistent memory benefits, it has been suggested as a mnemonic that can be used to assist vocabulary learning. The present study investigated the PE in L2 vocabulary learning and examined whether learning is durable over time. Hebrew speaking students learned new words in Esperanto, either by vocal production or by no-production. Retention interval varied between participants – from immediate, 1-week, and 2-weeks following the learning phase. The results showed a significant PE – a memory advantage for vocally produced over non-produced words across all learning intervals. Memory performance was higher in the immediate tests than in the delayed tests. The...

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación

Resumen:

The dynamics of second language learning motivation (L2 motivation), which depends on multiple intra-personal and contextual influences, is increasingly examined. As part of this research trend, we explore the usefulness of a global view of motivation – covering control, value and truth effectiveness – for tracing English majors’ motivational development spanning their entire learning histories. Viewing L2 motivation as a complex system, we employ complex dynamic systems theory and retrodictive qualitative modeling. We created a “blueprint” integrating diverse motivational forces under the three types of effectiveness. Control emerged as crucial as, in interaction with the others, it pushed the motivational system into qualitatively different states, particularly through feedback on progress and the (non-)compatibility of goal foci (...

Configurational Effects of Grit, Mindset, and Engagement on Language Achievement: Insights from fsQCA Approach
Xuan Zhou, Mingce Huang, Patricia Nora Riget (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: diferencias individuales

Resumen:

Second language acquisition is a lengthy and complex process fraught with numerous obstacles and barriers. It requires learners to possess robust grit, adaptive mindsets, and active engagement to overcome the challenges encountered during the learning process. However, limited antecedent research has integrated the three factors into one framework and examined the configured joint effects on language achievement outcomes. Adopting a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA), 431 tertiary-level university students were recruited to complete grit, engagement, and mindset questionnaires, and their language achievement was assessed through the grades they attained on the College English Test Band 4. The results from the direct path analysis and fsQCA analysis led to two major findings. First, perseverance of effort and behavioral...

To correct or to cooperate: Mediational processes and L2 development
Matthew E. Poehner, Dmitri Leontjev (2020)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: teoría sociocultural

Resumen:

The present article argues for a conceptual distinction between corrective feedback and mediation that emphasizes the status of the latter not as an instructional practice but as a defining feature of human psychology (Vygotsky, 1987) that has direct implications for how instruction might be approached. Specifically, Sociocultural Theory (SCT) posits that humans are always and everywhere mediated, as individuals draw upon meanings and ways of thinking they have already internalized as well as those that are available in their immediate environment to regulate their actions. With regard to second language (L2) education, rather than exclusively focusing on learner independent performance or whether learners improve following application of a particular corrective feedback strategy, a view of learner performance as a mediated process...

Learning multiword items through dictation and dictogloss: How task performance predicts learning outcomes
Xi Yu, Frank Boers, Paul Tremblay (2025)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario

Resumen:

Texto completo

This article reports a quasi-experimental study which compared the effectiveness for multiword item learning of three listening-based activities: dictation, dictogloss, and answering text comprehension questions. In a dictation, students write down segments of text immediately after listening to them, whereas in dictogloss students try to reconstruct the text from memory. Chinese learners of English ( N = 142) first engaged in one of the three activities, then received the transcript of the text and used a different colour to make corrections to what they had written. The learners were given an unannounced immediate and a two-week delayed posttest concerning 10 expressions from the text. Both...

Development of second language speech fluency in foreign language classrooms: A longitudinal study
Keiko Hanzawa (2024)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar โœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: expresión oral

Resumen:

Although several researchers have demonstrated that foreign language (FL) learning experience has a limited effect on the short-term development of second language (L2) fluency, recent studies have suggested that learners can gain long-term (over one year) benefits from FL learning experiences. As a part of the present study, 50 Japanese university students were exposed to L2 learning experience over the course of one academic year to monitor its impact on L2 fluency measures (i.e. speed, breakdown, and repair fluency) in FL context. The relationship between the development of L2 fluency measures and learners’ learning experiences inside and outside the classroom was also investigated. The results showed a significant decrease in the length of between-clause and within-clause pauses that learners made. Furthermore, the correlational...
