Resumen:
This study compares eleven widely used machine learning algorithms to identify the most accurate and comprehensive method for assessing children's reading fluency. Our fluency framework integrates three key dimensions: accuracy in word decoding, reading speed (words per minute), and prosody, which captures appropriate pausing and intonation during reading. Audio recordings from 2nd and 3rd grade students across 144 Brazilian schools were transcribed using the advanced Whisper ASR system, enabling automated extraction of fluency features. The research objective was to determine which algorithm best predicts fluency, considering diverse evaluation setups including binary classification (...

Resumen:
Ontology and knowledge-based systems typically provide e-learning recommender systems. However, ontology use in such systems is not well studied in systematic detail. Therefore, this research examines the development and evaluation of ontology-based recommender systems. The study also discusses technical ontology use and the recommendation process. We identified multidisciplinary ontology-based recommender systems in 28 journal articles. These systems combined ontology with artificial intelligence, computing technology, education, education psychology, and social sciences. Student models and learning objects remain the primary ontology use, followed by feedback, assessments, and context...

Resumen:
The growing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in education has significantly influenced teachers' professional development. While AI offers substantial support for teaching practices and serves as a powerful instructional aid, it also places greater demands on teachers, prompting an urgent need for role transformation and skill enhancement. Therefore, the interplay among teachers' AI competency, technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK), and teaching performance has emerged as a critical area of research. This study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining questionnaire surveys with classroom observations, to assess the AI competency, TPACK levels, and teaching...

Resumen:
I argue that ChatGPT and other generative artificial intelligence tools pose three main threats to our current education systems, creating problems of measurement, information accuracy, and skill devaluation. But when we place these threats into historical context, we see that AI tools can also empower students and level the educational playing field. In classrooms from primary to tertiary and spanning all content areas, we can help our students become critical thinkers by using ChatGPT to comprehend texts, aggregate knowledge, and understand genre conventions in prose as well as programming. The aim is to help students leverage AI as a tool that they question and critique, advancing their...

Resumen:
The spread of easily accessible generative AI in the form of chatbots has impacted secondary education, but the effects of this are largely unknown. Previous studies have shown that using chatbots in a learning context can be both harmful or helpful depending on how they are used. While students are undoubtedly utilising this technology, there is scarce data on the extent, intention, or approach to its use, or what drives it. The present study builds upon the findings of a previous qualitative study, aiming to investigate and quantify students' use of generative AI for schoolwork. Through a survey sent to multiple upper secondary schools, we collected 1266 responses to analyse upper...

Resumen:
Currently, many generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools are being integrated into the educational technology landscape for instructors. Our paper examines the potential and challenges of using Large Language Models (LLMs) to code student-generated content in online discussions based on intended learning outcomes and how instructors could use this to assess the intended and enacted learning design. If instructors were to rely on LLMs as a means of assessment, the reliability of these models to code the data accurately is crucial. Employing a diverse set of LLMs from the GPT family and prompting techniques on an asynchronous online discussion dataset from a blended-learning bachelor-...

Resumen:
Large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT have shown promise in generating educational content, including questions. This study evaluates the effectiveness of LLMs in classifying and generating educational-type questions. We assessed ChatGPT's performance using a dataset of 4,959 user-generated questions labeled into ten categories, employing various prompting techniques and aggregating results with a voting method to enhance robustness. Additionally, we evaluated ChatGPT's accuracy in generating type-specific questions from 100 reading sections sourced from five online textbooks, which were manually reviewed by human evaluators. We also generated questions based on learning objectives and...

Resumen:
Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly integrating into design education, yet its effects on student learning processes remain empirically underexplored. This study reports a sequential mixed-methods investigation across a built-environment faculty at a research-intensive university, drawing on 24 faculty interviews, a survey of 32 instructors with regression modelling, and five clustered discussions involving 31 participants. Faculty accounts converge on a pattern in which AI amplifies existing differences in student readiness rather than producing uniform improvements. Consistent with cognitive offloading theory, students with stronger foundations use AI to extend reasoning...

Resumen:
The increasing accessibility of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools has led to their exploration and adoption in education. This qualitative study investigates the opportunities and challenges associated with integrating GenAI in education, and the strategies that encourage teachers and students to embrace GenAI in school settings. We recruited 76 educators in Canada to participate in a professional training seminar about GenAI and expressed their views through online surveys. Through written reflections, an optimistic outlook on GenAI's role in education was identified among the teachers, and some discipline-specific ideas were proposed. Thematic analysis reveals three key...

Resumen:
Scholars have indicated the importance of providing guidance and support for individual learners. In the past decades, most studies have developed adaptive learning systems to address this issue mainly based on students’ cognitive status, such as their learning achievements. However, several educators have pointed out the need to take learners’ affective status into account. Therefore, this study proposed an expert system approach by taking into account both the affective and cognitive status of individual learners. An adaptive learning system was implemented based on the proposed approach. In addition, an experiment was conducted in a fifth-grade Mathematics course to compare the learning...
