Resumen:
The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into language education has transformed how learners manage and direct their learning processes. Despite the growing adoption of AI-assisted tools, empirical understanding of their psychological and behavioral impacts remains incomplete. This study investigated how engagement in AI-assisted language learning environments shapes learners’ self-regulation, autonomy, and self-directed learning behaviors. Drawing on self-determination theory and Zimmerman’s model of self-regulated learning, the research employed a quantitative design with data collected from 736 Chinese university students using validated questionnaires measuring AI engagement, self-regulation, self-directed learning, and learner autonomy. Structural equation modeling (SEM) and correlational analyses were conducted...

Resumen:
This study investigated the differential effects of implicit and explicit instruction of refusal strategies in English and whether and how the impacts of instruction methods interact with learners’ working memory capacity (WMC). 78 learners of English were assigned to three groups (explicit, implicit, and control). Implicit instruction was operationalized through input enhancement and provision of recast. In the explicit instruction group, participants received description and exemplification of refusal strategies and were provided with explicit corrective feedback. Prior to the treatment, all participants took WMC test, Discourse Completion Test (DCT) and completed a pragmatics comprehension questionnaire (CQ). Results revealed that explicit instruction was more effective than implicit instruction for both production and...

Resumen:
Collaborative writing is a pedagogical activity increasingly used in second language education. Despite the increased research on L2 students’ participation in collaborative writing, scant attention has been paid to student engagement in project-based collaborative writing and the possible engagement changes. This article reports on a longitudinal case study investigating the changes in student engagement of a group of five Chinese EFL undergraduates in project-based collaborative writing. The analysis of the data gathered by observations of group interactions, interviews, and student texts reveals three patterns of engagement changes: from active collaborators to ‘team escapers’, from a supporter to a ‘free rider’, and unchanged dedicated writers. The findings are discussed concerning the factors that could account for the engagement...

Resumen:
The main goal of many students of English as a foreign language (EFL) is to be fluent in the target language, i.e. to be capable to transfer their thoughts smoothly and easily in different contexts. The present study examines the effect of pedagogic intervention on enhancing speech fluency in EFL using a pretest – immediate posttest – delayed posttest design. Two groups of 32 EFL students at a University in Iran took part in the study, receiving the same amount of instruction (18 hours over 18 weeks). The Control group listened to / viewed authentic audio recordings and movies in English, discussed their contents, and completed a variety of speaking skills tasks but received no fluency training. The Experimental group spent part of the time on fluency strategy training, encouraging the memorization, repetition, and retelling of the...

Resumen:
The significance of reflective practice (RP) has been widely recognized in both general education and language education. The past years have witnessed an exponential growth of studies in examining how technology can be utilized to promote teachers’ RP and video-based RP has been extensively reported as a powerful tool for teacher learning in many educational contexts. While existing literature has documented the potential benefits that student teachers may reap from video-based RP, there is a lack of attention to the complex interplay between the process of their RP and the contextual factors in their situated learning environment. This article reports on a study which aims to promote video-based RP among student teachers in a pre-service language teacher education course in Hong Kong. Drawing on data from post-course interviews with...

Resumen:
Engaging in productive forms of classroom talk has been shown to positively impact students’ thinking and language exposure. To maximize the effects of classroom talk on students who learn English as a second language (ESL) and to create more learning opportunities by leveraging the affordances of dialogic teaching in enabling interthinking, this study set out to explore the influence of asynchronous online talk on students’ thinking through a micro-blogging tool, Padlet. Twenty-five students from a local secondary school were recruited. They were asked to post their views on current news articles and conduct dialogues with one another through the commenting function. After the discussion, the...

Resumen:
Macaro has stated that the choice between a monolingual, immersive, target language-only pedagogy versus a non-immersive, multilingual pedagogy is ‘probably the most fundamental question facing second language acquisition (SLA) researchers, language teachers, and policymakers’. Recognizing that prior empirical work on monolingual versus multilingual approaches has primarily been (1) descriptive, (2) in the context of English as a second or foreign language, and (3) very short term, often with one brief treatment, this intervention study examines the effectiveness of use of the L1/non-target language in the L2 classroom in a quasi-experimental, 10-week study examining French, a commonly learned foreign language, and Arabic, a less commonly learned foreign language, at beginning levels of proficiency in a community-based setting with 25...

Resumen:
In this article we argue, in the context of the current dominance of the performative and instrumental drives characterizing the accountable university, that language and intercultural communication education in universities should also be humanistic, addressing ‘discomforting themes’ to sensitize students to issues of human suffering and engage them in constructive and creative responses to that suffering. We suggest that arts-based methods can be used and illustrate this with an intercultural telecollaboration project created in response to the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020. In this way language and intercultural communication education can become a site of personal and social transformation albeit modest and piecemeal as part of a longer process. Through arts-based methodologies and pedagogies of discomfort, Argentinian and US...

Resumen:
Recent work in the field of second language (L2) learning and teaching has aimed for improved representativeness by including older adult participants. Findings to date suggest not only that it is perfectly possible to learn a new L2 late in life, but also that, compared with younger samples, third-age learners’ success may be less dependent on the nature of the instructional approach they are exposed to. Whereas the predictive power of language learning aptitude in young adults’ instructed L2 learning has been amply demonstrated, we know very little about language aptitude as a predictor of late-life learners’ L2 achievement. The present study addressed these issues by comparing the...

Resumen:
This study examines how language teacher identity shapes technology integration through the lens of the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge-language teacher identity framework. A mixed-methods design was employed, involving survey data from 320 university foreign-language teachers and qualitative data from interviews, observations, and journals with 30 participants. Quantitative results showed that pedagogical beliefs and self-efficacy significantly predicted Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge levels. Qualitative findings revealed that identity conflicts, especially tensions between traditional roles and innovation demands, often constrained technology use, despite high confidence or competence. By foregrounding identity as a mediating mechanism, the study positions the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge-...
