Resumen:
This study investigates the impact of an extensive reading program on the English learning motivation of young middle-school learners of English as a foreign language, utilizing the self-determination theory framework. Eighty-one Grade 7 students participated in a semester-long extensive reading program designed to provide supportive conditions by allowing students to select reading materials that matched their proficiency levels and personal interests. Employing a mixed-methods approach, quantitative data were collected through pre- and post-motivation questionnaires measuring intrinsic motivation, external regulation, introjected regulation, and identified regulation, whereas qualitative data were obtained from student interviews and teacher focus groups. This study identified a multi-factor structure of motivation. It also revealed...

Resumen:
Previous studies demonstrated that the continuation task has great language learning potential and that various task-related factors may affect the extent to which the potential can be exploited (e.g. Wang & Wang, 2015). This study investigates the effect of one understudied factor, the linguistic complexity of the input text, on English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ alignment, writing fluency, and writing accuracy in the continuation task. Two comparable groups of Chinese undergraduate EFL learners read and continued a simplified and unsimplified version of the same incomplete story whose linguistic complexity matched and exceeded their production ability, respectively. Compared to the unsimplified version, the simplified version resulted in more automatic alignment and greater improvement in writing fluency and accuracy...

Resumen:
Teachers and scholars argue that willingness to communicate is crucial to language learning, but many language learners are reluctant to engage in such communication, in or out of class. In addition, much of the existing research on willingness to communicate is based on English language learners, but there are meaningful motivational and structural differences in English learning versus learning languages other than English. The purpose of the present study was to examine the impact of classroom social climate, language mindset, and academic emotions (i.e. anxiety, boredom, enjoyment, and pride) on second language willingness to communicate (L2WTC) in and out of class among 547 undergraduate students learning languages other than English in the United States. Analysis using structural equation modeling indicated that the emotions of...

Resumen:
One of the main reasons for studying a foreign language is communicating with others, but many students do not feel confidently enough when trying to develop their speaking skills. Among adolescents’ frequent activities are that of listening to music while paying attention to song lyrics. We hypothesize that these musical experiences could influence their speaking skills. The present study aims to consider different factors that could influence students’ speaking proficiency. Among these factors, students’ emotional understanding, their willingness to communicate in a FL and their musical experience are considered. One hundred and twenty-four students of English as a foreign language (EFL) in the fourth year of Secondary Education from three different high schools in Spain took part in the study. Oral data were collected through...

Resumen:
This study investigates the effect of personal investment in the form of learner-generated content (LGC) on the lexical recall of beginning-level learners of Chinese. The study employed a 2 × 2 repeated-measures design with content at two levels – teacher-generated content or TGC, and learner-generated content or LGC – and time at two levels (immediate, delayed). Quantitative results were triangulated with qualitative thematic analyses of follow-up interviews. The study was conducted at an Australian university and aimed to identify a way of modifying current intentional vocabulary learning activities to increase learner investment in the learning process and improve retention. Participants completed two versions of a picture description activity that was commonly used to introduce and practice new vocabulary in the program. The first...

Resumen:
This qualitative case study investigates how second language (L2) student writers’ knowledge of grammar interacts with their experiences with academic transition. In particular, the study focuses on academically transitioning L2 student writers’ uptake of systemic functional grammar (SFG), which conceptualizes and explicitly explains language as a social semiotic resource for meaning making. The 14 L2 students involved in the study were transitioning to an informative writing course offered by a university in China. The data sources included interviews with the students and the students’ writing pieces and reflections, and were grounded in a thematic analysis. The study shows that the students experienced academic challenges. However, with their improved uptake of SFG, the students were able to overcome the contextual complexity of...

Resumen:
Although digital multimodal composing (DMC) is receiving increasing attention in language classrooms, the extent to which it contributes to students’ writing practices is controversial. In order to understand the affordances of DMC compared to traditional monomodal writing in school contexts, it is pertinent to compare DMC and traditional writing using academic integrated-skills tasks. The current study aims to investigate the relationship between the quality of Korean high school students’ multimodal composing and that of the same students’ traditional monomodal writing, as well as content and language alignment. Thirty-one Korean high school students carried out a summary-reflection task through DMC and traditional monomodal writing. After reading a short fable by Aesop, students summarized and reflected on the text. While students...

Temas: feedback/retroalimentación
Resumen:
This study investigates the written feedback practices of Cambodian university teachers of English, drawing on 390 student journals and interviews with 11 instructors at a public university. Teacher feedback was dominated by grammar-focused, direct correction, influenced by student expectations for comprehensive error marking, heavy teaching loads, and limited institutional guidance. At the same time, many teachers described feedback as encouragement and emphasized the emotional support they hoped to provide, revealing a tension between their relational intentions and the predominantly form-focused practices. This pattern reflected not only pedagogical beliefs but also the institutional, cultural, and evaluative conditions that made surface-level correction the most feasible and professionally legible option. While these dynamics echo...

Resumen:
Recent research shows that musical training improves children’s development of oral and aural skills. This study focuses on developing and testing a methodological framework (Music as a Medium of instruction, MMI) in English language teaching (ELT) by contrasting MMI and gamification methodologies with the participation of 22 Spanish children all born in 2008. The differences in progression between participants with and without previous instrumental training are also discussed. Generalized linear model procedures were used for each outcome variable (listening comprehension and oral production skills) to investigate the effect of independent variables (MMI vs. gamification; students with music training vs. learners without music training). Results revealed that students of the MMI group had significantly higher scores than the...
