Resumen:
This study investigated how repeated occurrences of novel words and the corresponding number of first-language in-text glosses influenced novel words processing and learning outcomes during second-language reading. Using eye-tracking, 48 college students in China read a 4,693-word graded reader. With 2 balanced versions, 24 words (12 glossed and 12 non-glossed) occurring 1 to 7 times served as target words. Results showed that, first, processing times of target words were shorter in the gloss condition, and combined processing times of target words plus glosses were shorter than the times of non-glossed target words; second, processing times of target words in two conditions showed different trajectories across repeated occurrences, whereas processing times of first-language glosses remained relatively constant; and third, first-...

Resumen:
Second language (L2) writing research has demonstrated that young learners discuss linguistic issues, make use of feedback, and show a generally positive disposition toward writing tasks. However, many issues deserve further investigation. Regarding task implementation, few studies have been conducted with young learners writing individually, and few have compared different feedback types. Also, the focus of analysis has mostly been placed on students’ discussions; little is known about aspects such as draft quality and task motivation. To address these gaps, draft quality and task motivation were measured in 75 learners (aged 10–12 years) engaged in a three-stage writing task. They were divided into a task repetition group (n = 21), a group that received feedback via direct corrections (n = 30), and a group that received feedback via...

Resumen:
This study investigates the effect of task choice for Chinese learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) on pragmatic performance in producing, processing, and negotiating refusal speech acts during interactive role-plays involving refusals to requests and invitations. Task choice was manipulated by varying the degree of cognitive autonomy support provided in generating the content of refusals, resulting in two distinct task conditions. In the ‘non-constraint’ condition, learners independently brainstormed refusal content, whereas in the ‘constraint’ condition, they formulated refusals following predetermined scripts provided by the researcher. Refusal performance was analysed across three dimensions: pragmatic knowledge, processing, and interaction. The findings reveal that task choice exerted a mixed effect on these dimensions...

Resumen:
Digital literacy plays a crucial role in language learning. However, the relationship between digital literacy and engagement in English as a foreign language (EFL) learning remains unclear. Furthermore, the factors that moderate this link are not well understood. This study explored the connection between digital literacy and learning engagement among EFL learners, with particular attention to the moderating role of teacher support, as framed by social support theory. A total of 1,582 secondary school students from China participated in the research, providing self-reported data on digital literacy, learning engagement, teacher support, and demographic information. Multiple regression analysis revealed that after controlling for age, gender, and socioeconomic status, digital literacy positively predicted engagement in EFL learning....

Resumen:
Model texts have been widely recognized as an effective feedback instrument in enhancing second-language (L2) writing. Recent advances in generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), capable of producing humanlike text in response to user prompts, offer an accessible and efficient alternative for generating customized model texts tailored to L2 learners’ specific goals and proficiency levels. Despite this potential, little empirical research has examined L2 students’ practice and perceptions of leveraging GenAI for model text creation to support their revision. To address this gap, this study follows a process approach to investigate students’ prompting strategies to elicit AI-generated model texts, their noticing and incorporation of the model text features, and their perceptions of this process. Data were collected from 12 university...

Resumen:
The relationship between foreign language anxiety (FLA) and foreign language enjoyment (FLE) experienced during a creative collaborative oral English-as-a-foreign-language task, and the relationships between FLE/FLA and task speech fluency were investigated. The task was performed by mid-intermediate/high-intermediate English learners ( N = 43) in groups and culminated in 2-minute monologues by every participant, the breakdown (the ratio and length of mid- and end-AS unit pauses) and speed (mean length of run, articulation rate, and phonation time ratio) utterance fluency of which was measured. The relationship between FLA and FLE fluctuated between task parts, form negligible to medium-strong...

Resumen:
Considering the contribution of intelligent personal assistant (IPA) platforms to English as a foreign language (EFL) speaking courses and the insufficiency of research in this regard, the current study applied a sequential explanatory mixed-methods approach to explore the impact of Google Assistant, an IPA platform, on EFL learners’ International English Language Testing System (IELTS) speaking test marks and their fluency, comprehensibility, and accentedness. Two intact classes at a language institute were chosen and randomly assigned to an IPA class with 20 EFL learners and a non-IPA class with 23 EFL learners. The IPA learners interactively and individually communicated with Google Assistant by giving commands/requests/questions, and the non-IPA learners communicated the same commands/requests/questions with their peers...

Resumen:
Although formative assessment has been gaining increasing importance, most of the previous research focuses more on how formative assessment affects the cognitive aspects of students’ learning process and less on the emotional aspects. This research aims to explore whether formative assessment can reduce second-language students’ writing anxiety and how different types of formative assessment achieve the results. The researcher designed a writing course according to Black and Wiliam’s theory of formative assessment, and integrated self-assessment, peer assessment, and teacher conferencing into a 17-week teaching schedule. By adopting a mixed-methods approach, the researcher measured second-language students’ writing anxiety before and after the program, and collected students’ perceptions on self-assessment, peer assessment, and...

Resumen:
Collaborative writing is a pedagogical activity increasingly used in second language education. Despite the increased research on L2 students’ participation in collaborative writing, scant attention has been paid to student engagement in project-based collaborative writing and the possible engagement changes. This article reports on a longitudinal case study investigating the changes in student engagement of a group of five Chinese EFL undergraduates in project-based collaborative writing. The analysis of the data gathered by observations of group interactions, interviews, and student texts reveals three patterns of engagement changes: from active collaborators to ‘team escapers’, from a supporter to a ‘free rider’, and unchanged dedicated writers. The findings are discussed concerning the factors that could account for the engagement...

Resumen:
Research in language learning indicates that process drama (PD), an educational approach where students and teachers work in and out of role to explore themes and issues, can be well suited to the Japanese higher education (HE) context. Despite the benefits highlighted in the literature, PD remains a niche approach to language teaching and learning, with a limited number of practitioners in Japan. This study seeks to uncover language teachers’ experiences of becoming Process Drama Practitioners (PDPs) and using and sharing PD as an English language teaching approach in Japanese HE. Data were collected via in-depth interviews with six experienced PDPs. The findings indicate that prior positive experiences with drama was an encouraging factor of the adoption and self-directed initial use of PD in their teaching practices. Positive...
