This article investigates the effect of concept-based instruction (CBI), a pedagogy based on Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, on second language (L2) learners’ writing development. A quasi-experimental intervention lasting 16 weeks was conducted involving 88 first-year Chinese university students of English. The participants were assigned to three conditions: Full CBI (F-CBI) treatment, Partial CBI (P-CBI) treatment (i.e. CBI without peer–peer talk) and control. A definition task and two writing tasks (a narrative and an argumentative task) were used to measure students’ knowledge and understanding of genre and their writing performance, respectively. The results indicated that the F-CBI intervention generated significantly larger gains in learners’ understanding of genre as well as their overall writing performance than did the...

Resumen:
Emotional disengagement has attracted considerable attention in educational research, particularly research on online learning environments. Negative emotions can narrow learners’ attentional focus and suppress spoken output, making it difficult for teachers to gauge students’ actual oral abilities. This study investigates whether real-time recognition of learners’ facial emotions, combined with targeted questioning strategies, can foster more positive affect during synchronous online second language (L2) classes. Using a multitask convolutional neural network (MTCNN) for face detection and the VGGFace model for expression classification, we captured seven emotions from 61 Chinese undergraduates during one-on-one online interactions. Each teacher question was coded for type, mood, and subject pronoun. The results extend research on...

Resumen:
Translingual pedagogies have been proposed and implemented to respond to the increasing linguistic and cultural diversity in today’s classrooms. However, the findings of translingual pedagogies on English as an additional language (EAL) writing vary from facilitating to undermining teaching and learning. To understand the empirical landscape of this young and fast-growing research area, I systematically reviewed 62 studies with a research synthesis method to explore what translingual activities have been implemented and how they have impacted EAL writing teaching and learning (including both K-12 and post-secondary contexts). The findings reveal that various translingual activities, such as self-reflective writing and literacy narrative, have been enacted in EAL writing teaching and learning. These activities have been practiced in...

Resumen:
Argumentative writing has long been recognized as challenging for English second language (L2) writers yet central to their academic success in educational settings. This article investigates the effectiveness of a writing instructional enrichment program informed by diagnoses from dynamic assessment (DA) in promoting L2 learners’ argumentative writing abilities. Grounded in Vygotskian Sociocultural Theory, DA introduces mediation into the assessment procedure, so that learner emerging abilities are diagnosed through observing their responsiveness to mediation when difficulties arise. In this study, prior to and following the instructional programs, a three-step, interactionist DA procedure was...

Resumen:
Globalization and technological advancements have expanded human interaction and mobility, leading to increased multilingualism and multiculturalism. In response, English as a foreign language (EFL) teaching approaches have shifted from English-medium instruction (EMI) toward more multilingual approaches, including translanguaging. As a flexible pedagogy, translanguaging has gained growing attention in educational research. Accordingly, this study, an abridged version of a doctoral dissertation (Ceyhan Bingöl, 2024), conducted at the tertiary level in Türkiye, investigates whether there is a significant difference in the paragraph writing performance of English language learners exposed to a pedagogical translanguaging-integrated pre-writing stage and an English-only pre-writing stage in an EMI context at the tertiary level in Türkiye...

Resumen:
This article discusses, from a sociocognitive perspective, the integration of usage-based linguistics (UBL) models in favor of conversation analysis (CA) for second language acquisition (SLA). On this basis, it presents a pedagogical approach, viz. role-based interaction analysis (RBIA) for foreign language learning (FLL), by scaffolding, tracking and measuring learners’ behaviors of learning spoken grammatical and pragmatic features in intertextual affordances. Two groups were designated randomly as the experimental group (n = 30) and the comparison group (n = 32) to examine their uptake of the targeted features via explicit and implicit RBIA (i.e. two different ways of learning/processing in role-based interaction) respectively. Results showed: (1) there were significant differences between the two groups in the learning of...

Resumen:
This article aims to explore second language (L2) teachers’ attitudes to working with multilingual refugee learners in the context of a sudden shift towards an increasingly multilingual environment caused by the influx of Ukrainian refugee children in 2022 to Polish schools. The teachers have been prepared to teach predominantly monolingual classes and have not obtained any training to meet the needs of migrant and multilingual learners; thus, they had to rely on their personal resources facing this suddenly increasingly multilingual and multicultural environment. A cross-sectional survey study was designed to identify how attitudes of teachers of English and Polish as a foreign language (n = 70) developed towards teaching multilingual refugee learners and to what extent these correlated with teacher Openness to Experience,...

Resumen:
Self-regulated learning (SRL) is crucial to online language learning. Previous studies have shown that learners’ self-efficacy, task value, and SRL strategies improve SRL in online language learning contexts. However, how self-efficacy and task value affect different types of online SRL strategies is understudied. This study investigated the determinants of different types of online SRL strategies in online language learning courses to determine whether task value mediated self-efficacy and online SRL strategies. A total of 425 international university students who studied online Chinese language courses were recruited to complete self-report questionnaires measuring self-efficacy, task value and four types of online SRL strategies. Structural equation modelling showed that self-efficacy had significantly direct and positive effects...

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario
Resumen:
This article reports a quasi-experimental study which compared the effectiveness for multiword item learning of three listening-based activities: dictation, dictogloss, and answering text comprehension questions. In a dictation, students write down segments of text immediately after listening to them, whereas in dictogloss students try to reconstruct the text from memory. Chinese learners of English ( N = 142) first engaged in one of the three activities, then received the transcript of the text and used a different colour to make corrections to what they had written. The learners were given an unannounced immediate and a two-week delayed posttest concerning 10 expressions from the text. Both...
