Resumen:
Adopting a quasi-experimental design, this study investigated the effects of motivational interventions on second language (L2) willingness to communicate (WTC), self-confidence, and anxiety over a period of 27 weeks. A total of 391 Chinese junior secondary students were assigned to four instructional conditions: Instruction incorporating no motivational strategies (control condition), instruction supported by experience-related motivational strategies (Intervention 1), instruction utilizing vision-related motivational strategies (Intervention 2), and instruction drawing on experience-related and vision-related motivational strategies (Intervention 3). The effects of the interventions were assessed through measures administered at three timepoints to track changes in participants’ WTC, self-confidence, and anxiety. A combination of...

Temas: aula invertida/flipped learning
Resumen:
This study investigates the effects of the flipped classroom approach on five aspects of written communicative competence of learners of English as a foreign language (EFL): lexis, syntax, cohesion, pragmatics, and discourse. It experimented on two groups of Chinese undergraduates in a regular college English course, using a flipped learning approach on one group and a traditional lecture approach on the other. The results from a pre-test and post-test revealed that the flipped approach had differential effects on the aforementioned five sub-competencies. More specifically, the flipped group’s overall performance was better than the control group in the post-test, indicating an overall positive role of the flipped approach on EFL learners’ development of communicative competence. However, significant group differences were found only...

Resumen:
The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) writing tools in second language (L2) academic writing presents both opportunities and challenges for medical education. This study employed a SWOT (strengths–weaknesses–opportunities–threats) analysis to examine medical students’ perspectives on using AI writing tools in their academic writing practice. Forty-two medical students from a major Iranian university participated in the study, providing weekly reflections and a final SWOT analysis over a 15-week academic writing course. Thematic analysis revealed that AI writing tools offer significant strengths in linguistic skill development, particularly in academic vocabulary enhancement, sentence improvement, and grammar and proofreading. However, weaknesses such as over-reliance on AI, lack of contextual understanding, and occasional...

Temas: AICLE/CLIL
Resumen:
This study examines the effectiveness of content and language integrated learning (CLIL) in primary school English teaching, focusing its impact on the English learning ability and interest of lower-grade students. Two hundred and forty first-grade students were selected from three primary schools in Shenzhen (115 in the experimental group and 125 in the control group) for a one-week intervention. Results showed that students in the experimental group significantly outperformed those in the control group in terms of English learning ability, maintaining a stable advantage across three tests. Additionally, the experimental group’s learning interest increased significantly from pre-test to post-...

Resumen:
Although boredom has been the subject of increasing scrutiny in second language (L2) learning recently, very little is known about how this emotion can affect teachers and students involved in Covid-19 prompted online English education. To address this gap, through maximum variation sampling, this qualitative study surveyed the opinions of 34 teachers and 256 students from universities across Iran to find out which class mode (online versus physical classes) and course type (content-based versus skills-based courses) were more boring, and what – if any – coping strategies these individuals used to get over boredom. The majority of teachers and students deemed online classes more boring than traditional, in-person classes. While teachers regarded skills-based and content-based courses as equally boring, most students believed that...

Temas: translingüismo
Resumen:
Translanguaging has thrived as a pedagogy for second language (L2) acquisition because of its potential in maximizing L2 learners’ communicative repertoire. However, limited attention has been paid to how translanguaging can influence L2 speaking within the framework of task-based language teaching (TBLT). This study explored how different language use (i.e., L2 only and translanguaging) in collaborative pre-task planning contributed to L2 learners’ subsequent monologic speaking performance, as measured by complexity, accuracy, fluency (CAF), and idea units. The planning behaviours were also examined to offer explanations for the differences in learners’ speaking performance. Altogether 72 undergraduate students from a Chinese university voluntarily participated in this study. The results showed that translanguaging planning...

Resumen:
The present study aimed to bridge the gap in understanding the effects of captioned viewing on incidental vocabulary learning by using a forest plot to illustrate the influence of word-related factors and learner-related factors. Data were collected from 67 university students at a Chinese university. The results highlighted the significant effect of captioned viewing on incidental vocabulary learning and revealed the varied roles of both word- and learner-related factors in this process. Specifically, the study found that word frequency, word relevance, vocabulary breadth, phonological working memory, complex working memory, and English proficiency all play significant roles in vocabulary acquisition. These findings provide deeper insights into the relative value of captioned viewing for incidental vocabulary learning and identify...

Resumen:
This study examines how language teacher identity shapes technology integration through the lens of the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge-language teacher identity framework. A mixed-methods design was employed, involving survey data from 320 university foreign-language teachers and qualitative data from interviews, observations, and journals with 30 participants. Quantitative results showed that pedagogical beliefs and self-efficacy significantly predicted Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge levels. Qualitative findings revealed that identity conflicts, especially tensions between traditional roles and innovation demands, often constrained technology use, despite high confidence or competence. By foregrounding identity as a mediating mechanism, the study positions the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge-...

Resumen:
While previous research has investigated teacher oral feedback practices and their influences on student learning, little research has examined how students interpret and engage with teacher feedback, which is critical to the feedback effectiveness and the success of learning and performance. According to Ellis, student engagement is clearly defined as the ways that students respond to the feedback, which can be cognitive, behavioral, and affective. Drawing upon students’ oral presentations together with teacher oral feedback, semi-structured interviews, stimulated recalls, reflective accounts, and PowerPoint (PPT) slides for the oral presentations, this case study investigates three undergraduates’ cognitive, behavioral, and affective engagement with teachers’ oral feedback provided on in-class oral presentations in an English as a...

Resumen:
The interconnectedness of reading and writing necessitates a dynamic approach to learning, particularly for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Self-regulated reading-to-write (SR-R2W) emerges as a promising approach, empowering EFL learners to consciously integrate reading and writing to address writing weaknesses and enhance writing proficiency. However, individual differences in EFL learners’ self-regulated R2W and writing strategy use remain largely unexplored. This study proposed a revised self-regulated writing (RSRW) framework by integrating SR-R2W into the existing self-regulated writing framework. Building on this framework, the study identified distinct SR-R2W and RSRW profiles and examined their associations with English reading, writing, and general performance, as well as motivational beliefs. Participants were...
