Resumen:
To contribute to the discourse on ways to revitalize world language education, this study explored, through the lens of program evaluation, the effect of academic and nonacademic relationships on language majors’ choice of their major, their other motivations, and the nature of career-related knowledge and experiences they value. To this end, the study used a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, including a web-based survey ( N = 80) and group interviews (n = 12). Participants were undergraduate students enrolled in a modern language program and joint-degree programs in language + business and language + health. Analysis revealed statistically significant differences among the three groups of students in the influence of college professors on their major choice, the reasons for choosing their major, and the types of desired...

Self-determination theory is one of the most established motivational theories both within second language learning and beyond. This theory has generated several mini-theories, namely: organismic integration theory, cognitive evaluation theory, basic psychological needs theory, goal contents theory, causality orientations theory, and relationships motivation theory. After providing an up-to-date account of these mini-theories, we present the results of a systematic review of empirical second language research into self-determination theory over a 30-year period ( k = 111). Our analysis of studies in this report pool showed that some mini-theories were well-represented while others were underrepresented or absent from the literature. We also examined this report pool to note trends in research design, operationalization, measurement,...

Resumen:
Although Csikszentmihalyi’s concept of flow was introduced 50 years ago, it was not until 2003 when Egbert established a research stream exploring flow in language learning. Since then, empirical studies have increasingly used the construct to gain a better understanding of learners’ optimal experiences. To understand the methodological characteristics of research during this period, we conducted a systematic review of 123 empirical studies on flow in second language (L2) learning published between 2003 and 2025. These studies were coded for sampling features, learner demographics, research methods, research foci, and operationalization features of flow. The findings revealed that research on flow has rapidly grown, especially since 2016, with studies skewed towards samples involving Asian English as a foreign language (EFL)...

This study aims to enhance second language (L2) learners’ motivation and facilitate successful L2 learning by using motivational languaging, an intervention that encourages learners to reflect on, and externalize, their L2-speaking, competent future self-concepts by writing or speaking about them. Two types of effective languaging activities were developed: individual and group writing. Participants were 264 Grade 10 high school students, divided into three groups: one control group and two experimental groups. Using activity workbooks, the first experimental group engaged in ‘individual writing’ guided by a series of questions in their workbooks (e.g. reasons for learning English and their ideal images of using English). The second experimental group carried out ‘group writing’, including group discussions and writing of group...

Resumen:
The recent introduction of positive psychology (PP) to second language acquisition (SLA) has led to increased interest in researching the relationship between language learning and various positive emotions. Despite this, the concept of learner altruistic teaching has been relatively understudied, compared to other PP aspects. In particular, studies on learner altruistic teaching and English reading comprehension skill have been notably absent. To address this gap, this intervention study aimed to investigate whether learners’ altruistic teaching had a significant effect on their English reading comprehension skill. The study used a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design with a comparison group pretest–posttest experimental design. It involved 116 Iranian learners of English as a foreign language (EFL). The study included three...

Resumen:
Classroom relationships represent a complex and dynamic system, in which students’ relationships with teachers and peers are intertwined with each other. A person-centered approach was used to investigate how multiple characteristics of a good-quality relationship (i.e., validation, caring, and instrumental guidance) with teachers and peers combined to form English-as-a-foreign-language primary school students’ classroom relationships profiles. Four distinct profiles of classroom relationships were identified: Supportive, Teacher-oriented, Moderate, and Isolated. Whether students’ gender and English proficiency level significntly predicted their likelihood of belonging to each profile was tested...

Drama serves as an innovative teaching method, particularly within education. It offers a mode of learning that both challenges and supports students in understanding their world, allowing them to express and convey ideas through an artistic medium. Drama is crucial in the teaching of languages and also helps to develop learners’ intercultural communication skills, stimulates learners’ sense of cooperation, and provides a simulated real social environment, authentic communication tasks, and a holistic learning method. Therefore, the present article aims to examine how drama contributes to the teaching of the Chinese language. The reason behind conducting the current study is to explore the specific benefits of drama in language teaching, particularly within the unique Chinese context. Data was gathered using a questionnaire survey...
