The impact of graded readers on Kazakh language acquisition: Quasi-experimental evidence
Kamshat Toleubayeva, Almagul Igenova, Yerbol Sarmurzin (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: comprensión lectora

Resumen:

This study explores the effectiveness of modified Kazakh literary texts in teaching Kazakhs as foreign languages. Using a quasi-experimental design, 36 university students were divided into two groups: teacher-modified texts were provided to the experimental group and the control group used the original versions. The experimental group showed markedly greater improvements in reading speed and test results. A quarter of the experimental group participants reported experiencing greater motivation toward reading and forming daily reading habits, which was not observed in the control group. The graded readers were rated as having suitable difficulty by 33.3% of the experimental group, whereas 38.9% of the control group found the original text too difficult. The results indicate that there is a need for a uniform process to create graded...

The impact of future L2 selves and positive emotions on self-regulated writing strategies: A mixed method approach
Yabing Wang, Jian Xu, Huiyin Li (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación

Resumen:

While extensive research supported the facilitative role of motivation in general self-regulated learning (SRL) strategy use, its connection to writing-specific SRL strategy use remains underexplored. Furthermore, the exploration of the interplay between motivation and SRL strategy use in second or foreign (L2) writing was absent within the motivational-self system. Even less is known about the mechanism between motivational factors and SRL strategy use in L2 writing. This study aims to fill the gap by testing the mediating role of positive emotions (enjoyment, pride, and hope) between future L2 writing selves (ideal L2 self and ought-to L2 self) and SRL strategy use in the Chinese English as a foreign language (EFL) writing context with a mixed method design incorporating both quantitative and qualitative methods. Three hundred and...

Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de vocabulario

Resumen:

This study introduces ‘seamless Chinese vocabulary learning’ (SCVL), a mobile-assisted initiative designed to bridge learners’ everyday experiences with formal language instruction. The SCVL framework integrates mobile technologies to foster vocabulary acquisition through artefact creation in a seamless learning environment. Employing a design-based research (DBR) methodology with mixed-methods design, 32 participants of varying proficiency levels took part in a 16-week intervention facilitated via the DingTalk platform. Quantitative analysis of 2,397 artefacts using the type–token ratio (TTR) indicated significant improvements in lexical variety across sentences, paragraphs, and essays across performance groups. Two-way ANOVA and post-hoc tests revealed significant main effects of time and group. A notable Group × Time interaction...

A longitudinal study of foreign language anxiety and enjoyment
Chunmei Pan, Xian Zhang (2023)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: factores afectivos

Resumen:

The present longitudinal study investigated the changes of FLE (foreign language enjoyment) and FLA (foreign language anxiety) over time in the foreign language classroom and their relationship with foreign language learning motivation and learners’ personality traits. Fifty-five college students completed an FLE/FLA questionnaire after English classes over 14 weeks. They also completed a motivation questionnaire and a personality questionnaire. The results revealed that FLE was less stable over time as compared to FLA. A number of motivational factors (e.g. ought-to L2 self, ideal L2 self, motivated behavior) were found to be related to both the mean and the variance of FLE and FLA over time. Moreover, several personality traits (e.g. extraversion) also played a role in FLE and FLA. Pedagogical implications were discussed.

Classroom environment and engagement in the EFL writing context: The mediating role of goal orientations
Shuneng Zhong, Shuangjuan Zhan (2024)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: expresión escrita

Resumen:

Although second language (L2) engagement has received increasing attention, L2 writing engagement has been rarely investigated. Based on the social-cognitive theory, environmental sources could influence individuals’ motivations which in turn affect their engagement. However, factors contributing to L2 writing engagement have not been thoroughly understood. The present study investigated the associations between three dimensions of classroom environment (teacher support, student cohesion, and task orientation) and L2 writing engagement as well as the mediation roles of mastery and performance approach goals among 721 Chinese learners of English as a foreign language (EFL). Structural equation model analysis suggested that task orientation was the most influential environmental factor; it could not only directly influence EFL writing...

Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: motivación

Resumen:

This study investigates the impact of an extensive reading program on the English learning motivation of young middle-school learners of English as a foreign language, utilizing the self-determination theory framework. Eighty-one Grade 7 students participated in a semester-long extensive reading program designed to provide supportive conditions by allowing students to select reading materials that matched their proficiency levels and personal interests. Employing a mixed-methods approach, quantitative data were collected through pre- and post-motivation questionnaires measuring intrinsic motivation, external regulation, introjected regulation, and identified regulation, whereas qualitative data were obtained from student interviews and teacher focus groups. This study identified a multi-factor structure of motivation. It also revealed...

Examining the role of the learner and the teacher in language learning motivation
Mairin Hennebry-Leung, Hu Amy Xiao (2023)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

Effective teaching practice requires that teachers know their students not as ‘faceless average learners’, but as individuals. The most individual of learner characteristics is personality, and yet language education research has made little progress in understanding the role of personality. As the field of language learning motivation seeks to develop frameworks for motivational teaching practice, a richer understanding of learners’ individuality is crucial in shaping practices that respond to learners’ needs. The present study examines the role of learners’ personality and teachers’ practice in shaping motivation and self-efficacy in language learning. Drawing on data gathered from 277 learners of English in Hong Kong, aged 11–14 years, and 24 lesson observations, across 10 classes, the study applies hierarchical multiple regression...

Development and validation of the English as a foreign language reading engagement questionnaire
Jiarui Li, Wenhua Ma, Zhengdong Gan (2026)
Language Teaching Research
Detalles Cerrar βœ•

Tipo: artículo

Metodología: estudio empírico

Temas: enseñanza/aprendizaje de lenguas

Resumen:

While the multidimensional nature of reading engagement has been widely acknowledged in the English as a first language context, the constructs of reading engagement have remained inadequately investigated empirically in the English as a foreign language context, and research on the predictive effects of these constructs on learning achievement is limited in the area of learning English as a foreign language. The first purpose of this study was therefore to develop the English as a Foreign Language Reading Engagement Questionnaire (EFL-REQ) and validate its psychometric properties among college EFL learners. The second purpose was to assess the predictive effects of the EFL-REQ dimensions on English learning achievement. A series of psychometric tests was conducted with a large sample of college EFL learners in China (n = 1, 341) who...
